The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) will mark its 2025 edition, and this time, the spotlight shines on Bollywood icon Aamir Khan. The celebrated actor will hoist the Indian national flag on August 15 as part of the festival's annual Independence Day celebration. The annual flag hoisting ceremony at IFFM is one of the most cherished moments of the festival. It brings together artists, filmmakers, and members of the Indian and international film fraternity to honour the spirit of Indian cinema while celebrating India's identity abroad. Aamir Khan's Presence Adds Significance To IFFM 2025 Known for his powerful storytelling and socially impactful cinema, Aamir Khan's participation in the flag hoisting ceremony lends symbolic resonance to this annual tradition. From Lagaan to Sitaare Zameen Par, his body of work has found admiration not just in India but across global film communities. His association with IFFM this year beautifully aligns with the festival's longstanding commitment to inclusive narratives and cross-cultural dialogue. IFFM Festival Director On The Significance Of The Event Festival Director Mitu Bhowmik Lange reflected on the emotional importance of the tradition. He said, 'The flag hoisting ceremony at IFFM is more than just a formal tradition; it's a deeply emotional and unifying experience. About IFFM Supported by the Government of Victoria, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne is the largest celebration of Indian cinema held outside India. With a strong focus on inclusivity and representation, the festival champions storytelling across languages, regions, and identities. What To Expect At IFFM 2025 This year's edition will screen nearly 75 films that highlight themes of inclusivity, spanning gender, sexuality, race, disability, and women's representation. One of the most anticipated events is LGBTQ Pride Night, scheduled for August 22. It will serve as a vibrant celebration of queer cinema and the South Asian queer identity in Australia. A standout feature of the Pride Night will be the screening of the restored version of Badnam Basti (1971), directed by Prem Kapoor, widely regarded as India's first gay film. This screening is expected to be a powerful moment of reflection and pride for the LGBTQ+ community and allies. Another notable highlight includes acclaimed Indian actress Tillotama Shome's Bengali film Baksho Bondi, which has been selected as the opening film of the festival. As IFFM continues to serve as a bridge between Indian cinema and global audiences, Aamir Khan's presence at the flag hoisting ceremony adds both gravitas and a celebratory spirit to this year's edition.
