What to watch this week: ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer', ‘Tanvi the Great'

This franchise extension, the fourth film in the series, should test the limits of 1990s nostalgia (does anyone really care to see Freddie Prinze Jr. now?). Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt reprise their roles from the 1997 I Know What You Did Last Summer. Their characters are sought out by a new bunch of youngsters who've inadvertently killed someone and are now getting threatening messages. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who's written the film with Sam Lansky. (In theatres) A still from 'Untamed'. A woman is found dead in Yosemite National Park. Agent Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) suspects it might not be a mere accident. Untamed is a thriller series created by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) and Elle Smith (The Marsh King's Daughter). Also starring Sam Neill, Wilson Bethel, Rosemarie DeWitt and Lily Santiago. (Netflix) A still from 'Tanvi the Great'. Tanvi (Shubhangi Dutt), a 21-year-old with autism, decides to join the army. She's helped in this by her mother (Pallavi Joshi) and grandfather, a former colonel (Anupam Kher). Directed by Kher. (In theatres) A still from 'Apocalypse in the Tropics'. A 2024 film that tracks the increasing influence of the evangelical movement in Brazil and its effect on the country's politics. Petra Costa's documentary gains access to conservative televangelist Silas Malafaia, a key supporter of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival last year. (Netflix)

‘Untamed' takes the gritty murder mystery to a new locale: Yosemite National Park

Within minutes of his arrival at the crime scene, Turner establishes himself as the most competent agent in the park — and also the most unpopular, as he swiftly alienates his colleagues with his standoffish behavior. Only his longtime boss and mentor Paul Souter (Sam Neill) has the patience to put up with his attitude. That is, until Turner gets paired up with an energetic rookie, former LAPD cop Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago), who needs to learn the ropes of solving crimes in the wilderness. Her first lesson requires her to travel by horse instead of car, a strategy that Turner argues is crucial for tracking clues through rough terrain. (L to R) Sam Neill as Paul Souter, Eric Bana as Kyle Turner. Ricardo Hubbs/Netflix/RICARDO HUBBS/NETFLIX Created by screenwriters Mark L. Smith ('American Primeval') and Elle Smith ('The Marsh King's Daughter'), 'Untamed' is more polished and mature than your average Netflix original, but it isn't exactly breaking new ground. Virtually every element of this miniseries is founded on a well-worn genre cliché, from the interplay between the gruff Turner and his upbeat sidekick to the structure of their investigation, uncovering sordid secrets about the deceased Jane Doe. As Turner tries to figure out what the woman was doing in Yosemite and how she came to die, he must also confront the fallout of an old, unsolved case that continues to haunt his career. Advertisement Best known for co-writing the Oscar-winning Leonardo DiCaprio Western ' Opening with a terrifically perilous rock-climbing scene, 'Untamed' leans into its title, constantly reminding us of the dangers of the Yosemite landscape. Epic in scope, the park spans hundreds of thousands of acres, full of mountains and forests where a person could easily die or vanish without trace. Yet there's still a small-town vibe to Turner's interactions with the locals; a diverse population that includes National Parks employees, hippie squatters and a Native American community, many of whom he's known for years. Given what you know of Kyle Turner so far, you probably won't be surprised to hear that he lives alone in a log cabin, drunk-dialing his ex-wife ( Advertisement Among the supporting cast, Lily Santiago provides a relatable counterpoint to Turner, and we meet a handful of memorable side-characters, including Wilson Bethel as a suspicious, gun-toting Yosemite local. Neill, the other big name star attached to the project, is given shockingly little to do for most of the season, to the point where you may wonder what he's doing there. Tapping into the UNTAMED Starring: Eric Bana, Sam Neill, Lily Santiago, Rosemary DeWitt. On Netflix

