Steve Allan completes the first wire-to-wire victory in Dick's Sporting Goods Open history
ENDICOTT, N.Y. (AP) — Steve Allan became the first wire-to-wire winner in Dick's Sporting Goods Open history Sunday, closing with a 6-under 66 for a four-stroke victory. Allan finished at 18-under 198 at En-Joie Golf Course for his second PGA Tour Champions victory of the season. The 51-year-old Australian opened Friday with a 63 for a two-shot edge and had a 69 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over Boo Weekley into the final round. After playing the first seven holes Sunday in 1 under with two birdies and a bogey, Allan birdied five of the next six and parred the last five. 'It was tough. It was tough, even yesterday, hanging in there, and today early on it was a bit rough with the driver," Allan said. "In the rough a lot and just managed to hang in there. Then on the back nine, made a few putts.' He also won The Galleri Classic in late March at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage, California. Jason Caron was second after a 68. Weekley (70) and Notah Begay III (67) tied for third at 13 under, and Soren Kjeldsen (64) was another stroke back with Michael Wright (67) and Jeff Sluman (68). Padraig Harrington wasn't back to try to win for a fourth straight time, skipping the event to play in the Scottish Open. He also has the British Open at Royal Portrush and the Senior British Open at Royal Porthcawl. Ernie Els, in the British Open field, shot 69 to tie for 16th at 8 under. ___

Steve Allan wins on PGA Tour Champions for a second time with a different son on the bag
Steve Allan became the Dick's Open's first wire-to-wire champion after winning by four strokes over Jason Caron. ENDICOTT, N.Y. — Steve Allan won his first Dick's Open title with a steady final round that included a run of five birdies over the final 11 holes July 13 at En-Joie Golf Club. This is Allan's second PGA Tour Champions victory, following his first title at The Galleri Classic in Southern California in March. He outlasted Jason Caron in the third round, shooting a 6-under 66 to finish the tournament at 18 under. Caron was 4 under Sunday to finish in second at 14 under, and Notah Begay III and Boo Weekley finished tied for third at 13 under. Allan put himself in prime position for the title on Day 1 with a round of 9 under, his best on the PGA Tour Champions, and he built on the advantage throughout the weekend. "It's weird, not one of those things I ever thought that I would do. Over the years I would get ahead of myself but I guess I'm improving at it. It was tough, it was tough even yesterday hanging in there, and today early on it was a bit rough with the driver, in the rough a lot and just managed to hang in there. And then on the back nine, made a few putts, which gave me a bit of breathing room," he said. He secured the win with three straight birdies starting on No. 11, seemingly putting himself out of reach on the final five holes. Allan is the first wire-to-wire champion at the Dick's Open and the third multi-tournament winner on the tour this year. He also won for a second time with one of his son's working for him as his caddie. "He's been pretty calm, he was good," Allan said. "Obviously now his older brother caddied for me earlier in the year when I won. It's crazy, I can't explain it." Caron came up just short of his first PGA Tour Champions victory, and couldn't close the gap on Allan. Boo Weekley finished tied for third a day after shaking up the leaderboard. Weekley started Saturday tied for 20th but made an incredible eight-birdie run and was two strokes behind Allan heading into the final round. Charles Schwab Cup leader Miguel Angel Jimenez finished his weekend tied for 20th. Jimenez should still hold the top spot in the rankings despite an imperfect weekend, and has won four titles this year. Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen made a run for the title, jumping 26 spots to tie for fifth after shooting 8 under in his final round. His bogey-free round put him as high as third place during the front nine, before the top grouping picked up early back-nine birdies.

Golf legend John Daly makes light of recent health scares: ‘I've only been dead 11 times'
John Daly has admittedly lived an interesting life both on and off the course. Earlier this week, ahead of The Galleri Classic, the two-time major winner reflected on his lengthy career when shown a picture of his rookie tour card from 1992. "I didn't think I'd been out here for three decades," Daly said in a video shared by the PGA Tour Champions. "I've only been dead 11 times. I'm like Lazarus. I just keep coming back from the dead. "That's when I could actually play the game." He made the comment about his health about two months after he underwent emergency surgery on his hand. He shared a post from his hospital bed in January, adding that the surgery was a success and that he would "be back playing in no time!" He returned this month in time for the Champions Tour's Hoag Classic in California. "It's been a little brutal, but the hand's about 80%," he said at the time in a video, via ESPN. Daly revealed he has undergone 16 surgeries in the last four years due to tangled tendons. In a recent podcast appearance, Daly also opened up about being diagnosed with bladder cancer. "It was scary," he said during an appearance on the "Like a Farmer Podcast." "I was peeing blood, pukin' blood. ... I thought my back was killing me, and I didn't know. And I went in Little Rock, got a checkup and everything on my back and then, was it a neurologist? Doctor saw it and said, 'You gotta come back.'" He underwent surgery and has been in remission for four years. Despite all his health setbacks, Daly had a positive message about life for his younger self when looking back at his rookie picture. "Hey, great life." Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
