Wolf Alice Unveil New Single 'The Sofa'

Beloved British band Wolf Alice share new single, 'The Sofa' - another dimension to their highly anticipated fourth studio album The Clearing confirmed for release on August 22nd via Mushroom Music. Following a triumphant return to the stage with headlining festival performances at Primavera and a history-defining Glastonbury set on home soil, this new era announces Wolf Alice as a band who are in a league entirely of their own. 'The Sofa' is the album's psychological portrait which is a microcosm of the wider themes it reckons with: falling in love with your life for exactly what it is and finally letting go of unrealised dreams without shame, guilt or disappointment as you grow older. Unspooling like a daydream on an idle afternoon, 'The Sofa' is a piano ballad fortified by the best songwriting of Ellie Rowsell's career - radical in its unflinching honesty. 'Didn't make it out to California / Where I thought I might clean the slate / Feels a little like I'm stuck in Seven Sisters / North London, oh England / And maybe that's ok,' Rowsell sings. In abandoning the self-consciousness which weighs down your twenties, Wolf Alice reach a point of hard-won serenity. Advertisement - scroll to continue reading 'It's about not trying so hard to figure everything out, reflecting on getting older and trying not to agonise over things that have or haven't happened in your life. It's also about trying to get to grips with the polarising aspects of one's life when you're in a band. You've just played a huge tour - and you come home, and you have your dinner on the sofa. For me, it's summed up in how I treat TV. I used to never watch the same thing twice because I thought I've got so much to discover! And now I'm like, It's okay if I just want to rewatch Peep Show for the thirteenth time.' – Ellie Rowsell Shot on the streets of the band's native North London in homage to the lyrics, the video for 'The Sofa' captures the day-dreamy spirit of the song in boldly-coloured slow motion. Ellie is transported on a surreal fantasy through the euphoric messiness of British summertime street life while never leaving the comfort of her sofa. Inspired by classic street photography, these vignettes capture the blissed-out interactions of people from all walks of life, celebrating the shared joy we feel with strangers on a sunny day. The video was directed by Fiona Jane Burgess (Christina Aguilera, girlinred, Gucci) and features numerous easter eggs for the band's upcoming album. The single release follows Wolf Alice's victorious return to Glastonbury Festival this past month, performing a razor-sharp set of hits to a sunset crowd on the Other Stage on Sunday afternoon. Combining fan favourites such as 'Bros' and 'Don't Delete The Kisses' with jubilant new singles 'Bloom Baby Bloom' and 'The Sofa' - the slot felt like a victory lap for a band truly at the peak of their powers. Written in Seven Sisters and recorded in LA with Grammy-winning, master producer Greg Kurstin last year, The Clearing reveals where Wolf Alice stand sonically in 2025, delivering a supremely confident collection of songs bursting with ambition, ideas and emotion; The Clearing is a truly timeless record.

ABC announces true crime drama focused on Erin Patterson's mushroom case as nation awaits verdict in murder trial

The ABC has announced it will air a television series about Erin Patterson, who is currently facing murder charges. The project, named Toxic, is helmed by screenwriter Elise McCredie and producer Tony Ayres, whose previous works include Stateless, Clickbait, and The Clearing. According to Tony Ayres Productions, the team is collaborating closely with ABC journalist Rachael Brown to ensure accuracy and depth in portraying the events surrounding the case. The creators said the series will tell the story through multiple timelines and perspectives, avoiding judgement and focusing on complexity. Ayres, the Managing Director and Executive Producer at Tony Ayres Productions, said making the drama was about pushing beyond the headlines and working out what was happening beneath the surface. "True stories ask storytellers to probe the complexities of human behaviour. What really lies beneath the headlines? It's both a challenge and a responsibility to go beyond the surface - to reveal, not just sensationalise," he said. Head of ABC Scripted Rachel Okine said she is "excited to be partnering" with Tony Ayres Productions on the "powerful new project". "This investigation has already captivated audiences across Australia and we're eager to dive deeper into the complexities behind the headlines to bring this story to life with the team," she said. The drama comes amid international attention on the case and Ms Patterson, who is accused of murdering three relatives of her estranged husband by serving them a poisonous beef wellington lunch on July 29, 2023. The ABC says 'There's currently no indication of casting or when the series will begin filming.' Ms Patterson has been charged with the murders of her former in-laws Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson. The 50-year-old has also been charged with the attempted murder of Heather's husband and local church pastor Ian Wilkinson, who survived the meal after a lengthy stint in hospital. Prosecutors allege Ms Patterson's beef wellington lunch, which was held at her house in Leongatha, was intentionally laced with death cap mushrooms. It is alleged Ms Patterson concocted a cancer diagnosis to lure her guests over for lunch as she needed advice on how to break the medical news to her children. Ms Patterson has pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. The jury retired on Monday, and at time of publication, a verdict had not been returned.