‘Untamed' brings Eric Bana into a murder mystery set in the wilds of Yosemite

'Untamed,' a quasi-police drama premiering Thursday on Netflix, is a vacation from most crime shows, set not in a big city or cozy village but in the wilds of Yosemite National Park. (Never mind that the series was shot in British Columbia, which has nothing to apologize for when it comes to dramatic scenery, and whose park rangers are not threatened by draconian budget cuts nor their parks by politicians' desire to sell off public lands.) The mountains and valleys, the rivers and brooks, the occasional deer or bear are as much a part of the mise-en-scène as the series' complicated, yet essentially straightforward heroes and villains. Lacking big themes, it's not so much meat-and-potatoes television as fish and corn grilled over a camp fire, and on the prestige scale it sits somewhere between 'Magnum P.I.' and 'True Detective,' leaning toward the former. Created by Mark L. Smith ('American Primeval') and Elle Smith ('The Marsh King's Daughter') and starring Eric Bana and Sam Neill, Antipodean actors wearing American accents once again, it's a limited series, though, for a while, it has the quality of a pilot, introducing characters that could profitably be reused — with perhaps a little less of the trauma peeking out at every corner. Of course, if the show becomes a fantabulous success, the Netflix engineers may contrive a way to make it live again; it's happened before. 'Untamed' starts big. Two climbers are making their way up the face of El Capitan when a woman's body comes flying over the cliff, gets tangled in their ropes and hangs suspended, dead. She is hanging there still — the climbers have been rescued — when Investigative Services Branch special agent Kyle Turner (Bana) rides in on his horse. 'Here comes f—ing Gary Cooper,' mutters grumbling ranger Bruce Milch (William Smillie) to new ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago), a former police officer (and single mother, with a threatening ex) newly arrived from Los Angeles. (The horse, says Milch, who regards it as a high horse, gives him 'a better angle to look down on us lowly rangers.') What are the odds on Vasquez becoming Turner's (junior) partner? And on a difficult relationship developing into a learning curve ('This is not L.A. — things happen different out here') and turning almost … tender? More heroically proportioned and handsome than anyone else in the show, a man of the forest with superior tracking skills, Turner is also a mess — a taciturn mess, which also makes him seem stoic — barely holding himself together, drinking too much, living in a cabin in the woods filled with unpacked boxes, undone by the unaddressed family tragedy that broke him and his marriage. (The dark side of stoicism.) Sympathetic remarried ex-wife Jill (Rosemarie DeWitt, keeping it real), who herself is only 'as happy as I can be, I guess,' and sympathetic boss Paul Souter (Neill), try to keep him straight. 'You've locked yourself away in this park, Kyle,' Souter tells Turner. 'It's not healthy.' Turner, however, prefers 'most animals to people — especially my horse.' Nevertheless, he has a couple of friends: Shane Maguire (Wilson Bethel), a wildlife manager — that means he shoots things, so be forewarned — also living in the woods, but without the cabin, is the toxic one; Mato Begay (Trevor Carroll), an Indigenous policeman, the nontoxic one. And he's sleeping with a concierge at the local nice hotel, just so that element is covered; it's otherwise beside the point. If the dialogue often has the flavor of coming off a page rather than out of a character, it gets the job done, and if the characters are essentially static, people don't change overnight, and consistency is a hallmark of detective fiction. The narrative wisely stays close to Turner and/or Vasquez; there are enough twists and tendrils in the main overlapping plots without running off into less related matters. (Keeping the series to six episodes is also a plus, and something to be encouraged, makers of streaming series. Your critic will thank you for it.) Still, between the hot cases and the cold cases, with their collateral damage; hippie squatters from central casting chanting 'Our Earth, our land;' a mysterious gold tattoo, indigenous glyphs and old mines — there is an especially tense scene involving a tight tunnel and rising water — the show stays busy. Though last-minute heavy surprises don't register emotionally — trauma overload, maybe — you will not be left wanting for answers, or closure. And you will learn quite a bit about vultures and their dining habits — not what you might think.

