Gilgo Beach Trial: What Rex Heuermann Was Overheard Telling Lawyer in Court
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Rex Heuermann told his defense attorney she did a "good job" during a hearing on DNA evidence on Tuesday. The comment came after defense attorney Danielle Coysh finished her direct questioning of Nathaniel Adams, a systems engineer at Forensic Bioinformatic Services Inc., Newsday reported. The Context Heuermann, 61, is facing murder charges for the deaths of seven women between 1993 and 2010. He was arrested in 2023 in connection with remains found over a decade prior near Gilgo Beach on Long Island, New York. The defense is challenging DNA evidence prosecutors say links Heuermann to six of the seven killings he's charged with. The judge is expected to rule on whether the evidence will be admissible at Heuermann's trial. Alleged Gilgo Beach killer Rex Heuermann appears for a hearing at Suffolk County Court in Riverhead, New York, on April 3, 2025. Alleged Gilgo Beach killer Rex Heuermann appears for a hearing at Suffolk County Court in Riverhead, New York, on April 3, 2025. James Carbone/Newsday via AP What To Know Adams said that California-based lab Astrea Forensics failed to follow some of the nationally accepted verification and validation standards. He also said the developers of the software used in Heuermann's case, IBDGem, have identified data errors and other defects in the system. The software has been updated since testing finished in Heuermann's case, Adams said. Adams said system errors would require a "risk and hazard analysis" to avoid "a miscarriage of justice," the New York Post reported. The prosecution has maintained that the DNA testing used in the case is widely accepted in the scientific community. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney challenged Adams' qualifications, claiming that his testimony has not been admissible in about 30 court cases. Heuermann's ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, and daughter, Victoria Heuermann, did not attend the hearing on Tuesday. They have previously attended several of Heuermann's court appearances. Ellerup and Victoria were recently interviewed in the new Peacock documentary series The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets. What People Are Saying Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, questioning Nathaniel Adams on Tuesday: "You've been in school for 10 years and have only obtained a bachelor's degree in all this time? You're supposed to be an expert, but you don't even know who your adviser was or if you graduated summa cum laude or not." Nathaniel Adams, discussing DNA testing in court on Tuesday: "It's unreliable. The software has been updated multiple times since the DNA in this case has been tested." What Happens Next The judge has yet to rule on the permissibility of DNA evidence. A date for Heuermann's trial has not been set yet. The defense has requested that the charges be split into five separate trials. Do you have a story that Newsweek should be covering? Do you have any questions about this story? Contact LiveNews@

Rex Heuermann's pal describes his infamous basement gun room with 279 firearms: ‘One of only four people' to see it
Creepy alleged serial murderer Rex Heuermann was obsessed with firearms and kept a serious weapons cache in a concrete basement room, which almost nobody was allowed to see. However, one of the few admitted was his friend David Jimenez, a fellow weapons enthusiast who used to go with hulking Heuermann to the firing range. 'I was in that famous 'gun room' several times. He told me, 'You're one of only four people ever to be in this room'. And I said, 'Wow, okay, I'm privileged',' said Jimenez, who appears in new Peacock documentary 'The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets.' 8 Rex Heuermann pictured at a gun range. Peacock Advertisement 'Heuermann has a fascinating collection, and knows everything about each gun. When it was used, if it was altered, he's super knowledgeable when it comes to World War I, World War II, the Korean War, anything with firearms. I was fascinated by that, because I am too. 'And its ironic, because if he did do these killings, it doesn't appear he used a firearm,' Jimenez added to The Post. After Heuermann was arrested in 2023, leading to him being charged with the murders of seven sex workers, police raided the family home and recovered 'approximately 279 weapons' in the 'cluttered' residence, including 'quite a few long guns' and 92 handgun permits. Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison told CBS New York at the time the vault had a large iron door. Authorities later said some of the weapons were there illegally without a permit. Advertisement The family petitioned to get them back in 2023 so they could sell them, although its unclear if that happened or if they are still in police custody. 8 Peacock documentary 'The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets' is availalble to stream now. Peacock Advertisement 8 David Jimenez says his former pal had a ' fascinating collection' of firearms, all of which were seized by police. Peacock Heuermann's wife, Asa Ellerup, and two grown-up children are not thought to have been allowed in the gun room. Jimenez clarified that while the number of firearms his pal owned sounds like a lot, for a serious collector it was in no way unreasonable. 'He's been collecting since he was 18 years old and kept on adding. Maybe 90% of them never got shot. A lot of them were just pieces for the collection. 'In the gun world, many collectors will have as many as they can afford. And then they gain value, so it's a good investment. An interest and a hobby.' Heuermann also stands accused of dumping the remains of the seven people he is charged with murdering across Long Island in a bloody spree between 1993 and 2011. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him and is currently awaiting trial. 'The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets' is available to watch now on Peacock.

