Supreme Court Lets Trump Resume Mass Federal Layoffs

The Supreme Court has ruled that the Trump administration can resume mass firing of staff at federal agencies. On Tuesday, the court lifted an order from a lower court blocking the enforcement of a February executive order in which President Donald Trump laid out plans for large scale firings and layoffs across the government. The court ruled 7-2 to lift the order, with liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor joining conservatives in siding with the administration In her concurrence with the majority, Sotomayor wrote that while 'the President cannot restructure federal agencies in a manner inconsistent with congressional mandates,' the 'relevant Executive Order directs agencies to plan reorganizations and reductions in force 'consistent with applicable law.'' Since the legality of the specific plans and methods were not directly before the court, the executive order was, in her view, within the powers of the president. Fellow liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote in a scathing dissent that the order — and plans outlined by the Trump administration — potentially usurped powers vested in Congress. The lower court had stayed the layoffs in order while it litigated the legal merits of the case, but, as Jackson wrote, 'that temporary, practical, harm-reducing preservation of the status quo was no match for this Court's demonstrated enthusiasm for greenlighting this President's legally dubious actions in an emergency posture.' 'This Court lacks the capacity to fully evaluate, much less responsibly override, reasoned lower court fact finding about what this challenged executive action actually entails,' Jackson added. The decision is a victory for the Trump administration, whose efforts to gut the federal workforce and dismantle entire agencies has repeatedly been stymied by legal challenges and court rulings. When U.S. District Judge Susan Illston issued the preliminary injunction against Trump's February executive order, she stopped removals at over 20 agencies. The Trump administration has gambled that it can litigate many of its more extreme, constitutionally dubious initiatives through the courts and come out on top. Once again, the Supreme Court has proven him correct. Trump Voter Andrew Schulz Can't Believe Trump Isn't Doing What He Campaigned On

Andrew Schulz, the controversial comedian and podcaster who proudly voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 election, has apparently been shocked to learn that Donald Trump is not doing the things he promised to do. As if there weren't a bounty of evidence out there already that this exactly what was going to happen. On a recent episode of his Flagrant podcast, Schulz grumbled, 'Everything he campaigned on I believe he wanted to do, and now he's doing the exact opposite thing of every single fucking thing.' (Who could have possibly seen that coming?) Schulz went on to say that he's been receiving DMs from people telling him, 'You voted for this.' Schulz, though, insists he 'voted for none of this,' even though he actively voted for Trump, an extremely well-known political quantity at this point with a habit of saying things that will get him elected, but not actually doing them. 'He's doing the exact opposite of everything I voted for,' Schulz complained. 'I want him to stop the wars — he's funding them. I want him to shrink spending, reduce the budget — he's increasing it. It's like everything that he said he's going to do — except sending immigrants back, and now he's even flip-flopped on that, which I kind of like.' (Again, who could have possibly seen all that coming?) Chief among Schulz's problems — and the main focus of the episode on which he aired these grievances — was Trump's flip-flop on his promise to release more info about Jeffrey Epstein. Earlier this week, Justice Department officials released a memo saying investigators had concluded that Epstein never had a 'client list' used to blackmail celebrities and political elites, inflaming certain MAGA factions who've been clamoring for more documents. On top of all that, when asked about the Epstein case at a recent press conference, Trump dismissed the notion that people are still interested in the case. After playing that press conference clip on Flagrant, Schulz gravely said, 'In all seriousness, that is what is enraging people right now. It's insulting our intelligence.' Yup, congrats, Andrew, you've finally figured out how Trump operates and how he perceives even some of his most slavish and devoted followers. So, once more with feeling: Who could have possibly seen that coming? Speaker Mike Johnson Splits From Trump, Calls for Release of Epstein Files

House Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republicans broke with the Trump administration's decision to keep the lid shut on the government's files investigating convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Johnson called on the Department of Justice to release documents and information related to the probe into the disgraced financier, who was found dead in his jail cell in 2019, and said that Attorney General Pam Bondi needs to explain previous remarks she made on the issue. This is the first time Johnson, a close Trump ally, has spoken so publicly in opposition to the president. In an interview today with conservative commentator Benny Johnson, the Louisiana Republican was asked about the matter and said, 'I'm for transparency.' Johnson added, 'Look, [former President] Reagan used tell us, we should trust the American people, and I believe in that principle, and I know President Trump does as well. I trust him. I mean, he put together a team of his choosing, and they're doing a great job. It's a very delicate subject, but we should put everything out there and let the people decide it.' Johnson also told the podcast host that Bondi needs to clarify her statement earlier this year when she said on Fox News that an Epstein client list was 'sitting on my desk right now for review.' Bondi later claimed she was referencing the files in a more general manner. 'I think she was talking about documents, as I understood, that were on her desk,' he said. 'I don't know that she was specific about a list or whatever, but she needs to come forward and explain that to everybody.' Last week, the Justice Department announced in a memo that it is closing the investigation into Epstein, that Epstein died by suicide, and there is no 'incriminating' client list of people who potentially participated in Epstein's sex trafficking ring that merits further inquiry. The memo has caused a simmering revolt within the MAGA media universe and contradicts preaching from prominent figures within the Trump administration — including Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel — about the need to bring justice to victims. Judge Orders Trump to Return National Guard Control to Newsom

