'Nobody's got $4,500,000': The moment Beatles legend saved Monty Python
Eric Idle has opened up on how one unlikely music legend saved Monty Python when all hope seemed lost. Idle – alongside John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam, and Sir Michael Palin – founded the comedy troupe in 1969, which came to prominence with sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus. Live shows, books, albums, musicals, and hit films followed, including Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, and The Meaning of Life. Despite the success of 1975's Holy Grail, Life of Brian almost never came to be, with funding issues befalling the project. That's when The Beatles star George Harrison came in, with the musician giving the group around $4.5 million (£3.3M) to make the film a reality. 'For a while, we had no money. Lew Grade read it and just went nuts. He said, we can't possibly make this. I went to America to find money,' Idle told Big Issue, The Standard reported. 'I had been talking to George Harrison, who was a huge fan, and he said, 'I'll phone you in the morning, don't worry.' And I thought, well, nobody's got $4.5million (£3.3m).' But when everybody had turned them down, Harrison called Idle to let him know he had obtained the money for them. 'He had mortgaged his house and his business and raised the cash and put it all on a Python film. The most extraordinary thing to do,' he continued. It's not the first hurdle that Life of Brian faced, a film which follows the titular Brian, who just so happens to be born in a stable on the same night as Jesus Christ. It was immediately labelled blasphemous, both for its portrayal of Christianity as well as its shocking final scenes, which see Brian crucified, something many said 'mocked Jesus' suffering'. It was banned in Norway and Ireland, and screenings were stopped in some parts of the UK. Life of Brian continues to cause controversy due to its themes today, as well as transgender jokes that have become subject to furious debates. Idle's comments come after he revealed he went to hospital 'twice in three days' last month after an unexpected health scare. More Trending He wrote on X: 'I'd like to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff in the Cedars GI ward for their kindness and help to me today. The second time in three days.' Eric is currently based in Los Angeles, California, and he thanked the hospital staff at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre before revealing the extent of his current health problems. 'I think I'm suffering from gastroenteritis,' he tweeted, before signing off with a message for his fans who were worried about him: 'I love you people.' Monty Python star, 82, rushed to hospital after unexpected health scare
A legendary star of the Monty Python comedy troupe has revealed he was taken to hospital twice in the space of 72 hours. Eric Idle, 82, rose to prominence in the 1970s after joining the Python group co-creating the sketch series Flying Circus, which ran between 1969 and 1974. Through the late 70s and early 80s, Eric – along with John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin – starred in films such as The Holy Grail, Life of Brian, and The Meaning of Life. Such an esteemed collection made legends of the big and small screens, while a song Eric wrote for Life of Brian's soundtrack – Always Look On the Bright Side of Life – became an international hit. Relations between the old Python friends haven't been the best in recent years, but fans still adore each key member and look out for them individually. Which is why Eric worried fans this week after he revealed he'd been rushed to hospital two times in three days after a sudden and unexpected health scare. He wrote on X: 'I'd like to thank all the doctors nurses and staff in the Cedars GI ward for their kindness and help to me today. The second time in three days.' Eric is currently based in Los Angeles, California, and he thanked the hospital staff at the Cedars-Sinai medical centre before revealing the extent of his current health problems. 'I think I'm suffering from gastroenteritis,' he tweeted, before signing off with a message for his fans who were worried about him: 'I love you people.' Gastroenteritis is a common inflammatory condition and is often caused by a virus, but the symptoms can be nasty and difficult to deal with. Vomiting (projectile) and diarrhea are usually the telltale signs, but patients can sometimes struggle with a high temperature and disorientation as well. @SolitaryWasp sent good wishes to Eric, saying: 'Wishing all good things for you. You've brought me many smiles!' @AmyGravino reached out and said: 'We love you too, Eric! I was just in L.A. this weekend and thought of you. Please take good care of yourself and get better soon.' @JoeLeydon reminded the Monty Python comic: 'Please take care of yourself. The world would be a less amusing place without you.' More Trending Last year, Eric joked – in typically dry fashion – that he probably 'shouldn't be alive' after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2019, which left him needing surgery. 'I'm lucky and I enjoy every moment.' He added: '[I once worked on a] project called Death: The Musical and I asked my doctor which type of cancer I could use to finish off one of my characters. 'He said, 'Pancreatic cancer, it can finish people off in three weeks'. [10 years later] my doctor told me I had pancreatic cancer and I burst out laughing because I thought he must be joking.' Dr Tony Holohan recruited his son Ronan for best man duties as the former Chief Medical Officer married his partner Ciara Cronin over the weekend. Pic: Justin Farrelly Emer, who Tony met when he was just 19 years old, died following a cancer battle during the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking to the Irish Independent following the nuptials, Dr Holohan said his wedding to Ciara was 'beautiful from start to finish.' The couple were surrounded by their nearest and dearest, with the doctor's son, Ronan, standing as best man as they tied the knot at the National Maritime Museum in Dun Laoghaoire. The bride went for a non-traditional floral skirt which went just past the knees while the groom went for a navy suit and tie combination. Dr Holohan also told the publication that he and his new wife were heading to France 'for a few weeks of rest and time together.' In October 2023, Dr Holohan opened up on his blossoming relationship with Ciara as he spoke on an episode of The Meaning of Life which aired on RTÉ One. 'I have met somebody new,' he revealed, 'I have a new partner for the last number of months in my life, which is wonderful.' Asked if he was nervous about the new relationship, he admitted it was a 'significant thing to find the basis for moving on' but Ciara had made it easier. He added that meeting another family for just the second time in his life was 'kind of strange and lovely all at the same time.'
