Mörda teams up with internationally acclaimed Soweto Gospel Choir

Mörda and the Soweto Gospel Choir are to join forces for the History of House show on Mandela Day. The Road to Bassline Fest will present History of House as a genre-defying live show headlined by Afrohouse maestro Mörda and the globally acclaimed Soweto Gospel Choir. Taking place on July 18 at The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, this one-night only event promises a celebration of South African sound, soul and storytelling. The show will see the Grammy-winning Soweto Gospel Choir infuse classic house anthems such as Silence and Ride Like the Wind with their trademark harmonies and a uniquely local flavour, while Mörda, formerly of Black Motion, brings the heat with hits from his Asante trilogy, including the powerful single Glory. Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Mörda said he is looking forward to the experience. 'I want people to dance, to feel free.' 'We can't wait to showcase our take on these evergreen house classics,' said Shimmy Jiyane of the choir. Opening the show is rising star Brandon Aura, fresh from wowing crowds at Fête de la Musique, who will deliver his blend of folk-pop with an African twist. The event is supported by Sampra, BET and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, with a call to action for attendees to support the 'It's In Your Hands' campaign by donating blankets or contributing during ticket purchases.

Thandiswa Mazwai Tiny Desk Concert reaches 1 million views

Thandiswa Mazwai alongside a jazz quartet will be performing music from her albums "Belede" and "Sankofa" at The Lyric Theatre at Johannesburg's Gold Reef City. Image: Armand Hough / Independent Newspapers South African music legend Thandiswa Mazwai's episode on the National Public Radio (NPR) Tiny Desk Concert series has reached 1 million views. Affectionately known as 'King Tha,' she appeared on the popular YouTube show in April 2024. Her episode was listed among the '10 Best Tiny Desk Concerts of 2024'. Mazwai had delivered a spiritual and breathtaking Tiny Desk performance in Washington, D.C., performing her well-known and cherished hits such as 'Nizalwa Ngobani?' and 'Ingoma.' The episode reaching 1 million views comes ahead of her show at The Lyric Theatre at Johannesburg's Gold Reef City. Playing with a Jazz quartet, the icon will be performing music from her albums 'Belede' and 'Sankofa' on Sunday, June 29. Mazwai shared her excitement about performing the body of works. 'It is a special treat for our fans who always ask to see this music live. 'Belede' is of course, a very special album for me and we are also celebrating a year since the release of 'Sankofa'.' 'Belede' is Mazwai's third solo studio album, released in 2016, a collection of reinterpretations of legendary South African Jazz and protest anthems from the 1950s and 1960s. 'Sankofa' is Mazwai's fourth studio album and was released in May 2024. 'Sankofa' is a Ghanaian Twi word that means 'to go back and fetch what has been left behind'. The making of this record embodied that idea. Recorded in Johannesburg, Dakar, and New York, the album combines archival Xhosa samples (which were sourced from the International Library of African Music at Rhodes University), jazz and West African music. 'It is about a celebration of the pan-African spirit, healing old wounds, and returning to what honours us." 'Belede' and 'Sankofa' have a strong jazz influence and Mazwai's show will put together a special lineup of musicians to celebrate some of the people who played and the influences that created the music. Restaurant review: I'd never been to this much-loved Belfast spot... boy was I missing out

It's very clear to see why Bo Tree Kitchen remains such a popular venue After more than two hours watching the play Nell Gwynn at The Lyric Theatre and missing out on the warm weather we've been experiencing, my friend and I decided on a light dinner and feelings of virtue. Not a chance. Both of us had forensically examined the menu of Bo Tree Kitchen ahead of entering the restaurant. No one wants to be caught off guard and — take it from us — no one wants to order a wee dinner there.
