It may sound like a plot from a sci-fi novel, but according to top experts and Silicon Valley bigwigs, immortality might be within our grasp - and it could become reality within our lifetimes, as per A surge of pioneering advancements in medicine, AI, and genetic engineering has ignited audacious forecasts from leading futurists. From transferring your consciousness into a robotic body to evolving into a hybrid of human and machine, the quest to outwit death is intensifying - and some boffins suggest that the first immortal human might already be among us. In California's Silicon Valley, where wealth is amassed and norms are redefined, tycoons obsessed with longevity are investing billions into life-extending science. Entrepreneur Bryan Johnson has emerged as a figurehead for this movement, adhering to a strict regimen known as 'Blueprint' in his pursuit to reverse ageing. Meanwhile, Altos Labs, supported by wealthy backers, is trialling therapies that have already prolonged the lives of mice - with humans potentially up next. But it's not just the super-rich paying attention. Some of the globe's most esteemed visionaries predict we're merely years away from unlocking the secret to human immortality, reports the Express. Dr Ian Pearson, a respected futurologist, posits that by 2050, celebrities and the well-heeled could attain immortality through cutting-edge technology. "By 2050, it will only really be for the rich and famous," reasoned Pearson, pointing out that while these tech marvels may start with hefty price tags, they should be more budget-friendly for the average Joe by the 2060s. Pearson envisions a not-so-distant future devoid of deadly diseases, courtesy of medical science advancements, with humans potentially opting for android casings or even going full-blown digital in their existence. "This would allow people to have multiple existences and identities, or to carry on living long after their biological death," he mused. Despite the likely early uptake by those flush with cash, Pearson harbours optimism that eternal life won't just be a plaything for the wealthy. "[A]nyone under the age of 50 has got a good chance of affording this in their lifetime, and anyone under 40 will almost definitely will have access to immortality." This brave new world is predicated on burgeoning technologies like three-dimensional organ printing, CRISPR gene editing, and AI-led health checks, all anticipated to leapfrog in sophistication as time marches on. Ray Kurzweil, a renowned sage of the future and erstwhile Google boffin, conjectures that by 2029, artificial intelligence will rub shoulders with human smarts, propelling us into a fantastical era where flesh and silicon coalesce. According to him, this landmark will mark the pathway toward 'The Singularity' by 2045 – the point at which eternal existence becomes our new reality. According to Kurzweil's 2024 book, The Singularity Is Nearer, a crucial development in the 2030s will be the integration of the upper echelons of human brains with the cloud, thereby broadening cognitive capabilities. Kurzweil forecasts that AI will render life's necessities, such as sustenance and shelter, virtually costless and that humans will have the ability to upload their consciousness or inhabit bodies produced by 3D printing. "Rather than AI being a competitor, it will become an extension of ourselves," he elaborated. The trajectory towards this future begins in merely four years, when Kurzweil predicts that AI will achieve parity with human intelligence - setting the stage for a time when eternal life is no longer a fantasy, but rather a digital enhancement. For Aubrey de Grey, an Oxford-educated scientist and biomedical researcher with a signature long beard, ageing is no longer a foregone conclusion - it is a disease that can be treated. Through his Longevity Escape Velocity Foundation, de Grey is pioneering treatments that target cellular regeneration, thereby opening the door to a potential human lifespan of over a thousand years. "Aging is a disease," de Grey posits, reasoning that it should be approached similarly to cancer or diabetes. His therapeutic strategy, known as integrative rejuvenation, attacks ageing at its core by rectifying DNA damage, removing cellular waste, and revitalising youthful functionality within tissues. De Grey is joined by proponents such as Dr Andrew Steele, author of Ageless, who endorses treatments like senolytics, which specifically combat rogue 'zombie cells' within the body. "We're at a point where we understand enough about the process that we can start to try to intervene," Steele remarked. By 2050, de Grey is convinced that ageing could be a thing of the past – potentially eradicating death from natural causes altogether. He's boldly proclaimed that the first individual to celebrate their millennium birthday has already entered the world. As concepts like mind uploading, AI integration, and cellular regeneration advance, what was once deemed science fiction edges closer to reality. But when he was writing his rock concept album, 'The Singularity,' in 2023, he said, he knew he'd want to perform his own music live. 'I looked in the mirror and thought – am I going to be Keyboard Guy at my own rock show?' Enter Email Sign Up In the end, he had been studying guitar for less than a year when he played onstage beside his teenage musical idol, Guns n' Roses guitarist 'To this day, I would struggle to play 'Let it Be' on an acoustic guitar, but I can play my own rock riffs!' he said gleefully. 