Bhopal bridge takes a sharp turn - literally: Internet explodes with memes
A brand-new railway overbridge in Bhopal has become the centre of heated online debate – not for its utility, but for an eyebrow-raising 90-degree turn in its design. Located near Aishbagh Stadium in Madhya Pradesh, images of the bizarre bridge design have gone viral, prompting concerns from social media users about potential safety risks for commuters. One X (formerly known as Twitter) user, with a username, 'The Skin Doctor', shared an image of the bridge, calling it a 'modern engineering marvel', sarcastically. 'This is the Aishbagh rail-over-bridge in Bhopal. PWD civil engineers took 10 years to create this. That 90° turn is a disaster waiting to happen unless there's proper banking, signage, speed breakers, and lighting,' the post read. The user also criticised the turn as a traffic choke point and questioned its long-term viability. What's the reason behind the design? Officials linked to the project explained that the bridge's sharp turn was a result of land constraints and the proximity of a metro rail station. According to the Public Works Department (Bridge Department) Chief Engineer V.D. Verma, "Due to the metro station, there is limited land availability. The design was the only feasible option to connect the two colonies." Verma further clarified that only small vehicles will be allowed to use the overbridge, with safety protocols including speed limits, lighting, and signage to be maintained as per Indian Road Congress guidelines. Made with a budget of ₹18 crore, the 648-metre-long and 8.5-metre-wide bridge aims to improve connectivity for Aishbagh residents. It is expected to reduce commute times by removing the need to wait at a level crossing or take longer alternate routes. X users react with memes and mockery Social media reactions have ranged from humorous to scathing. Some users suggested the bridge looked like it belonged in a video game, while others slammed it as a 'waste of taxpayer money.' 'This is what happens when accountability is a myth,' one user wrote. 'PWD gems like this belong in a museum,' joked another. One user shared their thoughts on this bridge, saying, 'Merit wale engineers hi aisa marvel bana sakte hai.' Another user wrote, 'Pura 90 degree to nehi hai magar ye engineering ka ek nayab marvel hai jarur, hat's off to all those involved in this great project, company ka maal dariya mein daal jaisa ho gaya.' 'A PWD Gem. This should make it to some Architectural Hall of Fame !!' another wrote. Congress' Kerala X handle took a dig at the government and wrote: 'Elite design team under the leadership of @AshwiniVaishnaw has built an engineering marvel in Bhopal. A right angle Railway Over Bridge. While ordinary engineers would have gone straight across the hypotenuse (√(3² + 4²) = 5), this team cleverly chose 3 + 4 = 7. Longer route, bigger budget, more chances to siphon off public money. True innovation.'

Passenger beaten up in 3AC coach over pricing complaint. Railways reacts to video
A passenger travelling on the Hemkunt Express was allegedly beaten up in his 3AC coach on May 7, just hours after filing an online complaint about being overcharged by the catering staff. A video of the incident posted by the passenger on his YouTube channel 'Mr Vishal' has sparked outrage, especially after a snippet of the clip was shared on X by The Skin Doctor. In the now-viral video, several men - allegedly pantry staff - are seen walking into the train compartment and confronting the passenger as he rests on his third-tier berth. 'I had complained because you were overcharging for water,' the passenger is heard saying in the video as he records the confrontation. Ignoring his protest, the men demand he descend from the berth. When he refuses, one of the men climbs up and appears to physically assault him. The passenger later revealed that the man had not only beaten him but also torn his clothes and left him injured, with visible blood on his hands. Here's the video posted by The Skin Doctor: Outrageous! A passenger filed an online complaint about being overcharged by catering staff on 14609, Hemkunt express. Just hours later, he was brutally beaten by the pantry staff, simply for daring to raise a complaint! Today's incident. THE SKIN DOCTOR (@theskindoctor13) May 7, 2025 In the full video that was posted on his YouTube channel, Vishal was seen purchasing a bottle of water from a vendor during his journey in the 3AC coach. Vishal was handed a bottle labelled Wonder Aqua and charged Rs 20 for it. After Vishal questioned the overpricing and asked him to sell water bottles manufactured by the company, he was told by the vendor: ' Yahi mila, sir (I just have this).' 'They are selling Wonder Aqua which is not approved. This is not right,' he said. Concerned by the overcharging, he also lodged a formal complaint through the RailMadad app. Not long after, he received a call from railway officials, during which he recounted the entire episode in detail. But what followed was the confrontation with the pantry staff shortly after the complaint was filed. Watch the full video here: As public outrage grew rapidly after the video went viral, Railway Seva, the official support account of Indian Railways, addressed the incident on X. 'The case is being taken with utmost seriousness. A penalty of Rs 5 lakh has been imposed on the caterer. An FIR has been lodged by GRP, Kathua. The matter remains under strict watch. Stern action will follow based on the investigation outcome,' read the tweet posted by Railway Seva. The brutal retaliation over a legitimate complaint has raised questions about passenger safety and the accountability of onboard catering staff.
