Detroit Red Wings re-sign 2019 second-round pick Antti Tuomisto to two-way deal
In 2019, the Detroit Red Wings saw enough potential in Antti Tuomisto to use their second pick in the draft on him. Six years later, he has yet to even sniff the NHL, but he's done well in the minors and earned an extension with the franchise. The Wings have signed the 24-year-old defenseman for one year, days before he could have become a restricted free agent on July 1. The 2019 draft was Steve Yzerman's first as general manager of the Wings. His first selection, Moritz Seider (No. 6) already is four years into his career and a key part of the rebuild. Albert Johansson, a second-round pick (No. 60), just completed his first NHL season, thriving after the coaching change at Christmas. That draft also saw the Wings select Elmer Söderblom in the sixth round (159th overall); the gangly forward likewise made inroads to establishing his NHL career this past season. Advertisement Tuomisto, selected with the team's first pick in the second round at No. 35 overall, spent two seasons playing at the University of Denver, before going back to his native Finland to play in that country's top league in 2022-23. He split his time between the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) and Toledo Walleye (ECHL) the following season, and in 2024-25, posted 27 points in 67 games with the Griffins. Defenseman Albert Johansson agreed to terms on a two-year contract with an annual average value of $1.13 million. Johansson, 24, had a good showing in the second half of 2024-25, establishing himself as a regular in the lineup. Detroit Red Wings trade underachieving forward Vladimir Tarasenko to Minnesota Wild
Steve Yzerman got rid of the Detroit Red Wings' biggest underachiever last season, clearing cap space and a roster spot. The Red Wings agreed to a trade on Monday, June 30 to send Vladimir Tarasenko to the Minnesota Wild. Advertisement That the trade yielded only future considerations in return – hockey code speak for nothing – isn't as important as the fact the Wings don't retain any of Tarasenko's $4.75 million cap hit, which is what was left on the two-year deal the Wings signed him to on July 3, 2024. Tarasenko, 33, never came close to contributing as expected for the Wings, finishing with just 11 goals and 33 points in 80 games. Detroit Red Wings call up goaltender Sebastian Cossa under emergency conditions
DENVER — A day after losing Petr Mrazek to injury, the Detroit Red Wings called up goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa. The team listed the call-up as under emergency conditions, though both Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot are also on the team. A team can only designate a call-up as an emergency if it does not have the required personnel available at a certain spot, such as the two goaltenders needed to dress for a game. The Wings did not hold a morning skate Tuesday at Ball Arena, ahead of their evening game against the Colorado Avalanche. Lyon was in net for Monday's 5-1 victory at Utah Hockey Club, taking over after Mrazek suffered an undisclosed injury 1:36 into the game. Immediately following that game, coach Todd McLellan indicated Talbot would start against the Avalanche. The No. 15 selection from the 2021 draft won his NHL debut on Dec. 9 against the Buffalo Sabres, including turning away two of three shootout attempts. Cossa, 22, has posted a 19-11-5 record with a 2.38 goals-against average, a 0.913 save percentage and one shutout in 35 appearances with the Griffins during the 2024-25 season. Cossa spent the entire 2023-24 campaign with the Griffins, logging a 22-9-9 record with a 2.41 goals-against average, a 0.913 save percentage and two shutouts in 40 regular-season appearances.
