The True Story Behind Netflix's The Gringo Hunters

For more than two decades, a special team of Mexican police officers has quietly worked along the northern border to track down and deport foreign fugitives who cross into Mexico to escape criminal charges in their home countries. Known unofficially as The Gringo Hunters, the team operates out of Tijuana and specializes in locating and removing these fugitives—mostly Americans—who enter Mexico hoping to evade the U.S. legal system. Officially, they are called the International Liaison Unit of the Baja California State Police. Their real-life operations inspired Netflix's new series The Gringo Hunters (Los Gringo Hunters), premiering July 9. The drama is based on a 2022 Washington Post article that offered a rare look into how the unit tracks, arrests, and deports fugitives with speed and discretion. Here's everything you need to know about the real gringo hunters behind the Netflix series. A unit few outside Mexico had ever heard of Since its founding in 2002, the unit has deported more than 1,600 fugitives—mostly American men wanted for serious crimes such as homicide, kidnapping, sexual offenses, and drug trafficking. They average about 13 arrests per month. Among those captured are fugitives on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list, serial killers, and billionaires accused of securities fraud. The Gringo Hunters work in plain clothes, drive unmarked vehicles, and rely on intelligence from U.S. agencies such as the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Marshals. They are trained in both Mexican and U.S. legal systems and focus exclusively on high-impact cases. Part of their training includes observing people who stand out in Mexican communities—an essential skill when tracking suspects who often try to blend in. For example, fugitives often wear more shorts and flip-flops than locals and speak little Spanish. Officers also watch for erratic behavior and physical characteristics such as tattoos or scars documented in U.S. criminal databases. Instead of going through lengthy extradition procedures, the unit uses immigration violations to deport suspects quickly. Most arrests are completed within hours. Since U.S. agents cannot operate independently in Mexico, they rely on Mexican police to carry out arrests. This is not formal extradition, which requires a court process. Technically, fugitives are deported for breaking Mexican immigration law. The case that revealed the unit to the world Until 2022, the unit was largely unknown outside law enforcement circles. That changed when Washington Post international investigative correspondent Kevin Sieff embedded with the team as they prepared to arrest Damion Salinas, a 21-year-old American accused of murder in California. Sieff's article details how officers tracked Salinas in Ensenada, confirmed his identity, and coordinated with U.S. Marshals. The arrest took place roadside and was over within seconds. Salinas was deported almost immediately. The article offered a rare window into the unit's daily tactics and low-profile approach. Officers spend hours conducting surveillance in neighborhoods where fugitives are believed to be hiding. They travel in unmarked vehicles and avoid wearing uniforms to reduce the risk of alerting suspects. The quiet rewriting of a border narrative The unit's nickname emerged informally among locals as shorthand for their mission: finding and detaining foreign fugitives who believe crossing into Mexico puts them beyond the reach of justice. While the team does not officially embrace the name, it reflects a reversal of the traditional border narrative. Instead of Mexicans fleeing north, Americans are hiding south of the border, and being tracked down by Mexican law enforcement. Although Netflix's The Gringo Hunters dramatizes their story, the real officers operate quietly and efficiently. They arrest fugitives and swiftly return them to face justice, often without public attention or fanfare. Their work requires patience, precision, and close coordination with U.S. law enforcement.

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Where I live the new TV schedule is slow, but Netflix gets new releases from around the world and so my weekly list of new movies and shows on Netflix takes us around the globe. As part of my job as What to Watch's streaming editor, every week I look through every new Netflix Original coming to the world's biggest streaming service, and pick a handful of the most-watch additions that people are bound to watch. I only include ones that would be worthy of our lists of the best Netflix shows and best Netflix movies, bringing you only the top picks. This week the list is of new Netflix Originals coming between Saturday, July 5 and Friday, July 11. Netflix's Trainwreck series of hour-long docs based on headline-grabbing events continues with The Real Project X, which lands on Tuesday, July 8. The name alludes to an American coming-of-age film called Project X. The doc looks at a 2012 party in Haren, Netherlands, in which a 16-year-old accidentally made a Facebook event listing public instead of private. What transpired was a party that saw tens of thousands of prospective attendees, and slowly turned into a riot on the streets. Releases on Tuesday, July 8 From Netherlands we move over to Mexico for The Gringo Hunters, which comes out on Wednesday, July 9 and tells a story inspired by real workers. The Gringo Hunters is about a Mexican police unit which hunts down American criminals escaping across the border. Over several episodes they'll investigate cases and try to bring to justice runaways. Releases on Wednesday, July 9 Back to Europe! New thriller series Under a Dark Sun is set in Provence, France, on a prestigious flower farm. The series is about a mother on the run who finds work as a picker at the farm, however she becomes the prime suspect in the murder case of the owner of the farm. As the case continues it emerges that she was the next in line for the estate as she has secret connections with the family who owns it. Releases on Wednesday, July 9 Netflix loves its Asian-made zombie movies and the latest one is called Ziam, which was made in Thailand and comes out this week. Ziam follows a retired boxer who gives up his job to spend time with his girlfriend. However, the doctor where this girlfriend works is attacked by zombies and so he must dust off his knuckles and use his boxing fortitude to fight through the creatures and rescue his partner. Releases on Wednesday, July 9 Netflix fans might recognize the lead of the new German thriller Brick, as Matthias Schweighöfer was also in Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves on the streamer back in 2021. The movie, which is possibly a sci-fi or a horror (The description isn't clear), is about the residents of an apartment building who wake up one day to find a giant wall blocking them in the building. The tenants need to work together to find a way out and work out what's happening to them. Releases on Thursday, July 10 The only American production of the week, Too Much is an anticipated rom-com series created by Lena Dunham which you can watch this week. Too Much is about a New York woman who's rapidly losing friends, and eventually her partner leaves her too. She decides to start again by moving to London and upon arriving, quickly finds a new partner. The Gringo Hunters OTT Release Date: When and where to watch Harold Torres and Mayra Hermosillo's crime drama

The Gringo Hunters OTT Release Date: In a time when crime thrillers are flooding streaming platforms, this Mexican thriller offers something you haven't seen before. It flips the usual narrative, puts Mexico front and centre, and tells the story of a real elite police unit that does one job: track down American fugitives hiding across the border and send them back home to face justice. The Gringo Hunters is all set to premiere on Netflix on July 9, 2025. What is The Gringo Hunters all about? At the heart of the show is a fascinating, little-known reality. Based on journalist Kevin Sieff's eye-opening article for The Washington Post, the show follows Mexico's International Liaison Unit, often referred to as the 'Gringo Hunters.' These are officers whose job is to locate U.S. nationals who cross into Mexico to escape criminal charges back home. For years, these fugitives believed they could vanish into Tijuana or Mexico City, but this police unit has been proving them wrong, one arrest at a time. The Gringo Hunters' cast and crew The Gringo Hunters is led by Harold Torres, known for his intense performances in ZeroZeroZero. He's joined by Mayra Hermosillo from Thursday's Widows, who plays Gloria. Alongside them, you'll see Manuel Masalva (Narcos: Mexico), José María Yazpik, and a wide mix of actors from both sides of the border, including Sebastian Roché, Eric Nelsen, Jessica Lindsey, and Tyler Young. Behind the scenes, the show is in solid hands. The series is co-directed by a talented bunch - Alonso Alvarez, Natalia Beristain, Adrian Grunberg, and Jimena Montemayor. The writing is led by Jorge Dorantes, with executive producers like Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Tony Hernandez attached. The production is backed by Woo Films, Redrum, and Imagine Entertainment, with Netflix and The Washington Post both in on the collaboration.
