Fighting over the scraps: Are big-bucks global food chains pushing local players out of business?
Deep-pocketed foreign brands such as The Ivy and Popeyes are muscling in as local restaurants are hit by cost-of-living slowdown A wave of high-end international restaurants and fast-food brands is breaking through the Irish market, despite domestic players feeling the heat of an industry 'slowdown' amid the cost-of-living crisis. Several global foodie newcomers have targeted Ireland for expansion in recent years. Fine-dining groups like UK-based steakhouse Hawksmoor, French group Big Mamma and The Ivy have either opened or announced expansion plans in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Wimbledon-inspired dessert is a delicious slice of summer for tennis fans
While we all get into the Wimbledon spirit, one restaurant has put together a delicious tennis-inspired pudding. The Ivy has been serving tennis-lovers the 'centre court melting bomb' which includes a fluffy milk foam, chopped fresh strawberries, shortbread and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The luxurious pud is then drizzled with a silky strawberry sauce, making for a light and delectable end to your meal. We visited Brighton's Ivy in The Lanes to try the limited edition dessert and it did not disappoint. The strawberry sauce and the white chocolate shell were a perfect pairing and it was great fun to crack it open. The first bite was a perfect combination of creamy chocolate, tangy strawberry and crisp shortbread - a satisfying way to celebrate Wimbledon season. It is only available until Sunday, July 13. Before we delved into dessert, we picked a couple of courses off the main menu. To start I had the duck liver parfait accompanied by caramelised hazelnuts and apricot and apple chutney with toasted brioche. For pate lovers, this is the dream. The parfait was smooth and the chutney added a sweet edge to it. The duck liver parfait (Image: The Argus) I then opted for the sirloin steak with the classic parmesan and truffle chips, topped with peppercorn sauce. The steak was cooked perfectly, medium-rare, and was only elevated by the rich and spicy peppercorn sauce. The meal was washed down with a couple of cocktails - a Brighton bloom, Brighton Gin with strawberry puree, raspberry sorbet, lemon and rose syrup, and a Tatin old fashioned, Ron Santiago De Cuba Anejo, 30/40 Double Jus, Noix de Peres Chatreux, demerara and bitters. Make sure to swing by for your Wimbledon-inspired pudding this weekend - and maybe a cocktail or two.

Martina Navratilova refused entry into The Ivy because of her dog
Martina Navratilova was refused entry into The Ivy because of her dog. The 68-year-old tennis legend has been covering Wimbledon for the BBC and had decided to have dinner at the upmarket London cafe but their rules did not allow her to bring her pet pooch in with her. She wrote on X: "Well — tried to have dinner at the Ivy at Wimbledon, but they won't allow Lulu into the restaurant — so plan B." The sports star then clarified to her followers that her alternative plan actually worked out better as she dined in an Italian restaurant called Cent Anni. Alongside a photo of herself and Cent Anni's manager, she said: "Plan B was actually better - always a nice quiet and quick meal, great pasta and Lulu is welcome:), here with the big boss:)" One fan wrote to Martina to commend the restaurant for enforcing the rules despite the "tremendous pressure" they were under given her celebrity status. They wrote: "Well done to the staff that must have had tremendous pressure on them to make the rules apply to everyone, knowing full well who you are." But Martina quickly insisted that none of the staff had any idea who she was anyway. She replied: "They had no idea. I could have sat outside but then I couldn't eat because of all the people walking by. So sweet of you anyway." Before beginning her work on coverage for the annual tennis tournament, Martina had implored Emma Raducanu - who exited Wimbledon after a 7-6 6-4 defeat earlier this week - to find a resolution to her coaching situation amid her run to the quarter-finals at the Miami Open. In March, Martina told Sky Sports News: "If she stays healthy and plays this well, then she'll be seeded at Roland Garros. I think she'll move up the ranking well enough into the top 30. The biggest question mark is her health. "Hopefully she can sort out her coaching situation because she's been in a state of flux, but I think she needs to commit to somebody and stay with them for a little bit, see how that works. "If she played like she did against (Jessica) Pegula, then the sky's the limit."

Ahead of a fourth round match between Mirra Andreeva and Emma Navarro, Navratilova briefly mentioned her defeat to Andreeva's coach Conchita Martinez in the final in 1994 Mullins then said: "I was going to bring that up… well might chat about that as this match wears on." Only for Navratilova to cut in and sharply reply: "Let's not. Just kidding." Stay updated on the top South London stories.
