Danny Boyle explains Cillian Murphy's role after 28 Years Later
28 Years Later has been a huge success since its cinema release last week, with scores of up to 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. *Warning, there are spoilers in this article if you haven't seen 28 Years Later* It pretty much ticked every box with fans of the films, however, some where left wondering about Cillian Murphy's character Jim. Advertisement Murphy starred in Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later, which was released in 2002. Trailers left fans speculating that he had become a zombie, or 'infected' as they are known in the franchise, when a monster that looked eerily like Murphy featured in the trailer for 28 Years Later. However, it wasn't to be, but the Oppenheimer star did feature as an executive producer for the film. Director Danny Boyle has since confirmed Murphy will appear in the sequel to 28 Years Later, '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple'. Advertisement In an interview with ScreenRant, Boyle said Murphy will feature "at the coda" of the film. While this suggests a cameo, Boyle hinted that Murphy's Jim will be the main character in the third film to finish the trilogy. Cillian Murphy in 28 Days Later. "Yeah, I have admitted this under pressure. I've obviously seen a rough cut of Nia DaCosta's film of The Bone Temple and he's introduced beautifully at the coda of that film. That obviously leads you in the way that you'll probably realize that Jimmy is going to be a huge part of the second movie having been introduced at the end of the first movie. Likewise, Cillian will be a huge part of the third movie having been introduced in what is, in effect, a coda to the second movie. A very surprising one nonetheless." The Bone Temple was shot back-to-back with 28 Years Later, and will be released in cinemas in January 2026. Advertisement Boyle was referring to Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell) who makes a violent entrance at the close of 28 Years Later and will feature prominently in the next film. It is also evident that he was the boy who escaped a massacre by infected at the beginning of the film. His resemblance to sexual abuser Jimmy Savile has led to some controversy, but it fits in with the theme of an isolated Britain stuck in the past that is prominent throughout the film. Alfie Williams reflects on 28 Years Later debut and mentorship from Danny Boyle, Aaron Taylor-Johnson
British teen actor Alfie Williams is stepping into the spotlight with 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle's post-apocalyptic sequel to the cult classic 28 Days Later. Though only 14, Williams finds himself at the center of a massive genre film, playing Spike—a boy forced to grow up fast in a world still haunted by a deadly rage virus. Williams, who hails from near Newcastle, is featured prominently in promotional materials, including atop a towering 'bone temple' built for the film. The visual spectacle mirrors the intensity of his character's arc. 'Spike's a young boy living with his parents on Holy Island. On his 12th birthday, his dad starts training him to survive the mainland,' Williams explains. That coming-of-age survival tale drives the film's emotional core. Director Danny Boyle calls Williams 'hugely talented,' praising the young actor's growth on set. 'He benefitted from what was almost a guardianship from Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and later learned stillness and presence from Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes,' Boyle told Variety. Though unfamiliar with Boyle's work at first, Williams caught up quickly, diving into 28 Days Later and Trainspotting. His commitment landed him the lead role after four audition recalls. He kept his natural accent and underwent archery training to embody Spike's transformation. Filming was immersive, with minimal green screen. 'Everything was built—the bone temple was real. I had to climb it, fully harnessed,' Williams recalls. He also describes hiding from explosions and confronting eerily realistic infected on set. Beyond the screen, Williams finds joy in comedy films and draws inspiration from his actor father, Alfie Dobson. With a second installment, The Bone Temple, due in January, Williams' journey is just beginning. Like 28 Days Later did for Cillian Murphy, 28 Years Later could mark the start of a major career.

Danny Boyle Explains What To Expect Of The Bone Temple, Sequel To 28 Years Later
Last Updated: 28 Years Later makers have already finished filming the sequel, The Bone Temple and it is expected to come out in 2026. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, who gave us 28 Days Later over 20 years ago, are back with its sequel, 28 Years Later. The new zombie film is already getting positive reviews online and it's just the start of a fresh trilogy that promises even more excitement. The next part, called The Bone Temple, is ready and waiting to surprise audiences. The good news is that filming for this sequel is already done and is expected to come out in January 2026. So far, not much has been shared about the story of the next film. But a few cast members have already been confirmed for The Bone Temple. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell and Emma Laird will be part of the movie. One big surprise is that Cillian Murphy will return as Jim, the same character he played in 28 Days Later. In an earlier interview with Screen Rant, Danny Boyle shared that the 28 Years Later trilogy might not follow a single continuous storyline. Instead, each film will tell its own separate tale within the same world. The filmmaker said, 'It's spread over three films, ultimately, and each film would stand independently. But there'd be a bigger tale to tell, and it would be based on a family, and these two [points to Aaron and Jodie] would be the origin of the family. So, it's independent from the first film, but it's still the same apocalypse 28 years later as it was for Cillian Murphy in the first film and Naomie Harris. But this is 28 years later, and we don't know what's happened to them [Jim and Selena]. I'm not allowed to tell you, but these two are more than worthy stand-ins." As per the official synopsis of 28 Years Later, 'It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well." The movie stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams and Ralph Fiennes.
