Jon Scheyer Sends Strong Message About Cooper Flagg Ahead of NBA Draft
Jon Scheyer Sends Strong Message About Cooper Flagg Ahead of NBA Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With the NBA draft set for June 25 and 26, the countdown is officially on until former Duke Blue Devils star Cooper Flagg hears his name called as the No. 1 overall pick by the Dallas Mavericks. Advertisement Ahead of the big night, Duke head coach Jon Scheyer joined "The Ryen Russillo Podcast" to discuss Flagg's mindset and the potential of how he might fit at the next level—particularly on a team already loaded with proven star veterans like Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, and Anthony Davis. 'Cooper had as good and as special of a season as I've ever been a part of with any player," Scheyer said. "But he also had moments where things didn't go his way—when we lost, when there was heartbreak. And in those moments, there were no excuses, no finger-pointing. It was always, 'What does Cooper need to do better?' That's pretty old school, pretty special, and it's a big reason why he's going to be the No. 1 pick and why he'll be a great player for a very long time.' Scheyer continued, 'He's so unselfish—that's just his nature. He could've easily averaged 20-plus points this year. Going forward, I think he'll be just fine With his ability to shoot from three, finish at the rim, and create his own shot, I think he's going to become one of the best scorers in the NBA over time.' Duke Blue Devils forward Cooper Flagg and head coach Jon Scheyer© Robert Deutsch-Imagn Images Cooper Flagg was widely projected to be the No. 1 overall pick before he even stepped on the court at Duke—and somehow, he still managed to exceed the sky-high expectations that followed him from Newport, Maine, to Montverde Academy, where he was the top recruit in the Class of 2024. Flagg led the Blue Devils to both the ACC regular season and conference tournament titles, a Final Four appearance, and topped the team in nearly every major statistical category. His dominant season earned him a sweep of the sport's top honors, including the Wooden Award, Naismith Player of the Year, and both ACC Player and Rookie of the Year. Bill Belichick's leaked email sparks new buzz over Tom Brady's 2020 Patriots departure
A leaked email from Bill Belichick has reignited the debate surrounding Tom Brady's 2020 Patriots exit (Getty Images) Analysts see email as proof of long-standing power struggle between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick Steph Curry Did Everything in Game 7 Against the Rockets | The Bill Simmons Podcast A recently leaked email from Bill Belichick has stirred fresh speculation about the real reasons behind Tom Brady's departure from the New England Patriots in 2020. The email, shared publicly by Belichick's partner Jordon Hudson, includes remarks that have fueled the long-standing debate about who deserved more credit for the Patriots' two-decade dynasty Brady or the email, Bill Belichick highlights his role in increasing the value of the Patriots franchise, with little mention of Brady's has been seen by many, including sports analyst Bill Simmons, as subtle but telling evidence of Belichick's mindset during the final years of their partnership. Simmons and others interpret the tone as reflective of a deeper, long-running power struggle between the two football email, which was never intended for public release, revealed a more candid side of Bill Belichick. In the message, he expressed frustration with how the media was covering his book, hinting that the publicity though not entirely welcome might serve a promotional purpose. He wrote, "I don't think this is fantastic, but it probably will hype the book, which is clearly the ongoing theme here."On a recent episode of The Ryen Russillo Podcast, Simmons shared his frustration. "It was never just about football," he said. "It was about who deserved the credit."Tension between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick had been brewing long before Brady's 2020 departure. As early as 2018, ESPN's Seth Wickersham reported on a widening rift between the quarterback and coach. At the center of it was backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo Belichick's preferred successor to Brady. Concerned about his future, Brady reportedly pushed back, worried about being replaced. Under pressure from team owner Robert Kraft, Belichick eventually relented and traded Garoppolo to the closed doors, the situation was far from smooth. Brady allegedly refused to mentor Garoppolo, and Belichick, in turn, resisted offering Brady a long-term contract extension. According to Wickersham, the tension reached its peak during a private meeting in October of that year, one that ultimately led to Garoppolo's forward to the present, and the recently leaked email from Belichick seems to echo unresolved frustration. The message, initially private, now sounds like the reflections of a man still unsettled by how things unfolded. And when Brady lifted the Lombardi Trophy with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021, the silence from Foxborough only grew more Simmons, long-time Patriots fan and sports commentator, interprets the email as a candid admission of what's long been suspected. As he put it, "When Brady won that title without Belichick, it changed the narrative. And yeah, that stung."Also Read: Tom Brady Net Worth in 2025: How the NFL legend is building his fortune after retirement The leaked email adds another layer to the story, shedding light on the complex and often guarded relationship between two of football's greatest minds. Ultimately, it suggests that ego, legacy, and differing visions for the future may have played as much a role in their split as any on-field decision.

NFL insider: 'It's contentious' within the New York Giants' draft room
NFL insider: 'It's contentious' within the New York Giants' draft room Have the New York Giants closed the door on selecting Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders at No. 3 overall in the 2025 NFL draft, or is a last-minute private workout suggestive of something else? It's an interesting dynamic any way you slice it, and it's left some NFL executives and draft analysts to speculate. Long-time NFL insider and commentator, Todd McShay, spoke to a rival general manager this week and learned that the Giants may be split on Sanders -- some want him at No. 3 overall, while others feel that would be an overdraft. "It's a little bit contentious inside the Giants' draft room," McShay said on The Ryen Russillo Podcast. "There are some people that are pushing hard for Shedeur." How another general manager would come about that information is not something McShay elaborated on, but he did hint that some of friction may be coming from the top of the organization down. "I also wonder, too, at this point in time with ownership -- we hear a lot of stories after the fact of ownership getting involved when it comes to the quarterback position and drafting that high," McShay said. "So, that part is fascinating." The Giants will select a quarterback at some point during the draft, but Sanders at No. 3 feels too rich for the team's blood. Head coach Brian Daboll is likely leading the charge for him more than John Mara or Steve Tisch, while general manager Joe Schoen is likely leaning toward an impact player like Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter. Who wins out? We'll know in a little over a week when NFL commissioner Roger Goodell takes the podium in Green Bay.
