Is this the best movie of the 21st century? 500 Hollywood power players think so.

The people have spoken, and the best movie released since Jan. 1, 2000, has been chosen. And by people, we mean the 500 or so actors, directors, writers and other Hollywood power players The New York Times surveyed for its 100 best movies of the 21st century ranking, which came out with its top 20 on June 27. The likes of Pamela Anderson, Nicholas Sparks, Stephen King, Simu Liu, Sofia Coppola, Danielle Brooks, Brian Cox, Ava DuVernay, Molly Ringwald, Rachel Zegler and Mel Brooks had their say — and yes, you can even see each of their top 10 picks, Letterboxd style. Oscar-winning director Coppola apparently took a shining to the 2004 Pixar classic (and fellow Oscar winner) "The Incredibles," while Julianne Moore admitted she's not above a raunchy comedy like "Superbad" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." And Sparks isn't only watching soppy romances; he's also enjoying dramas like "Inception" and "Gladiator." Undeserved Oscar winners – and the ones that should have won What's the best movie released since 2000? None other than Bong Joon Ho's "Parasite," which in 2020 became the first ever non-English film to earn the best picture Oscar, ranked as the No. 1 highest-voted film in the NYT's survey. And no wonder, because it earned an eye-boggling 99% "fresh" rating from nearly 500 film reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. In 2019, USA TODAY's film critic Brian Truitt was close to giving the social commentary thriller full marks (he ended up giving three and a half of four stars). The Korean film "is expertly paced with its reveals, never falls apart (even when it descends into bloody chaos) and also features outstanding acting performances," he noted in his review. In case anyone was wondering, director Bong did not include any of his own films (which includes the recent "Mickey 17" as well as 2017's "Okja" and 2013's "Snowpiercer) in his top nine ranking. Peter Sohn hails being chosen to direct The Incredibles 3 as ‘dream come true'

Peter Sohn has described being chosen to direct The Incredibles 3 as 'a dream come true'. The 47-year-old filmmaker is known for Elementals, and helming the new movie marks a major milestone in his two-decade career with its maker Pixar. He was quoted in Variety saying about working with the company on the third Incredibles movie: 'I've always loved this family and what they represent — the messy, funny, heroic chaos of everyday life. To help tell their next chapter is a true honour.' The Incredibles 3 was announced at Disney's D23 Expo in late summer 2024. It will be the first entry in the series not helmed by Brad Bird, 66, who directed and wrote both the original 2004 film and its 2018 sequel. But Brad will remain on board as a producer and screenwriter for the third movie in The Incredibles franchise. He is currently attached to two other projects — the science fiction film Ray Gunn for Skydance and the historical drama 1906 for Disney. The Incredibles films follow Bob and Helen Parr, known to the world as Mr Incredible and Elastigirl, as they juggle family life with saving the world. In the first film, the couple tries to maintain a quiet suburban existence after the government outlaws superheroes. And the sequel focuses on the family's efforts to rehabilitate the public image of costumed heroes while battling a dangerous new cybercriminal. The Incredibles earned $630 million at the box office globally, while Incredibles 2 brought in $1.24 billion, becoming one of Pixar's highest-grossing releases. A full voice cast has not yet been confirmed for The Incredibles 3, and Disney has released no further plot details or a release date. The previous films featured performances from Craig T. Nelson, 80, Holly Hunter, 66, and Samuel L Jackson, 76. Peter Sohn's 2023 movie Elemental became a sleeper hit with nearly $500 million in global box office earnings. He has worked on numerous Pixar titles in roles ranging from artist to director, including Finding Nemo, Up, Wall-E, as well as the first two Incredibles films. Peter said to Variety about the prospect of working with Brad Bird on The Incredibles 3: 'Brad has been such a mentor to me. 'Working with him on the first two films shaped my whole approach to storytelling. To now be collaborating with him again, but in this new way, is both surreal and incredibly exciting.' Further announcements about the film are expected later this year.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder will be first regional WA town to host Pixar Putt mini-golf experience

Kalgoorlie-Boulder will be the first regional town in WA to host an internationally acclaimed minigolf experience. Pixar Putt will head to the Goldfields Oasis for an 11-day session from June 28 as part of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder's biennial Pop-Up Project initiative. Mayor Glenn Wilson said the city was proud to provide another special one-of-a-kind experience this winter, following the pop-up ice skating rink seen in a previous year. 'This is a big win for Kalgoorlie-Boulder and a great example of what we can achieve when we think outside the box and push for something different,' he said. 'It's not just about hosting an event — it's about creating memorable experiences for local residents and communities right across regional WA who will travel here for it.' 'As a dad, I'm really looking forward to tackling the course with my four-year-old, who's a huge Lightning McQueen fan. 'It's the kind of experience you'd usually find in Perth or Melbourne, so it's fantastic to have it here at home in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.' Featuring themed holes based on Toy Story, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Cars, and Inside Out 2, the course is designed for all ages. After-dark sessions for adults will also be offered, with a pop-up bar. TEG Experiences managing director Shane Harmon said he was excited to bring Pixar Putt to the region. 'Pixar Putt has had more than 700,000 minigolfers putting to infinity and beyond since we launched in 2019, and we are thrilled to be heading to Goldfields Oasis in Kalgoorlie-Boulder for the first time,' he said. 'We can't wait to showcase this Aussie fan-favourite attraction which has recently won a new legion of international fans in New York, Texas and Chicago. 'Kalgoorlie is the perfect location for Pixar Putt — there's plenty of space for patrons to have fun and kick some serious putt.'