Netflix's new mystery thriller series looks like an intense ride — and we just got another trailer

Netflix has just dropped a fresh trailer for the streaming service's new mystery thriller, "Untamed," and now the show definitely has a spot on my watchlist. That's no huge surprise, to be fair; I was already intrigued by the teaser trailer that launched last month. However, this new look at the show gives us a clearer idea of the mystery at hand... and has me way more invested in getting to the bottom of this new case. The first teaser felt like more of a mood piece; it boasted a tense score and hints that something sinister was afoot within the wilderness of Yosemite. While this longer trailer naturally features even more stunning scenery, it tees up the case at hand. A woman fell to her death from the top of El Capitan... but National Park Service agent Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) isn't so sure it was an accident, and he's determined to find what, or who, she was running from. And with potentially connected killings (and hints at Kyle's past) also sprinkled in, claustrophobic shots of caves and a vertigo-inducing rappelling shot, this new "Untamed" teaser sure makes this new mystery thriller with bite, and one that'll make the most of its wild setting. Plus, seeing as many of the streamer's recent releases have been worthwhile watches, I'm hoping that "Untamed" continues that streak when it premieres next week. If you're not yet clued up on "Untamed," the series was created by Mark L. Smith ("American Primeval", "The Revenant") and Elle Smith ("The Marsh King's Daughter"). Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Netflix's synopsis for the series pitches the show as follows: "A character-driven mystery-thriller that follows Kyle Turner (played by Bana), a special agent for the National Parks Service who works to enforce human law in nature's vast wilderness. The investigation of a brutal death sends Turner on a collision course with the dark secrets within the park, and in his own past." Speaking to Tudum, co-creator Elle Smith elaborated on one of the things that's weighing Kyle down: he's haunted by an old case he didn't follow through on properly. "What we're seeing happen in real time is the grief that he's going through," she says, "but also what he can do for the next girl, what he can do for this case, and how can he serve her family by solving this case." Eric Bana leads the "Untamed" cast, but he'll be joined by "Jurassic Park" alum, Sam Neill as Yosemite's chief park ranger, Paul Souter, plus Rosemarie DeWitt as Turner's ex-wife, Jill Bodwin, Lily Santiago as Turner's new partner and former LA cop, Naya Vasquez, and Wilson Bethel as Yosemite's wildlife management officer, Shane Maguire. "Untamed" will run for six episodes and will premiere exclusively on Netflix on Thursday, July 17. Looking for something else to watch in the meantime? Netflix's next mystery thriller series drops a trailer — and I can't wait to see Eric Bana hunting a killer

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. If you were one of the many people who tuned into Netflix's "American Primeval" earlier this year, the streaming service just dropped an intense teaser trailer for creator Mark L. Smith's next Netflix project — and it's streaming soon. Created with Elle Smith ("The Marsh King's Daughter"), "Untamed" is billed as a "character-driven mystery thriller" that revolves around a murder in the grounds of Yosemite National Park. In this six-episode series, we'll see Eric Bana step into frame as Kyle Turner, an Investigative Services Branch agent on the hunt for a killer. The problem is, the murderer apparently knows the park as well as Turner does ... and there are dark, dangerous secrets lurking in both the park and Turner's past. The above "Untamed" teaser naturally shows us some stunning scenes from the park itself... but that tense, rising score hints that something sinister is afoot. And when Bana tells a colleague, "Things happen different out here," the trailer pivots, offering a montage of stars, snatches of action, a decomposed body, and a bone-crunching sound as someone flings themself into a tree. It's not much to go on, but as a tone-setting piece, it looks intense. And if you can't wait to see the mystery solved, you'll be pleased to know "Untamed" premieres exclusively on Netflix on Thursday, July 17. Netflix has already released a short plot summary of what to expect from "Untamed." It reads: "A character-driven mystery-thriller that follows Kyle Turner (played by [Eric] Bana), a special agent for the National Parks Service who works to enforce human law in nature's vast wilderness. The investigation of a brutal death sends Turner on a collision course with the dark secrets within the park, and in his own past." Over on Tudum, though, we've gotten a few more details. As you've seen above, Turner is accompanied on his investigation by Naya, a mother who's swapped her life in Los Angeles for life as a rookie park ranger. 'Because Vasquez is new to the park, we get to see the park through her eyes,' co-showrunner Elle Smith tells Tudum. 'We get to understand what this job is, and see the beauty of the park, but also the dangers.' In addition to Bana, "Untamed" also stars Sam Neill as Yosemite's chief park ranger, Paul Souter, Rosemarie DeWitt as Turner's ex-wife, Jill Bodwin, and Wilson Bethel as Shane Maguire, a former army ranger who's now the park's wildlife management officer.
