'Hema Malini Zeenat Aman Ban Jaye Toh Kaun Accept Karega': Why Yash Chopra DROPPED Film On Plastic Surgery

Poonam Dhillon shares how Yash Chopra rejected her film idea inspired by The Promise. Actor Poonam Dhillon recently opened up about an old conversation with late filmmaker Yash Chopra that stayed with her for years. While returning from Japan, she was really taken by the plot of Danielle Steel's novel The Promise and believed it had the potential to become a great Hindi film. She approached Yash Chopra with the idea and shared the story with him. 'I told Yashji. I said, 'Yashji, ek bohot achchi kahani maini padhi hai. I think it's a lovely story'. He said, 'I don't read books, you give it to Pam, she'll read it and tell me'. So I said, 'Okay'. Yeah, so Pam ji read it probably again in a day. It was a very fast read. And she gave him the narration of the subject. And I was very excited waiting for his reaction. So I said, Yash ji, you read it, Pam ji told you." But Yash Chopra wasn't convinced. 'He said, 'Yes, yes. But this film, our Hindi audience won't accept it'. I said, 'Why Yash ji, it's such a good story, you know, romantic story, everything'," Poonam said. The director pointed out what he believed was a major issue with the story. 'He said, acha ek baat bata. Hema Malini Zeenat Aman ban jaae, kon accept karega?" she recalled. 'He finished my dream there and then, and the story was over. Yash Chopra toh nahi banane waale the." Though Yash Chopra didn't pursue the idea, the story was eventually made into a film titled Yeh Vaada Raha in 1982, directed by Kapil Kapoor. When Poonam was offered the project, she immediately agreed. But despite her excitement, the film struggled at the box office. Reflecting on the outcome, she admitted that Chopra had a point. 'And sure, it proved right enough. At that time, plastic surgery wasn't something people would accept so easily. And that whole face has changed, and the same person is etc. So, it didn't work well at that time," she said. First Published:

‘Who'll accept if Hema Malini becomes Zeenat Aman': Yash Chopra rejected Poonam Dhillon's pitch for Yeh Vaada Raha story

