Glasgow stars in first trailer for new Hollywood blockbuster
The trailer for the much-anticipated reboot of action-packed sci-fi film 'The Running Man' - which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger - has been released. 'Top Gun: Maverick' and 'Twisters' star Glen Powell leads the cast of the reboot, taking on the role played by Schwarzenegger in the 1987 movie, alongside Josh Brolin, Michael Cera and Colman Domingo. Based on Stephen King's 1982 novel of the same name, 'The Running Man' (1987) centres on Ben Richards, a falsely convicted policeman in dystopian America who gets his shot at freedom when he must forcibly participate in a TV game show where convicts must battle killers for their freedom. Speaking about the reboot in December 2023, director Edgar Wright, the English filmmaker behind 'Hot Fuzz', 'Baby Driver' and 'Shaun of the Dead', explained that the reboot would not necessarily be a remake of the 1987 movie, but a more faithful adaptation of Stephen King's novel. The 1987 movie, which was a moderate box office success in the United States, is now considered something of a cult classic. The Running Man is set to be released by Paramount on November 21, 2025.

Glasgow landmarks and streets feature prominently in the trailer for Edgar Wright's remake of The Running Man. Areas of the city centre were shut down in November to shoot the highly anticipated reimagining of 1987 cult classic, with camera crews and rusty cars, and dystopian sets deployed on locations including Hope Street, Renfrew Street and St Vincent Street. The trailer, which was released on Tuesday, features several Glasgow spots, including Union Place lane near Glasgow Central Station, the SEC Armadillo, the OVO Hydro, and the Alea Casino. Eugene Strange, location manager for the film, previously described how Glasgow was the 'best place' to shoot the Hollywood blockbuster due to the variety of architecture. He said: 'We looked at many cities across the UK to double for American cities, but Glasgow is by far and away the best place to double. STV News Glasgow has been made to appear as 'New York, Boston and Detroit'. STV News Glen Powell is the star of the 1987 remake. 'It has a variety of architecture, modern, classical and brutalist. We've used all three of those styles making Glasgow appear as New York, Boston and maybe Detroit.' Glasgow is to double as a futuristic New York for the movie, which also stars Samuel L Jackson, Emma Mackey, and Jenna Ortega.