BBC drama Mix Tape will have Netflix One Day fans hooked

New BBC drama Mix Tape is a perfect substitute for fans of Netflix's One Day - with a fate-driven love story as two lives take very different paths Romance lovers get ready as the BBC has just announced a brand new drama that promises to tug at the heartstrings of viewers. Titled Mix Tape, the four-part series sounds like the ideal watch for fans of hit Netflix show One Day, offering a similar emotional journey through love, time and second chances. The series has been adapted from Jane Sanderson's acclaimed novel of the same name, and the show is set to premiere on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer later this summer. With a story that spans decades and continents, it's already gaining widespread attraction, having picked up the TV Spotlight Audience Award at SXSW 2025. So, what can viewers expect from this highly anticipated series? What is Mix Tape about? The official synopsis reads: "The four-part series follows Daniel and Alison, moving between their teenage romance in 1989 Sheffield and the modern-day reality of their adult relationships living on opposite sides of the world." Much like the beloved characters Emma and Dex from One Day, Mix Tape explores a deep and emotional connection between two people who find their lives taking very different paths. But fate has other plans. The main characters Daniel and Alison are separated as they build completely different lives on opposite sides of the world with new partners. "The pair reconnect through a song from their shared past and explore their burning curiosity to understand if this is the love, and the life, they were meant to have," the synopsis continues. The series stars Teresa Palmer, known for her roles in The Clearing and The Fall Guy, as Alison and Jim Sturgess, known for his roles in Across The Universe and Cloud Atlas, as Daniel. Their younger selves are played by Bridgerton's Florence Hunt and new-comer Rory Walton-Smith - who will be playing his first mainstream role. The show was filmed in locations in Dublin, Ireland and Sydney, Australia, and the series promises a romance "packed with emotion" set against a fantastic soundtrack which will transport you back to the 80s. "Mix Tape will take viewers back in time to that intoxicating feeling of first love [and be] a classic all-encompassing romance set to a banging nostalgic soundtrack," producers told Variety. Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, said: "Accompanied by an absolutely cracking 80s soundtrack, Mix Tape is an enjoyable blend of nostalgia, romance and heartbreak – it really is the perfect summer treat!" Patrick Roberts, Senior Vice President of global sales at Boat Rocker Studios, added: "We're delighted by the strong response to Mix Tape we've received from the BBC and our other partners around the world and can't wait for audiences to discover this unique take on a modern love story." Mix Tape will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two later this summer.

Wolf Alice, photo by Rachel Fleminger Hudson Wolf Alice have announced a new album, The Clearing, set for release on August 29 via RCA. Leading the British rock quartet's follow-up to 2021's Blue Weekend is the new song 'Bloom Baby Bloom.' Watch the single's music video below. Wolf Alice wrote their new album in the Seven Sisters neighborhood of north London. They recorded it in Los Angeles with producer Greg Kurstin. Discussing the new single, in a press statement, Wolf Alice's lead singer, Ellie Rowsell, said, 'I wanted a rock song, to focus on the performance element of a rock song and sing like Axl Rose, but to be singing a song about being a woman.' She continued, 'I've used the guitar as a shield in the past, playing it has perhaps been some way to reject the 'girl singer in band' trope, but I wanted to focus on my voice as a rock instrument so it's been freeing to put the guitar down and reach a point where I don't feel like I need to prove that I'm a musician.' $38.00, Rough Trade Originally Appeared on Pitchfork