'I'm just always trying to learn new things.' As McCreary prepared to embark on the American leg of his 'Themes and Variations' tour with a seven-piece band, he spoke with the Globe about the musical friendships he's nurtured, reconnecting with his Armenian roots, and teaching himself the accordion at age 19. Advertisement Q. On the Themes and Variations tour, what repertoire are you prioritizing to play live? A. Each of these people has played with me for years. Lead singer and acoustic guitar Brendan McCreary is my brother. I've been making music with him my entire life. Paul Cartwright, my violinist, played on the first episode of 'Battlestar Galactica'; he's played on every episode of 'Outlander' and 'Rings of Power;' he's integral to my sound. I'm bringing Gene Hoglan, who was the drummer on 'The Singularity.' Everybody has that kind of personal connection to me. So the repertoire is a mixture of some songs from 'The Singularity' with themes from my scoring career, reconfigured a little to translate to this rock ensemble. Many of my scores make that leap easily. Like, when we play the theme from 'The Walking Dead,' you're gonna hear Paul on violin playing that main title piece just like on the original recording, but then as it evolves we get to bring the band in and supercharge it. Being able to bring these melodies into an environment where you get to see those of us that actually created it on stage; there's something really special about that for me. It's epic and emotional, and potentially loud. Bring some earplugs. It's a rock show. Q. You mentioned you're part Armenian; did you know the Boston area has a huge Armenian community? A. As does Glendale, out here. When I first moved to southern California, I was walking around seeing women that looked like my grandmother, and I was surprised because I didn't know much about my Armenian heritage growing up in Bellingham, Washington. My great-grandmother, who escaped the genocide and came through Ellis Island with her babe in arms, had a very common experience to some Armenians. They really wanted to create new roots, so they didn't raise their children speaking Armenian. They wanted to be American. Advertisement It was through Armenian musician circles [in L.A.] that I met Serj Tankian [from hard rock band System of a Down], and my brother and I have become very close with him. I haven't yet returned to Armenia, but that's on the horizon. I've been working on a theater piece about my family's journey for the last 20 years, and it will be something I get to one of these days because it's a harrowing, incredible story. When social movements take hold that try to oppress people, one great way to [further those movements] is to make sure that movies and games and shows don't feature oppressed people. So I'm always on the lookout. I like being part of stories that I think are important. Q. What are you working on that tells those kinds of 'important stories?' A. This is going to sound silly, but when I started working on 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,' and there was a Black elf and a Black dwarf, I was like, 'People will see there's a diversity of people in Middle Earth.' I think that's cool. I also don't think it's a big deal – like, we're talking about fantasy! But I knew there'd be treatises online about why [having Black characters] is impossible. Advertisement To which I'm like – that's a silly thing to get mad about, but I was proud of everybody on the show, and those actors are phenomenal. The show's doing well, and I have felt I'm able to do my part when they come on screen. They're heroes; I'm going to give them a hero's fanfare. I am making it contextually clear who this character is to the audience. Q. What made you decide to learn the accordion? A. I took piano lessons when I was a kid; in high school, I loved getting my friends together and playing in bands. I hated being stuck behind the keyboard. I hated it! But I didn't play guitar. So the accordion…you can see where I'm going with this. I can move around! It's funny, because I got the accordion when I was 19, and I was down in the basement of my dorm in college practicing and learning it. People would come downstairs because they were annoyed, because it was echoing through the cement halls, but they'd be standing there. My hair wasn't as long as it was now, but I'd be thrashing my head around, and when I was done they'd say – often – 'you look like Slash!' And of course, I loved Slash's playing. I played accordion like I wanted to be Slash, which is funny because now I work with him. Q. Have you told him that story? A. You know what, I haven't. I should admit it. Imagine you turn 18 when artificial general intelligence (AGI) arrives. Already you felt the same vexing anxieties so many of your peers share. For years now, you've wondered what you should study—or if you should study at all. More and more you worry that AI will take all the good jobs, making you question just what to do with your adult life. And now? AGI is here—and shaking up the whole world. To appreciate the seismic change this breakthrough portends, let's review McKinsey & Company's definition of the term: 'AGI is AI with capabilities that rival those of a human.' This is the moment when we may approach The Singularity described this way by IBM: '… A theoretical scenario where technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, culminating in profound and unpredictable changes to human civilization.' Talk about dramatic change! It's unknown if reaching AGI is possible. Yet even without accomplishing this feat, we can expect vast societal shifts due to advancing technology in the coming years. As one more example, we must discuss robotics. As I described in this recent Forbes article, hospitality robotics are coming to a bar, restaurant, or hotel near you. Some tech visionaries, like Elon Musk and Peter Diamandis, predict we will have billions of humanoid robots by the year 2040. With so much change on the horizon, it's fitting that we consult a self-made billionaire for his advice to that 18-year-old uncertain as to how to navigate so much uncertainty. To explore how to think clearly through so much disruption, I sat down with John P. Calamos, Sr., founder of Calamos Investments. As of today, it now manages over $40 billion in assets on behalf of institutions and individual investors worldwide. Ahead of his new biography, written by New York Times bestselling author Joe Garner, The Sky's the Limit: Lessons in Service, Entrepreneurship and Achieving the American Dream (Wiley) I thought I'd pick the mogul's brain. Here's what I wished to know: in a world increasingly dominated by automation, AI, and now algorithmic efficiency, how does one stay ahead—not just short-term, but perennially? Calamos has a surprising answer: study philosophy. His advice is vindicating. Philosophy happens to be the subject I earned my B.A. in at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Back then, friends and peers alike teased me for my academic focus. 