Former Spartan James Piot makes the cut at the Rocket Classic

On Thursday, the Rocket Classic commenced for it seventh edition at the Detroit Golf Club, bringing the PGA Tour back to Detroit. A late addition to the field, former Spartan and United States Amateur champion James Piot was added thanks to a sponsors exemption. He took advantage of his opportunity. After a two-under day on Thursday, the former Spartan rifled a four-under round on Friday, setting himself up at six-under. That number was good enough to make the cut and the weekend at the Rocket Classic. The made cut for Piot is his first career made cut on the PGA Tour. A former LIV golfer, he made history by playing on the PGA Tour after playing for LIV, but now, he makes personal history for himself. Piot will look to make another move up the leaderboard on moving day on Saturday when he tees off at 7:55 a.m., playing in a group alongside Paul Peterson. Two former Spartans fail to make the cut at the 2025 Rocket Classic

Two former Michigan State golfers had high hopes for their time at their hometown PGA Tour event, the Rocket Classic, but unfortunately, things did not go as planned. Ryan Brehm, a longtime PGA Tour veteran, and Ashton McCulloch, an amateur on the tour, both failed to make the cut at Detroit's PGA Tour event at the Detroit Golf Club. For Brehm, things were looking promising. After a one-under round on Thursday, he was four-under in his second round on Friday. A terrible finish ensued for Brehm, though, who ended the day even par. McCulloch had a week to forget. A six-over round on Thursday was parlayed with a two-over Friday round, making him eight-over on the tournament. Both former Spartans will not see the weekend in Detroit. Watch Coen Carr-Cam Ward convert highlight dunk play at Moneyball Pro-Am

Ward to Carr. Heeeeeey. The second night of Moneyball Pro-Am featured some more fireworks from the Spartans' walking highlights machine -- Coen Carr. Carr threw down some massive dunks on opening night of Moneyball Pro-Am earlier this week, and he was back again on Thursday with some more impressive plays. One of the most notable highlight dunks from Carr came on a dish from incoming freshman Cam Ward. In the highlight play you'll see Ward put the ball between his legs and then purposely throw the ball off the backboard for a trailing Carr to slam. It's quite the play from both Ward and Carr. Check out the highlight dunk from Carr off the backboard pass from Ward in the video below -- video courtesy of Spartans Illustrated: Contact/Follow us @The SpartansWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Michigan State news, notes and opinion. Former Spartan golfer making history on the PGA Tour at the Rocket Classic

Former Michigan State golfer James Piot has made a return to the PGA Tour, playing in his hometown event at the Rocket Classic in Detroit at the Detroit Golf Club this weekend. With his return to the tour, he is also making history. After winning the US Amateur championship, Piot began his pro career, but instead of beginning it within in the PGA Tour, he chose to go to the LIV Golf Tour. Piot spent two years on the LIV tour, but is now back, looking to make a return to the PGA Tour. Unfortunately, due to his involvement with LIV, Piot was suspended from the PGA Tour. Now, Piot may have found the pathway for LIV golfers returning the PGA Tour. Piot was given a sponsors exemption into the PGA Tour event in Detroit, allowing him to play in the field this week. He is officially the first player from LIV to receive a sponsor's exemption on the PGA Tour, making history between the two tours. It will be very interesting to see where this leads with the ongoing relationship between the PGA Tour and LIV. One thing is for sure, though, a former Spartan is one to make history between the tours. Spartan golfer Ashton McCulloch has tough first round at 2025 Rocket Classic

With the PGA Tour returning to Detroit for the Rocket Classic, and the headlining sponsor being Rocket Mortgage, a major partner with MSU, recent MSU senior Ashton McCulloch was given a sponsors exemption into the field for the 2025 event. The event, taking place at Detroit Golf Club, was McCulloch's fourth event on the PGA Tour, while still competing as an amateur. The Spartan was looking to make his first cut on the tour, narrowly missing the cut by one stroke earlier this year at the RBC Canadian Open. Unfortunately for McCulloch, it was not his day on the course. An eight bogey, two birdie day left him at a final score of 78 (+6) on the day. While making the cut is highly improbable, McCulloch will still play his second round on Friday with an 8:57 a.m. tee time on the first tee.