A federal judge has ordered President Donald Trump to return control of the California National Guard to Gov. Gavin Newsom. The Trump administration is expected to appeal the order, which takes effect Friday at noon Pacific time. On June 6, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids targeted warehouses, clothing manufacturers, and Home Depot parking lots across Los Angeles, prompting a wave of local protests. Trump seized the opportunity to exert control over the state, deploying 2,000 National Guard troops into the city despite protests from both Mayor Karen Bass and California Gov. Gavin Newsom. In his evaluation of California's request for a temporary restraining order against the federal government, Judge Charles Breyer of the Federal District Court in San Francisco determined Trump did not follow the 'congressionally mandated procedure for his actions.' 'His actions were illegal—both exceeding the scope of his statutory authority and violating the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution,' wrote Breyer in his order Thursday. 'He must therefore return control of the California National Guard to the Governor of the State of California forthwith.' The news of the ruling was announced on the same day Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) was dragged out of a Department of Homeland Security press conference, forced to the ground, and handcuffed by members of the FBI after attempting to ask DHS Secretary Kristi Noem a question. Padilla said in a press conference outside the building that he was 'there peacefully' and was hoping to get answers from the administration about their immigration policies. 'I began to ask a question,' the senator recalled, delivering his remarks both English and Spanish. 'I was forced to the ground and I was handcuffed,' he said, clarifying: 'I was not arrested. I was not detained.' Padilla then directly addressed reporters: 'If this is how this administration responds to a senator with a question you can only imagine what they're doing do farmers… and day laborers.' Earlier this week, Newsom called out Trump's 'theatrical display of toughness' and said the president has 'crossed a red line in this country.' When speaking with Pod Save America, the California governor responded to threats of arrest by the president and his administration, while also lambasting Trump for inciting chaos, using valuable resources, and militarizing city from Rolling Stone Trump 'Doesn't Speak With Precision,' Justice Department Tells Judge California Senator Handcuffed, Manhandled at Kristi Noem Press Conference Hamas Attacks Aid Group, Challenging Israel's Gaza Plan Best of Rolling Stone The Useful Idiots New Guide to the Most Stoned Moments of the 2020 Presidential Campaign Anatomy of a Fake News Scandal The Radical Crusade of Mike Pence

Gavin Newsom Slams Trump's ‘Weakness' After Arrest Threat

As President Donald Trump mobilizes another 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles amid anti-Immigrations and Customs Enforcements (ICE) protests in Los Angeles, California Governor Gavin Newsom called out Trump's 'theatrical display of toughness' and said the president has 'crossed a red line in this country.' In a severe escalation of federal involvement, Trump signed an order on Saturday authorizing the deployment of National Guard troops, 300 of which were sent to L.A. without the request or consent of city and state officials. The National Guard was last activated without a governor's permission in 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson bypassed Alabama's segregationist Governor George Wallace and sent the troops to protect civil rights protesters marching from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. When speaking with Pod Saves America on Monday, Newsom responded to threats of arrest by the president and his administration, while also lambasting Trump for inciting chaos, using valuable resources, and militarizing city streets. On Monday, border czar Tom Homan said that there was currently 'no discussion' about arresting the governor, but didn't rule out the idea. When asked if Homan should arrest Gavin, Trump replied: 'I would do it if I were Tom. I think it's great. Gavin likes the publicity, but I think it would be a great thing. He's done a terrible job.' Gavin shot back at Trump's remarks during the podcast interview, saying, 'I never, ever imagined the President of the United States of America ever saying that about a political opponent.' Remaining defiant, the governor said, 'Can we just get it over with?' He added, 'They're just weakness masquerading as strength. They're cosplay.' Gavin warned that Trump was taking National Guard members 'off assignments on forest management, protecting vulnerable communities against summer and wildfire season' and was 'removing them from task forces that we've created to deal with fentanyl interdiction.' The governor called Trump's order a 'theatrical display of toughness by a president of United States who's unhinged that has now crossed a red line in this country.' 'We need peaceful protests, but we've got elements now coming in that are intentionally trying to create chaos and putting people in harm's way, and it's my biggest fear when we start to militarize our streets and they know this,' Gavin continued. 'Trump knows this. It's what he wants. He wants that engagement, and he wants that friction. And I just pray that we can keep people safe and that people are thoughtful as they peacefully protest.'