Daughter of notorious BTK Killer counsels kin of accused Gilgo Beach serial killer: ‘Shocked by the similarities'
The broken family of accused Gilgo Beach murderer Rex Heuermann got a helping hand from one of the few people who could provide it — the daughter of a notorious jailed serial killer. 'I know what it's like to live with a psychopath,' Kerri Rawson, the daughter of 'BTK Killer' Dennis Rader, who butchered 10 victims, said in Peacock's new docu-series on the Gilgo Beach case. Rawson's father, was one of the nation's most infamous serial killers, adopting his nickname for his affinity for binding, torturing and killing his victims — all while a married father of two. 5 BTK Killer Dennis Rader was convicted of killing 10 people while liing a double life. AFP via Getty Images 'When Rex was arrested my PTSD hit right away, because of what my family had gone through,' Rawson said in the three-part series, 'The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets.' Her thoughts 'immediately' went to Heuermann's family — including wife Asa and two kids, who were 'similar ages to what my brother and I were when my father was arrested '05,' she said. 'My heart just broke in two,' Rawson said. 'I was shocked by the similarities.' Rader — a former Cub Scout leader and Christ Lutheran Church higher-up — was finally busted Feb. 25, 2005, decades after slaughtering victims in the Wichita and Park City areas between 1974 and 1991. 'My father lived a double life,' Rawson told the filmmakers. 'He was hiding in plain sight for 31 years.' 5 Kerri Rawson is the daughter of jailed Kansas serial killer Dennis Rader, who called himself the BTK Killer. Peacock 5 Kerri Rawson said Rex Heuermann's wife, Asa Ellerup, and daughter, Victoria Heuermann, are living her nightmare. Dennis A. Clark The similarities between Rader and the allegations against Heuermann are chilling. Heuermann, a 59-year-old married architect with two children when he was arrested in July 2023, is accused of killing seven sex workers over a span of more than 30 years, mutilating several victims. Rader was also 59 when he was busted, with two children, including Rawson, who was 26 at the time of her dad's capture — the same age as Heuerman's daughter, Victoria, at the time of his arrest. Both men were arrested thanks to DNA matches drawn from the victims. The similarities weren't lost on Rader, who wrote to Fox News from inside the Kansas jail cell where he is serving a life sentence that Heuermann was 'a clone of me.' 5 BTK Killer Dennis Rader called accused Gilgo Beach Killer Rex Heuermann a 'clone of me' in a letter to Fox News. Newsday Rawson, who is seen visiting Heuermann's wife, Asa Ellerup, and daughter, Victoria Heuermann, in the three-part Peacock series, said she understands their nightmare. 'When you're talking about a father, their actions get placed on the family,' she said. 'I wasn't alive for seven of the 10 of my father's murders, and I was at the most 12 years old for the last. 'Why are you as a society putting that back on me? Why are you putting this on Rex's kids?' she asked. 'They had nothing to do with any of this.' 5 Peacock's new Gilgo Beach series includes first-ever interviews with Rex Heuermann's wife and daughter. Peacock But Rawson also believes Ellerup is in denial — and even rolls her eyes at the long-suffering wife's loyalty to her accused serial killer hubby during the docu-series. 'I'm seeing that Asa's stuck in that loop of going, he was here on this date and he was gone this day and he did this. And I understand what that's like, that fog of not knowing and questioning everything,' she told the filmmakers. 'I understand having reasonable questions. [But] is she in denial, is she lying, is she disassociated?' Rawson continues. 'The thing is when you're sitting in the cheap seats with popcorn, you're in hindsight land.'

Arnold Schwarzenegger Gives One Condition for Working With Chris Pratt
Originally appeared on E! Online Arnold Schwarzenegger isn't terminating the idea of working with his family. The Terminator actor shared that he would be willing to star in a movie alongside his and ex Maria Shriver's son Patrick Schwarzenegger and their son-in-law Chris Pratt—who married their daughter , 35, in 2019—under one important condition. "It's one of those things that if there's a great script, then of course, we would do it," Arnold exclusively told E! News correspondent Will Marfuggi at the Fubar season two premiere with Netflix Tudum June 12. "But you can't just make up this stuff. You can't just say, 'OK, let's just put the three together in a movie and not have a great script.'" Noting that those parameters should be a "given," the 77-year-old—who also shares daughter Christina Schwarzenegger, 33, and son Christopher Schwarzenegger, 27, with Maria, as well as son Joseph Baena, 27, with Mildred Baena—called on filmmakers to make it happen. As he put it, "You don't have to talk about it, just do it." (For more from Arnold, tune into E! News tonight, June 12, at 11 p.m.) More from E! "Whenever I see something good, I am interested in it," Arnold shared, "so we will see." But whether he's sharing the screen with Patrick or watching him from afar, the former bodybuilder is just happy to see the 31-year-old fulfill his longtime dream. "Patrick always had a love for show business," Arnold said. "He has spent a lot of time on the set with me when he was a kid. He was doing his homework in my movie trailer, he was watching me shooting on stage. I think he got the desire right then and there." And in the meantime, he's proud of the hard work he's put into the forthcoming season of Fubar, an action comedy series that follows a CIA operative as he's thrust out of retirement and back onto the field for one last job. "The second season is a lot, a lot of great, great action," Arnold said of the new installment, which premieres on Netflix June 12, "and also really funny moments." He added, "The actual sequences are very, very tough to do, especially when you do night shoots and all that. But it's a lot of fun."
