That may come as a shock to some because of how The Conners came to be. In an era of reboots, ABC brought back the beloved Roseanne for a 10th season in 2018. Unfortunately, the show was canceled just as fast as it was brought back because of Barr's offensive online behavior. The spinoff cast nearly everyone else from her TV family and continued the story without her, putting Sara Gilbert in charge as an executive producer. So when The Conners came calling on Barr to pick up a guest-starring role as a ghost of her dead character, it did not go over well. In her new documentary, Barr explained, "They called me and asked me if I would like to come back as a guest star. You're coming back as a ghost." Barr reacted as one would expect, with anger. She recalled, "You're asking me to come back to the show that you f--king stole from me and killed my ass, and now you want me to show up because you got shit f--king ratings and play a ghost?" Barr's fans have been thrilled to see her back and are eating up this new documentary, Roseanne Barr is America. Unsurprisingly, many don't have great things to say about The Conners and are siding squarely with Barr over her decision not to return. "I love Rosanne. I was going to watch the reboot, but not after what they did to her. It's her show. I can't stand Sara Gilbert. She is another confused kid growing up in Hollywierd," one fan wrote. Another declared, "You are an absolute legend Roseanne!" "What they did to Rosanne was wrong!!!" another wrote. Even on X, Barr's fans couldn't believe The Conners tried to bring her back after she was fired. "Roseanne as a ghost? Insult or irony—Hollywood never disappoints," said one X user. On Facebook, a Barr fan said," I would turned that down too. The nerve." One dissenter argued that Rosanne as a ghost on The Conners would be "Top tier." Legendary Sitcom Actress, 72, Reveals Alleged Actor Who Tipped off Tabloid About Daughter She Put up for Adoption originally appeared on Parade. Love her or hate her, Roseanne Barr, 72, forever change television history with the sitcom after her own namesake. The sitcom that originally aired on ABC lasted for nine seasons by the time it was ended in 1997 and was brought back for a 10th season reboot in 2017. In 2018, the show was abruptly cancelled after the actress shared a racist tweet but was revived as The Conners later that year. Since then Barr has appeared on several podcasts to give her unfiltered opinion on whatever subject is at hand. Most recently she appeared on Bunnie Xo's podcast Dumb Blonde, and talked about the story of giving up her first daughter for adoption when she was recounted that she intended for her daughter to find her one day, intentionally keeping her name as she rose to fame and knew what family she was placed in. She said that while her daughter didn't know Barr was her mother, she did know her birth mom was famous and in Hollywood (and for the longest time suspected it was Goldie Hawn, 79). She then said she got a call from National Enquirer, telling her they were going to run the story of the daughter she gave up for adoption. When she asked how they found this out, the reporter allegedly kept it under wraps on who their source was, but she claimed to eventually figure out who told them. "Who found her was the National Enquirer, because my boyfriend at the time, I found out way later, he went to the Enquirer and told him that I had a baby that I gave up." When Bunnie asked if it was the father of the baby, Barr answered without hesitation: "No, Tom Arnold. Yeah, he's making a living off telling stories about me, which I didn't know at the time." Barr went on to talk about how that tabloid incident ended up reuniting the two, and they now have a healthy relationship. However fans were not letting the alleged Tom Arnold, 66, revelation slip. "Tom Arnold was the biggest mistake she ever made," claimed one fan. "Dropping a dime on Tom Arnold is hilarious," added another. Barr and Arnold first met when she saw his act in 1983. The two's relationship was officially cemented in 1990 with their marriage, but divorce followed just four years later. Since then the two have publicly swiped at one another. Ultimately though, Barr is grateful for the tabloid reuniting her with her daughter. After getting the call from the tabloid at 17 years old, a year before Barr had intended to find her, she flew out out to meet her along with her adoptive mother. "...we met and it was wonderful," she explained to Bunnie. "So we've been back together since then, and she is now 53. She is awesome. Roseanne Barr reveals ABC's humiliating final insult after ending her career
's new documentary Roseanne Is America debuted on Tuesday, where she revealed how ABC asked her back on The Conners after she was killed off. ABC revived the 72-year-old comedienne's iconic 1980s/1990s sitcom Roseanne back in 2018, bringing back the original cast of characters in the fictional Lanford, IL. The original show ran nine seasons from 1988 to 1997, and is widely considered one of the greatest sitcoms of all time. ABC brought the show back for a 10th season in 2018, and while it was renewed for an 11th, the network quickly reversed their decision after Barr tweeted that former Barack Obama administration official Valerie Jarrett was an 'ape.' After ABC called the tweet, 'abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values,' they ultimately cancelled Roseanne and brought forth a new show, The Conners, which revealed in the series premiere that Roseanne's character had died from a drug overdose. Now Barr is revealing in her Roseanne Is America documentary - available on DVD and digital formats - that ABC actually wanted to bring her back as a 'ghost' guest star at some point during The Conners' run. 