'What are you gonna do with that?' they asked. Unlike those naysayers, Calamos views such a degree as practical, especially in a time when higher education is pricing out would-be students. 'I tell young people all the time: You don't go to college to learn what to think. You go to college to learn how to think,' Calamos says. Calamos is well situated to offer such advice. Publicly known for his financial acumen, his intellectual roots reside in the tenets underlying Western Civilization. As a student at Illinois Institute of Technology, he was captivated not just by numbers, but by the ideas that shaped human destiny. 'Studying philosophy taught me the value of critical thinking, of challenging conventional wisdom and cultivating opinions based on deep inquiry,' he says. In decades past, college campuses championed spirited debates. Students could disagree—and remain friends. Today, polarization has stifled that openness, replacing critical inquiry with cautious conformity. As an introspective business leader, Calamos sees the loss of such intellectual openness as a threat to progress. 'Without the ability to debate, to challenge, and to explore, creativity dries up. Innovation is stifled,' says Calamos. He should know. Innovation is the very thing that kept his business alive through endless technological disruption. An 18-year-old living in 2025 may be surprised to know that when Calamos first launched his investment career in the late 1970s, he relied on primitive technology: a pencil and graph paper. Over the decades, he embraced each new tool that came along—from calculators to spreadsheets to computers to the Internet and eventually AI. 'Throughout, I kept asking: What's out there that can improve productivity?' he says. 'Technology helps us move forward—but only if we're willing to adapt. That comes from possessing a curious mind, one that's constantly questioning assumptions and biases.' It's little wonder Calamos credits intellectual agility as critical for staying one step ahead. To him, running a business is like riding a bike uphill. The moment you stop pedaling, you end up going backward. Cultivating such a growth mindset—one that values constant improvement—is what allowed him to continually reinvent his approach. In a time when so many youngsters outsource their cognitive abilities to ChatGPT so it can write their papers and do their thinking, Calamos' advice is a breath of fresh air. Just because AI is available doesn't mean anyone should stop using their brains. The opposite is true. He recommends cultivating curiosity and endless learning habits. After all, technology is helpful, but it's not the source of greatness. That comes from the person wielding such tools. Passion is another quality Calamos recommends young people develop. 'Do the inner work to discover what moves you, what inspires you.' Reflecting on what it took to build his own financial empire, Calamos credits grit as the main driver. Growing up poor lit a fire in him to get ahead. Raised in relative comfort, many Gen Z and Gen Alpha professionals unfortunately lack the same urgency to find their why. When asked what other trait an 18-year-old needs to thrive in a volatile landscape, Calamos doesn't hesitate: 'Selflessness.' This is why he's dismayed to see so many young professionals myopically focused on themselves. They approach life asking, What will you give me? instead of What can I give? 'All these years later, JFK's famous words have stayed with me,' he says. ''Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.'' That quote shaped Calamos' decision to join the Air Force after college, where he served for over 15 years. It also formed the foundation of his leadership philosophy: lead with service. Provide value. The rewards will follow. Returning to our 18-year-old, Calamos has some final advice on becoming a billionaire. And no, it's not about creating a unicorn company of one. It's also not about building a robot fleet to become ever more productive. It's not even about pursuing endless dollars. 'You don't chase money,' Calamos says. 'You chase excellence. Money is just a byproduct.' Being of service to others is paramount to Calamos' business philosophy. Yes, embracing tech gave him an edge. But really, it was his commitment to client relationships that brought him lasting market power. 'I knew if we took care of our people and did good work, the rest would follow,' he says. And it did. As AI reshapes our brave new world at a dizzying clip, the one constant we can expect is more change. Thankfully, Calamos' legacy offers a viable roadmap for future-proofing success. Though we live in a time of thinking machines, the importance of human thought cannot be overstated. As Calamos aptly suggests, life's perennial race to get ahead—and stay ahead—won't be won by ever more sophisticated algorithms or newfangled technology. No. The future belongs to those who value the sanctity of their minds, the most prized tool of all. Especially when it is directed to the noblest of ends—serving humankind.