Actor Poonam Dhillon recalled late filmmaker Yash Chopra's reaction when she once pitched him a film idea based on Daniel Steele's The Promise. It was later directed by Kapil Kapoor and was titled Yeh Vaada Raha (1982). Speaking with news agency ANI, Poonam revealed that he rejected the film saying that the Indian audience won't accept Hema Malini becoming Zeenat Aman. As per the plot of the story, the lead female actors changed after a cosmetic surgery. Yash Chopra didn't like Poonam Dhillon's pitch for Yeh Vaada Raha story. Poonam recalled reading the book during her trip to Japan. After returning to India she told Yash Chopra about the plot. "I told Yashji. I said, 'Yashji, ek bohot achchi kahani maini padhi hai (I have read a good story). So I said, Yash ji, you read it, Pam ji told you. He said, 'Yes, yes. But this film, our Hindi audience won't accept it'. I said, 'Why Yash ji, it's such a good story, you know, romantic story, everything'," said Poonam. As per Yash, there was a flaw in the story, which, according to him, renders it unsuitable for the Hindi audience. "He said, acha ek baat bta. Hema Malini Zeenat Aman ban jaae, kon accept karega (Tell me one thing. If Hema Malini becomes Zeenat Aman, who will accept)?' He finished my dream there and then, and the story was over. Yash Chopra toh nhi banane waale the (Chopra was not going to make it)," said Poonam. Poonam later realised Yash Chopra was right about audience's reaction Years later, Poonam was pitched a similar story by the makers of Yeh Vaada Raha, which she immediately accepted. However, after the film's struggling performance at the box office, Poonam recalled Yash's feedback on the story. "And sure, it proved right enough. At that time, plastic surgery wasn't something people would accept so easily. And that whole face has changed, and the same person is etc. So, it didn't work well at that time," she added. About Yeh Vaada Raha Yeh Vaada Raha also starred Rishi Kapoor, Tina, Rakhee and Shammi Kapoor. It was the first Hindi film where the lead female character is portrayed by two actors (Poonam and Tina) through the use of plastic surgery.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Poonam Dhillon was launched in the Bollywood industry by Yash Chopra with the star-studded film 'Trishul' in 1978. Renowned actors of that time, Amitabh Bachchan, Sashi Kapoor and played the lead roles in the movie. In an interview with ANI, Poonam Dhillon recalled the time when she pitched a story for a movie to Yash Chopra, which the director rejected, saying that it wouldn't be "accepted" by the Hindi movie audience. The movie was later made as 'Yeh Vaada Raha' in 1982. Although the film didn't perform well at the box office, it is still considered one of the iconic films of Bollywood. "The audience still feels that the subject of Yeh Wada Raha is iconic. That time it wasn't accepted. Because I remember reading that book. I think I was going to Japan, and I picked that book up at the airport. It was a book by Daniel Steele called The Promise," said Dhillon. 'The Promise' story impressed Dhillon to the extent that she couldn't stop herself from pitching it to Yash Chopra. "So when I came back, I told Yashji. I said, Yashji, ek bohot achchi kahmaini padhi hai (I have read a good story). I think it's a lovely story. He said, I don't read books, you give it to Pam, she'll read it and tell me. Yash Chopra identified a significant flaw in the story, which, according to him, renders it unsuitable for the Hindi audience. "He said, acha ek baat bta. Hema Malini Zeenat Aman ban jaae, kon accept karega (Tell me one thing. If Hema Malini becomes Zeenat Aman, who will accept?). He finished my dream there and then, and the story was over. Yash Chopra toh nhi banane waale the. (Chopra was not going to make it)," said Dhillon. Unexpectedly, years later, Dhillon was pitched a similar story by the makers of 'Yeh Vaada Raha', which was immediately accepted by the actress. "After five-seven years later, when the subject was offered to me, when they were narrating it to me, I said, this is 'The Promise'. He said, yeah, it's based on that. I said, you know, I've always loved that subject, and I wanted it to be made," said Dhillon. After the film's struggling performance at the Box office, Dhillon recalled Yash Chopra's feedback on the story. "And sure, it proved right enough. At that time, plastic surgery wasn't something people would accept so easily. And that whole face has changed, and the same person is etc. So, it didn't work well at that time," added Dhillon. Holyrood committee calls for views on care experience legislation

A Holyrood committee has called for views on Scottish Government legislation aimed at providing more support for care-experienced young people. In 2020, the Scottish Government enshrined the findings of an independent review of care in what has since become known as The Promise – pledging to improve lives for those who spent time in care in childhood by 2030. Currently, aftercare – which includes help with education, housing and employment – is only afforded up to the age of 18 for those in care. But as part of fulfilling that pledge, the Government has proposed legislation which would provide such services until the age of 26, as well as lifelong advocacy services. As well as changes to services offered to care-experienced people, the legislation would create a national register of foster carers and put limits on the profits that can be made from the care of children. On Friday, Holyrood's Education, Children and Young People Committee launched a call for views, including those with care experience, on the legislation. 'In 2020, the Independent Care Review set out a series of promises to Scotland's care-experienced children and young people,' said the committee convener, Douglas Ross. 'We have kept a constant eye on progress towards meeting those promises and it is clear, from hearing from care-experienced young people and those supporting them, that there are many challenges still to overcome. 'The committee will look closely at this Bill, listen to the views of everyone affected by it, and assess whether it will bring about the changes needed to ensure that all care-experienced children and young people can enjoy the childhood they deserve. 'If you are care-experienced, or work to support care-experienced children and young people, please share your views on the proposals in this Bill.' The consultation will close on August 15, with the committee due to start evidence sessions when Holyrood returns from recess.