'They called me and asked me if I would like to come back as a guest star. You're coming back as a ghost,' Barr revealed. The comedienne added, 'You're asking me to come back to the show that you f***ing stole from me and killed my a**, and now you want me to show up because you got s**t f***ing ratings and play a ghost?' She added in the film that she turned down the request by telling the network, 'I'm gonna be bowling that f***ing week.' Barr also commented on how her character was killed off in the show mirrors the real-life death of Glenn Quinn, who played Becky's (Alicia Goranson) husband Mark Healy on the original show, and died from an accidental overdose in 2002. 'Within three weeks, they revived the show as The Conners, and of course they killed off my character Roseanne in an opioid overdose,' Barr said in the documentary. 'Which was staggering because Glenn Quinn, who played Becky's husband, actually died of an opioid overdose,' she added. The show would go on to reveal that her overdose came as she was struggling with addiction that was exacerbated by knee pain and insufficient medical coverage. The Conners ran for seven seasons on ABC, coming to a close in late April with the finale, which surprised many fans since it didn't include any footage of Roseanne at all, despite multiple clips from the original show with other characters. Executive producer Dave Caplan explained to Deadline, 'It was contractual,' regarding Roseanne's absence in the finale. He added of her exit from the show, 'When she realized it would be putting 300 people out of work when the initial reboot was canceled, she gracefully allowed us to continue without her.' 'It really was about these people. This show was really about the lives of these other people in the family, the Conners, and we wanted to focus on them,' he added. Years after being fired from her spinoff show, Roseanne Barr claims that she was once asked to return to the sitcom as a "ghost." In her documentary, "Roseanne Barr is America," the comedian, 72, opened up about the downfall that stemmed from her controversial 2018 tweets and explained why she turned down ABC's alleged offer to return to "The Conners" after being fired. "They called me and asked me if I would like to come back as a guest star. You're coming back as a ghost," Barr said in the documentary. "You're asking me to come back to the show that you f---ing stole from me and killed my a--, and now you want me to show up because you got s--- f---ing ratings and play a ghost?" Barr said she immediately turned down the offer. "I'm gonna be bowling that f---ing week," she recalled saying. Representatives for ABC and Barr did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment. People has reported that Barr's claims about the offer are false. After playing Dan and Roseanne Conner on "Roseanne" from 1988 to 1998, John Goodman and Barr agreed to do a reboot of the show with the same name. The nine-episode first season aired from March through May 2018, but that summer, Barr made a series of questionable comments about Valerie Jarrett, a former advisor to President Obama, and she was fired from the show. Barr disputed the claims and apologized for making a "bad joke." Because the reboot was successful, the network made the decision to change the title from "Roseanne" to "The Conners," and Barr's disappearance was explained by an off-screen death. After the tweet scandal, Barr sat down with Fox News' Sean Hannity. "I feel like I have apologized and explained and asked for forgiveness and made recompense, that's part of my religion," she said at the time. "I was so sad, and I'm so sad that anyone thinks that of me," she added. "I never meant to hurt anybody or say anything negative about an entire race of people." During a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Barr said that she doesn't keep in touch with her former co-stars. "No, I'm not friends with none of them. They're all in the past. I have pleasant memories of what fun we had – wish them all the best. And no, we don't talk. I've moved on from that horrendous ending and chapter of my life, but you know, I don't hold any bitterness or nothing to them, but my God, what fun we had on that show. "And I was sorry they f---ed it all up with their greed and ridiculous stupidity to f--- all that up. F--- them, but I wish them well," she said. But a source tells TVLine that Barr's claims are 'inaccurate.' TVLine reached out to Barr's rep for further clarification on when, exactly, she received the invite. Barr declined comment. Barr was famously fired by ABC in 2018 after she hit send on a bigoted tweet that nearly took her sitcom family down with her. But the beloved series, not unlike the working-class family at its center, persevered: Three weeks after Roseanne was cancelled, Barr reached a financial settlement with Werner Entertainment that allowed the production company to move forward with a spinoff without her participation. That agreement also forbade The Conners from using her likeness — hence the offshoot never showing Roseanne Conner in pictures or in flashbacks. When the agreement was reached, Barr put out the following statement: 'I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne. I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved.' Seven years later, ahead of The Conners' series finale, TVLine spoke with executive producers Bruce Helford, Bruce Rasmussen and Dave Caplan, and asked if they considered having Barr make a cameo. At the time, Helford was quick to remind me, 'We pulled a Newhart the first time!' (He was referring to 2018's Roseanne revival, which kicked off with the resurrection of John Goodman's Dan Conner, who was killed off in the original series' 1997 finale.) To do it again, this time with Dan's late wife, 'would have felt to us like a rug pull,' Rasmussen said. According to Helford, the only conversation they ever had was about preserving the memory of Barr's character, 'and we felt we did that. People loved her, her family loved her, and we wanted to make sure that this was something that honored that.' Added Caplan: 'We never ran away from, or disrespected her character. That was a conscious decision on all our parts.' Disney/ABC also declined comment for this story, while reps for the EPs have not responded as of press time.
