'Almost Cops' review: Familiar yet fun

Almost every film in the buddy cop genre operates at a nimble zone that makes it difficult to take it too seriously. But some films tend to be aware of this potential pitfall and lean into their tropes and come out entertaining. Gonzalo Fernandez Carmona's Dutch film Almost Cops on Netflix is a case in point. The film manages to be gleefully entertaining with an array of clever pop culture references, hilarious one-liners, and earnest performances. Unlike your regular buddy cop comedy, it does not start and end with the same two lead characters. It begins with Jandino Asporaat's Ramon experiencing a dream sequence where he serves as a security officer at a bank in Rotterdam. He talks a robber out of a heist plan while negotiating with the other, more aggressive thieves. Soon, Ramon comes back to his daily reality, his daily grind, where everybody else treats him as just another community service officer (CSO). Drug peddlers disrespect him, as do cops for failing to stop crime in the city. There are no major surprises in Almost Cops; the film is as predictable as it can get in terms of the crime thriller aspect. However, it commits itself fully to mindless, often rollicking fun. There is a hilarious reference to how Matt Damon 'needs escaping' in many of his films, including The Martian and Elysium. The joke practically writes itself: Damon in Distress. A stretch involving Ramon and his penchant for sandwiches is particularly funny because it comes soon after he fails at his job. And a chase involving go-karts is silly yet exciting at the same time. The film maintains a high level of energy throughout. And at a deeper level, it has poignant themes, such as Ramon's steadfast commitment to community service and aspirations to become a law enforcement officer, as well as Jack's realisation about where the true essence of service lies. The film also pokes fun at corruption in Dutch society. Everyone —from CSOs and CID officers to industrialists—faces constant sarcasm from people who exist below and above them in society just for being who they are. While the film does not explore these nuances deeply enough, they are interesting to look at and add some flavour to what otherwise would have been a straightforward comedy caper. Almost Cops admirably resists a tendency to fall prey to buddy cop genre trappings for a large part of its runtime. We only see the two leads address each other as 'bros' towards the end. The film manages to make us care about the characters and still keeps us entertained by leveraging the strengths of the genre. That is a job well done—well, almost.

Restaurants to Try This Weekend in Las Vegas — July 18

It's the most pressing question of the weekend: 'Where should I eat?' Here, Eater editors issue tried and true recommendations for places to check out this weekend. For a low-key group hang: H-Mart Food Hall Janna Karel I'm a big proponent of running errands with friends. We all have to hit the pharmacy or Costco eventually — why not turn it into a hangout? Last week's grocery run became a group outing to H-Mart. After piling pink pineapples, Melona bars, chile crisps, and frozen bao buns into a shared cart, the food hall was calling. I went for the crunchy fried chicken from Bb.q Chicken, slathered in a sweet-and-spicy sauce just hot enough to catch me off guard between bites of salty fries. At Jopok Topokki, I got a bowl of chewy tteokbokki and briny fish cakes swimming in glossy, gochujang-rich sauce — deep, smoky, and satisfying. I capped it off with a brown sugar milk tea from Tiger Sugar. Weekends can get hectic at the newly opened H-Mart, but going in the evening (they're open until 10 p.m.) helps. Sharing a cart — and a few snacks at the food hall — makes it all feel more like an outing than an errand. 2620 South Decatur Boulevard, Las Vegas, NV 89102. — Janna Karel, editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest For a solo dinner: Other Mama Janna Karel The bar at Other Mama is one of the best places in town to post up for a solo dinner. Both the cocktail and sushi bars serve the full menu. On my last visit, I had the sushi counter all to myself and my book (Andy Weir's The Martian). I started with blistered shishito peppers and a cool, citrusy remoulade, followed by a roll of assorted sashimi and avocado, tempura-fried until crunchy but still light, and finished with eel sauce and spicy aioli. My miso black cod was tender and flaky, its marinade sticky and sweet around the edges. The book wasn't really for me (first-person narration undercuts the whole mortal peril thing), but the cocktail — mint syrup, lime, cucumber — absolutely was. 3655 South Durango Drive #6, Las Vegas, NV 89147. — Janna Karel, editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest For a savory meatball: Ai Pazzi Janna Karel Fabio Viviani of Top Chef fame has opened Ai Pazzi in Summerlin, taking over the former Spiedini Fiamma space at the JW Marriott. The newly renovated restaurant blends Italian classics with a dash of Vegas glam. An oversized meatball gets the luxe treatment — made with wagyu, ricotta, and a rich tomato sugo fragrant with basil, perfect for swiping with garlicky grilled bread. My favorite dish was the dimpled orecchiette, tossed with spiced duck sausage and charred fennel. Don't skip the tableside caprese: hand-pulled mozzarella draped over heirloom tomatoes, finished with a drizzle of olive oil and aged balsamic. 221 N. Ryan Gosling's ‘Project Hail Mary' trailer breaks viewings record

