Bella Ramsey Becomes First Non-Binary Person to Earn Two Emmy Nominations
Bella Ramsey is making history for the non-binary community. On Tuesday, the non-binary actor earned a nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for their role in The Last of Us Season 2 — and with the nod, they become the first non-binary person to earn more than one Emmy nomination. Ramsey was first nominated in this category in 2023 for their role as Ellie in the show's first season. More from Rolling Stone The 2025 Emmy Nominations Are Here Lady Gaga Nears EGOT Status After Sports Emmy Win Nate Bargatze to Host 2025 Emmy Awards Ramsey has been very clear that gendered awards are 'very important' despite their non-binary identity. In an interview with Louis Theroux in May, the actor expressed how they wish there was 'an easy way around' honoring people who don't conform to the gender binary, 'but I think that it is really important that we have a female category and a male category.' 'I think it's so important that that's preserved, as well,' they said about ensuring women get nominated for awards. 'The recognition for women in the industry is preserved.' While Ramsey said they are OK with being included in an Actress category, the actor explained that they 'have a guttural, 'That's not quite right,' instinct [to it],' Ramsey said. 'But I just don't take it too seriously… it doesn't feel like an attack on my identity.' Also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series are Kathy Bates for Matlock, Angela Bassett for 9-1-1, Britt Lower for Severance, Emma D'Arcy for House of the Dragon, and Keri Russell for The Diplomat. Last year, Anna Sawai took home the award for her role in Shōgun. The Last of Us earned 16 nominations this year, bringing their total to 40 nods across the two seasons. The Last of Us Part II Remastered gets chronological mode in free update
Sony's Naughty Dog studio has rolled out a free update for The Last of Us Part II Remastered, giving players the option to play the game in chronological order for the first time. Available now on PS5 (Patch 2.1.0) and PC via Steam and Epic Games (Patch 1.5), the Chronological Mode rearranges the original non-linear narrative—told through flashbacks and time jumps—into a single continuous timeline. According to the PlayStation blog, the update is aimed at returning players who want a new way to engage with the story of Ellie and Abby. This update arrives just as HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 wraps up and with no third game on the immediate horizon. The Last of Us Part II Remastered update: What's New As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, Naughty Dog says the mode offers a different emotional arc and may highlight narrative parallels that were less visible before. For instance, players will see events like Ellie learning the guitar and her journey through Seattle unfold in an uninterrupted sequence. The studio says this was not a small task, given the game's complex structure. It also includes new in-game trophies tied to completing Chronological Mode and two unlockable character skins for No Return, the game's roguelike mode, dressing Joel and Tommy as Nathan and Sam Drake from Uncharted, in a nod to Naughty Dog's history. The patch also brings general bug fixes and performance improvements. Naughty Dog recommends that first-time players stick with the original non-linear format, but for returning fans, Chronological Mode offers a new lens on the story, particularly as the upcoming season of the show is expected to spotlight Abby's perspective.

Why You Don't have to Worry about Neil Druckmann Leaving HBO's The Last of Us
It was kind of expected that The Last of Us Season 2 was going to be met with some controversy, and with the recent news of Neil Druckmann leaving the HBO series; more people online are just getting worried about the third season. Just when people didn't think ND's exit could make things worset, Druckmann's writing partner Halley Gross is also leaving the series: Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross have BOTH decided to step away from 'The Last of Us – Season 3'. this is crazy. — skoop🍃 (@dimlitknightt) July 2, 2025 Already this is sparking some discussion in the fandom who have now branded showrunner Craig Mazin the villain of the series. Like Ryan Condal for House of the Dragon , Mazin is now being touted as the man who 'ruined' The Last of Us , and fans are just expecting everything to go downhill from there. The thing is, I don't think that fans have that much to worry about. If you follow the production and podcasts of the series, you'll know that Mazin and Druckmann have been very nice to each other about their partnership, with Druckmann even going so far as to say that he's jealous that he didn't get to think about the additions that Mazin thought to bring to the show—like Sam being deaf in Season 1 or the whole change in Bill's story. For some added context, here's what Mazin had to say about Druckmann and Gross' exit: 'I'll continue to work with our brilliant cast and crew to deliver the show our audience has come to expect. We are so grateful to Neil and Halley Gross for entrusting the incredible story of The Last of Us Part II to us, and we're just as grateful to the millions of people around the world who tune in.' If anything, Druckmann and Gross will probably have no time to work on the series because Naughty Dog had already revealed Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet , and fans are now expecting that game to release in 1-2 years. With the studio not having released a game in five years , the pressure is definitely on for Druckmann to deliver a definite crowd-pleaser with his next game; and he probably won't be able to focus if he has the HBO series to worry about. With Druckmann and Gross already telling Abby's story via the game, it does feel like they don't really need to closely watch the production of the HBO series this time around. After all, Mazin already has all the pieces that he needs; and I'm hoping that Druckmann and Gross are always open to consult if they need them. It's just that a lot of people are already being negative about Mazin being the sole showrunner in Season 3, and I think a lot of it is unwarranted. He's already proven himself to be an efficient writer; and he has a lot of love for the source material. If you ask me, if Intergalactic wasn't such a pressing matter, I'm sure Druckmann would have kept staying on the series. At least, that's what it looks like from where I'm standing. No release date has been set for the third season of The Last of Us .

