‘Kareena Kapoor is on the same diet since 2007,' reveals dietician Rujuta Diwekar: ‘She has the same dinner four-five times a week'

Kareena Kapoor has piqued the curiosity of her fans for her diet over almost two decades now. Ever since she debuted her 'size zero' figure in Vijay Krishna Acharya's 2008 film Tashan, she's had quite a fitness journey. From becoming mother to two sons to now entering her 40s, she's maintained a healthy lifestyle. Now, her longtime dietician Rujuta Diwekar has revealed that Kareena has been following the same diet, more or less, for 18 years now. Rujuta began working with Kareena while the latter was prepping for Tashan. The dietician even credits Kareena for getting the opportunity to write her first book in 2009 — Don't Lose Your Mind, Lose Your Weight. That's pretty much been Kareena's diet mantra since then too. In an interview with The Lallantop, Diwekar reveals the breakdown of the actor's diet — 'Dry fruits like almonds, raisins or figs as soon as she wakes up; paratha or poha for breakfast; dal and rice for lunch; cheese toast (sometimes) or mango/mango milkshake (seasonal) for evening snack; and khichdi with ghee/pulao for dinner.' Diwekar pointed out that if Kareena is on set, she usually prefers rice and dal for lunch because rice is more accessible there. Otherwise if at home, she has roti-sabzi for lunch. Diwekar also said that Kareena prefers to have khichdi with ghee for four to five days a week. Kareena also confirmed the same as the special guest at the launch of Diwekar's new book Mitahara: Food Wisdom From My Indian Kitchen earlier this year. 'My cook is exhausted because I make him make the same food for 10-15 days. Same dal-rice, dahi (curd)-rice. He is like, what am I cooking? But I can be really happy eating khichdi five times a week. It works. It keeps me happy with a dollop of ghee,' said the actor. But she also added that she finishes dinner by 6:30 pm and goes to sleep by 9:30 pm everyday. 'Dinner by 6 pm, lights out by 9:30 pm, morning workouts before the world wakes up,' Kareena said in an interview with The Nod. She added that her friends expect her not to show up for late-night parties and respect her for the same. She prefers spending her last hour watching the Emmy Award-winning show Schitt's Creek on low volume at home. Kareena claimed that the most 'joyfully ridiculous rumour' she heard about herself is that she eats quinoa and air to maintain her figure. In a conversation with Vicky Kaushal on The Hollywood Reporter India, Kareena confessed their mutual Punjabi love for parathas and claimed she used to have parathas for breakfast even during her size zero training for Tashan in 2007. But she told herself that she has to grow to be comfortable in her skin again.

Kareena Kapoor Khan reveals her ‘almost monastic' daily routine: ‘Dinner by 6 pm, lights out by…'

For Kareena Kapoor Khan, a good Indian meal every day is non-negotiable. Other things on that list include sleep and fitness routine, which she has carefully tweaked and tuned to suit her needs. Her routine at 44, she admits, is 'almost monastic'. 'Dinner by 6 pm, lights out by 9:30 pm, morning workouts before the world wakes up,' she said in an interview. 'My friends know not to expect me at parties. And they respect that. They know I'll be watching Schitt's Creek on low volume!' Khan added. According to her, the Covid-19 pandemic changed something in her. 'If I don't work out, I'm in a bad mood. Post-covid, I realised how important fitness is—not for vanity, but for well-being. It's my mood stabiliser, my anchor,' Khan, who is often seen doing yoga, strength training, or taking a walk, told The Nod magazine. Taking a cue from her revelation, let's learn how early dinners can benefit your metabolism and overall health. Eating dinner earlier in the evening, around 6:30 pm, can have several positive effects on metabolism and overall health, particularly for individuals aged 44-45, said Dr Aarti Ullal, physician and diabetologist, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai. 'Firstly, having an early dinner allows more time for digestion before bedtime. This can improve gastrointestinal function, reduce the risk of acid reflux, and promote more restful sleep. A well-rested body is essential for metabolic health, as sleep is linked to hormone regulation, including those that control hunger and appetite,' said Dr Ullal. It can also help stabilise blood sugar levels. 'When dinner is timed appropriately, it allows the body to use glucose more efficiently, reducing the risk of insulin resistance, a common concern as we age. Lowered insulin levels can aid in weight management and decrease the risk of chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes,' said Dr Ullal. Eating earlier can also encourage healthier food choices. 'When we eat late, there is a tendency to opt for quick, often less nutritious options. With an earlier dinner, individuals can prepare balanced meals, incorporating whole foods rich in nutrients, which are important for maintaining muscle mass and energy levels during middle age,' said Dr Ullal. Lastly, social and family routines can benefit from this practice, allowing more time to unwind after dinner and engage in physical activity, whether it's a post-meal walk or preparing for bed.