Ryan Gosling's new sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary has broken trailer viewing records, gaining more than 400 million views since it was released online on 30 June. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie), the film is based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Andy Weir (author of 'The Martian') and stars Gosling as Ryland Grace, a man who wakes up on a space station. Snag is that he's not an astronaut. He's a science teacher with no recolection of what his mission is. He slowly learns that he was sent into outer space to reverse the impact of a phenomena causing the sun to die out – something which recalls one of Danny Boyle's best films, Sunshine. However, he won't be searching for a solution on his own... Check out the trailer below - which has already achieved more than 400 million views across various platforms, which is a record for an original movie (i.e. not a remake or sequel): This sci-fi drama (with a comedic tone) also stars the great Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann, Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest) - check out our interview with Hüller here – and is set to be released in March 2026. Both directors Lord and Miller both posted matching thank you messages on X: 'Holy Moly! Thank you all you glorious generous fans of movies / books / near light speed space travel / the Sun for pushing the trailer for Project Hail Mary past 400 million views – the most in one week for a non-sequel non-remake original film trailer… ever. Can't wait to thank some of you in person at San Diego Comic-Con in Hall H with our pals Ryan, Andy, and Drew (Goddard, screenwriter) ….and a few other surprises…' Excited yet? We are. Project Hail Mary hits theaters on 20 March 2026.

Project Hail Mary author's other ‘sci-fi masterpiece' available to stream

Project Hail Mary is one of the most talked about upcoming blockbusters for next year, but there's another gripping science fiction thriller you should check out first Science fiction fans can stream this critically acclaimed blockbuster right now ahead of the new Ryan Gosling-led thriller, Project Hail Mary. The upcoming space epic will be hitting cinemas next March and a recent trailer has teased a high-octane thrill ride beyond the solar system. ‌ Starring Gosling as school science teacher Ryland Grace, he's plunged headfirst into a dangerous outer space mission to protect the Earth from catastrophe - but can he save his own life in the process? ‌ Helmed by the genius directors behind 21 Jump Street and Into the Spider-Verse, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, this jaw-dropping adaptation of Andy Weir's bestselling novel is guaranteed to be a must-watch cinematic experience. Sci-fi readers will already be well-acquainted with Weir as the author of the equally gripping novel The Martian, which was adapted into a major film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon back in 2015. 10 years later, this nail-biting space survival thriller remains one of the most beloved sci-fi films of the century so far - and fans can stream it right now. Whether you've already experienced this riveting space adventure or it's somehow passed you by, make sure you stream The Martian on Disney+ at some point before March to get yourself well-prepared for Project Hail Mary. One five-star Google review calls it: 'An Absolute Masterpiece of Sci-Fi Cinema.' ‌ They went on: 'Adapted from Andy Weir's equally captivating novel, this film takes you on an exhilarating journey to the red planet, Mars. 'From the very first scene to the closing credits, The Martian is a thrilling and suspenseful rollercoaster of human ingenuity, resilience, and survival. 'Matt Damon's portrayal of Mark Watney, an astronaut stranded on Mars, is brilliant. His charismatic and witty performance keeps you engaged throughout the film.' ‌ Someone else raved: 'What makes The Martian so rewatchable is its tone. It's intense when it needs to be, but never loses that touch of optimism and wit that makes it so enjoyable. ‌ 'The soundtrack fits perfectly, the pacing keeps you engaged, and the visuals of Mars are stunning without ever feeling overwhelming. 'It's a film that makes space feel both terrifying and oddly comforting, a rare mix. Whether you're into science fiction, survival stories, or just well-made cinema, The Martian is the kind of film you'll gladly watch more than once.' The accolades continued over on Letterboxd, where yet another five-star review says: 'An effortlessly engrossing and excellently rendered science fiction epic of survival, Ridley Scott's Martian immediately ranks as one of the director's most satisfying works. ‌ 'A love letter to the power of science, problem solving, and human will, the film provides a smart and soaring experience that rivets as much as it satisfies. 'Scott and company tell a story that is buoyant, nail-biting, and life affirming.' This modern masterpiece isn't leaving Disney+ any time soon, so there's plenty of time and absolutely no excuse not to stream one of Damon's best blockbusters before the torch is passed to Gosling next year. The Martian is available to stream on Disney+.

Project Hail Mary: Ryan Gosling Stars in Next Movie from the Writer of The Martian

Andy Weir is best known for being the author of The Martian , and the film was praised for being completely accurate when it comes to the premise of someone trying to survive in Mars. Now his other book, Project Hail Mary is getting an adaptation, and we just got our first trailer starring Ryan Gosling. Check this out: Here's the logline: 11.9 Light-years from home. 6th grade science teacher. 1 chance to save us all. Besides Gosling, one big hook with this movie is that it's being directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller; who are going out of their superhero/comedy box for a sci-fi blockbuster. Funnily enough, Lord and Miller kind of lost their sci-fi card when they were fired from the Han Solo movie; and now they're working with Gosling, who is set to star in his own Star Wars movie directed by Shawn Levy. Anyone whose read the book Project Hail Mary can't help but gush about it, and the trailer has a lot of them excited. Looking at it with fresh eyes though, it does kind of look like the same premise as The Martian, with the main character spending a huge time alone in space; and we'll have to watch him survive by himself—also video diaries look like they're going to be a regular part of the movie. Hopefully we'll get to see more of the movie soon. Personally, I think it looks fantastic; and it does look like the film is also going to delving into all the logistical complexities of transporting just one person lightyears away. Watch out for Project Hail Mary when it comes to cinemas on March 20, 2026.
