Iconic Dr Seuss Story 'The Cat In The Hat' Sets Date for Official Trailer originally appeared on Parade. The animated film based on Dr. Seuss's iconic children's book The Cat In The Hat has been in the works for years, and now, the trailer for the film will be dropping soon. On Monday, Warner Bros. released a surprise video on X featuring Bill Hader, who stars as the mischievous feline in the upcoming movie, announcing that the film's first trailer will be released tomorrow. Hader also announced the rest of the star-studded cast in the clip, building hype for the reimagining of the beloved Dr. Seuss classic. Hader not only revealed the trailer release date, but he also announced that Tiago Martinez, Tituss Burgess and Giancarlo Esposito were joining the voice cast. It was confirmed back in March 2024 that the voice cast also included Quinta Brunson, Bowen Yang, Xochitl Gomez, Matt Berry and Paula Pell. After the success of the film The Lorax in 2012, Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment announced plans to produce a CGI adaptation of The Cat in the Hat, but the project never came to fruition. Then, in January 2018, Warner Animation Group and Dr. Seuss Enterprises struck a deal to make new animated movies based on the stories of Theodor Seuss Geisel. A first look at the film was presented by Hader and Bill Damaschke, the president of Warner Bros, at CinemaCon this past April. They featured details such as the Cat's field of work and his previous failed assignments, his co-workers who are similar in fashion and the introduction of additional Thing characters besides Thing One and Thing Two. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Cat in the Hat was written and directed by Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja, with Daniela Mazzucato and Jared Stern marked as producers. In addition, Susan Brandt, president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Hader are credited as executive producers. DNEG Animation will be the animation studio partner. The film is based on Dr Seuss' book with the same name, which was originally published in 1957 and has since become a classic children's book. The book tells the story of a tall anthropomorphic cat who wears a red and white-striped top hat and a red bow tie, who shows up at the house of Sally and her brother one rainy day when their mother is away. Despite the objections from the children's fish, the Cat attempts to entertain the children. In the process, he and his companions, Thing One and Thing Two, destroy the house. As the children and the fish become more alarmed, the Cat produces a machine that he uses to clean everything up and disappears just before the children's mother comes home. This will mark the character's animated big-screen debut. There is already a live-action version of the story, which was released in 2003 and starred Mike Myers as the Cat. The trailer is set to release on Tuesday, July 1 and the film will be out in theaters on February 27, 2026. I Think Bill Hader's Cat In The Hat Reboot Has Officially Won Me Over, And I'm As Shocked As You Are

While I'm a staunch defender of Jim Carrey's 2000 remake of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, I'm still nervous about returning to its spiritual successor - Mike Myers' The Cat in the Hat. I know we're currently running through the 2025 movie schedule, but learning about another crack at the bat with Dr. Seuss' classic book was enough to make me worry. At least, that was until today - the day that the new Bill Hader-starring reboot dropped its first trailer. Now that I've watched it myself, out of what started as morbid curiosity, I'm surprised to say I'm now very hopeful about what could be on the horizon. Better still, I think even jaded adults will be getting some serious laughs out of this. Bathed in the sort of color and imaginative vision you'd expect from a Seussian masterpiece, this new 2026 take looks absolutely pure of heart. That's something that was definitely missing from the 2003 live-action adventure. While some of my favorite moments that suggest maybe The Cat in the Hat is "good, actually," they weren't indicative of The Cat I grew up with. Directors/co-writers Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja appear to have assembled a vision that's awash in that sunlight and innocence. Both are animation veterans who've worked on franchises, thanks to Carloni's credits through How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3, and Rivinoja's work on South Park and Trolls. Visually, that melting pot tracks; though when it comes to the humor, that subject is also a very promising prospect to discuss. I think the scene that best won me over to The Cat in the Hat's side is the one where The Cat is about to do what he does best: ignore the rules. Pulling from the well of pure Looney Tunes insanity, we get a beautifully brief moment that mixes the innocence mentioned above with pure lunacy. It's an old gag, but it's playful and it works. That same mindset is also rewarded when you realize that The Cat works at The Institute for the Institution of Imagination and Inspiration, LLC. Once again, we've got a modern skewing joke mixed with classic absurdity. Which leads to a rather interesting confrontation via a co-worker voiced by SNL star Bowen Yang. Playing a more serious green character, Yang warns this feline funster not to open a box that literally says 'Do Not Open.' Cue a short gag, where several other warning signs are ignored, and we're left to gleefully wonder what's going to leap out. While I can't make any educated guesses, I'll let a moment from one of the best Bill Hader TV appearences guess for me! Perhaps whatever, or whomever, is in the box will reveal the true nature of The Cat in the Hat's Matt Berry performance. If that's the case, then this scene just might be my favorite from this upcoming picture. Of course it's way too early to tell, but the point is that this teaser has actually gotten me invested in seeing how Bill Hader and company reinvent the mascot of Dr. Seuss' legacy. With that, I must remind you all that The Cat in the Hat will once again leap from our imaginations and onto the big screen, on February 27th, 2026. So let's not get too hyped up, as there's bound to be plenty more tricks in that titular hat. Although you can check out what other 2026 movies we should be paying attention to. Maybe there's more of this sort of magic awaiting in the next year, and we wouldn't want to miss out, would we?

Some viewers even think the animation looks artificial, comparing it to AI-generated content. 'ChatGPT, make a CGI Cat in the Hat movie,' one person joked on X. Others were more blunt about their dislike of the animation style. 'My eyes. They bleed,' a user wrote after posting a screenshot from the trailer. Beyond the visuals, the trailer's cheerful tone has stirred debate. For many fans of the 2003 live-action film starring Mike Meyers, The Cat in the Hat isn't supposed to be sweet; it's meant to give kids nightmares, duh. 'If you're not forcing Mike Myers into it via lawsuit and then making a bizarre all-time terrible film, then what's even the point?' a Redditor joked. Another person on X agreed with this sentiment, writing: 'I don't want an animated cat in the hat, I WANT THAT REAL LIFE 6ft B***H.' While it seems like there are a lot of opinions being thrown around, it's important to remember that regardless of animation style or its level of nightmare fuel, it's important to support cat representation in cinema—unless, of course, it's 2019's musical monstrosity, Cats, and then all bets are off.