‘The Last of Us' Season 2 Ending Explained: Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann Explain Why They Made [SPOILER'S] Death 'Worse'
The Last of Us Season 2 ended with violence and horror, as you'd come to expect from the bleak HBO hit. Ellie (Bella Ramsey) continued her hunt for Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), alienating her from Jesse (Young Mazino) and putting her briefly in the clutches of the blood-thirsty Seraphites. However, what's probably really sticking out in your mind is either the moment where Ellie seemingly realizes that this endless cycle of violence is useless or that final, shocking, awful showdown. **Spoilers for Season 2 Episode 7, now streaming on MAX** The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7 follows Ellie as she heads into a battle between the Wolves and Seraphites to find Abby. After nearly dying at the hands of a Seraphite executioner, Ellie manages to sneak into the aquarium where Abby's friends are hiding. There, she walks in on Mel (Ariela Barer) and Owen (Spencer Lord) debating Abby's latest orders. Ellie pulls her gun on them and demands they show her on a map where Abby is. Owen instead reaches for his gun. Acting on instinct, Ellie shoots him before he hits her. Not only Owen dies, but Mel is killed after a second bullet clips her jugular. Here's where the horrible reality of never-ending vengeance finally crushes Ellie. Mel is pregnant. The dying woman begs Ellie to perform a makeshift Cesarean delivery before she bleeds out, but the shellshocked Ellie is frozen in fear. After Mel dies, Ellie is discovered by Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Jesse. They shepherd her back to the theater where Dina (Isabela Merced) is waiting. Ellie's quest for revenge is over. They're going to go home. Except they're not! Ellie and Jesse hear Tommy scuffling with someone in the theater lobby and they run, guns ready, into the fray. Abby is there and she shoots Jesse, killing him. Holding Tommy at gunpoint, she demands Ellie come out with her hands up. The sequence ends with Abby pointing her gun at Ellie, complaining that she let the girl live only for her to waste it, and then seemingly shooting our heroine. The gun goes off, the show cuts to black, and then we flashback three days earlier, to the W.L.F. HQ. So what the heck is going on? Is Tommy really dead? Is Ellie dead? How is Mel's death different from the video game? Why are The Last of Us showrunners so brutal? Here's everything you need to know about the end of The Last of Us Season 2 on HBO… DECIDER recently sat in on a virtual press conference with The Last of Us showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann in which they answered for their crimes — er, explained some of those brutal decisions. Much of the violence we see in The Last of Us Season 2 finale is pulled directly from the video games. Jesse is also killed by Abby in The Last of Us II and the showrunners brushed off the suggestion that they might have spared his life in the HBO show. 'His fate was always sealed,' Druckmann said. Mazin added that Jesse's death is going to have a major impact on Ellie's romance with Dina. 'It's an interesting situation because Jesse dies in part because of Ellie,' Mazin said. 'But Ellie doesn't pull the trigger. Abby does.' 'So now the question is, who does she blame? I'm a big believer that once you start asking, 'Who do I blame?', you're already down the wrong path,' Mazin said. 'Jesse's death is going to change things for her, but how we play that out, we have to wait and see.' Mel's death, on the other hand, plays out quite differently from how it does in the video game. In The Last of Us II, she attacks Ellie and Ellie kills her in self defense. In the show, Mel's death is 'a true collateral damage moment,' according to Mazin. 'And then I decided to make it worse.' Everything with the reveal of Mel's pregnant belly as she dies is new to the HBO show. It's designed not only to break Ellie, but force the audience to reappraise what we think of the heroine. 'If you're rooting for Ellie, it'll make you feel dirty,' Druckmann said. When asked why they ended the season on a cliffhanger, the showrunners revealed they hashed out different endings, but Druckmann said, 'Whatever we entertained didn't stick for very long. This always felt like the natural end point for the season.' But it's not the natural end point for the show… Yes, HBO has already confirmed that they will be making The Last of Us Season 3. In fact, The Last of Us Season 3 will continue to adapt the events of The Last of Us II. That video game not only follows the story of Joel and Ellie, but puts the player in Abby's shoes. 'There is another side to this story that we have yet to really delve into,' Craig Mazin said during the press conference. 'There's no question that Abby is the hero of her story. Kaitlyn Dever is the hero of a story always, you know? I mean, if you have Kaitlyn Dever, you use a Kaitlyn Dever.' The final sequence in The Last of Us Season 2 flashes back to Seattle Day 1, but we're seeing Abby's version of what happened. The Last of Us Season 3 will tackle Abby's story. The showrunners also teased that they will provide answers to several questions fans might have. 'What is going on? How did that war start? How did the Seraphites start? Who is the prophet? What happened to her? What does Isaac want? What's happening at the end of Episode 7? What is this explosion? What is all of it?' Mazin said. 'And all of that will become clear.'
