Whether it's canine massages or ‘pawdicures,' Los Angeles pups get five-star treatment

It's no secret. Los Angeles loves dogs. Everywhere you go is crawling with dogs, and they are living their best lives. I even wrote about it in a previous edition of this newsletter. I've certainly seen dogs seated inside restaurants and being pushed around in strollers. But I've never seen one at a spa. I've also never heard of a dog having more frequent-flier miles than some humans. Canines enjoy these things and more in The Times' newest series, Dog Days of Summer, in which my colleagues dig into the city's obsession with dogs and the most extravagant things L.A. humans do for their furry best friends. Wellness for dogs mirrors the spectrum of wellness treatments for humans — be they relaxing and rejuvenating or dubious — my colleague Deborah Vankin writes. Deborah followed Dug the dog around for a week as he experienced L.A.'s dog wellness scene, including sound baths for hounds, canine massage, 'pawdicures' and reiki meditation for mutts. Dug, an 8-year-old golden retriever, was chauffeured to his spa treatment in a presidential Cadillac stretch limo. While at Collar & Comb in West Hollywood, he received a blueberry facial and exfoliating mud mask from the same professionals who groom the dogs of Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Wahlberg and Dakota Johnson. And that's just on the pampering end of the spectrum. There are also vet-affiliated treatments including acupuncture, hydrotherapy and chiropractic care. As self-care for humans becomes more popular, there are more wellness products and services being developed for dogs. Plus, an increasing number of pet owners now view their dogs as children, 'Pet Buzz' radio show co-host Charlotte Reed told Deborah. 'People are worried about the world. So a lot of people are not having children — and they're treating their dogs like kids,' Reed said. 'Dogs — like kids — are a reflection of your lifestyle. If you're into health and wellness, that's what you want your dog to be into.' Be careful not to project your human desires onto animals that don't share the same tastes, warns American Kennel Club chief veterinarian Dr. Jerry Klein. 'A lot of this stuff, it's geared to the humans. But what we derive pleasure and relaxation from might create the opposite for a dog that might not want to be touched or handled. People should get their vet's opinion, always, before doing anything that might affect the dog's health.' But who are we kidding? That's not going to stop Angeleno pet owners from taking their dogs for deep-tissue massages and inflammation-fighting red light therapy. ‘Eddington' actor Micheal Ward charged with rape and sexual assault in U.K.

British actor Micheal Ward, known for the Netflix series 'Top Boy' and and most recently Ari Aster's movie 'Eddington,' is facing charges of allegedly raping and sexually assaulting a woman in the United Kingdom in 2023. London's Metropolitan Police announced in a Friday statement that prosecutors had charged BAFTA winner Ward, 28, with two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault following an investigation into an alleged January 2023 incident. The statement did not provide details about the incident, including the location and the identity of Ward's accuser. 'Our specialist officers continue to support the woman who has come forward — we know investigations of this nature can have significant impact on those who make reports,' Det. Supt. Scott Ware said in the statement. Representatives for Ward did not immediately respond to The Times' request for comment Friday. The actor is due to appear at Thames Magistrates' Court in London on Aug. 28. Ward, who was born in Jamaica, broke into acting less than a decade ago, appearing in the British drama series 'Top Boy' and rapper Rapman's 2019 film 'Blue Story.' He won BAFTA's rising star award in 2020. That same year he appeared in 'The Old Guard' opposite Charlize Theron and in Steve McQueen's 'Small Axe' miniseries. His movie credits also include Sam Mendes' 'Empire of Light,' 'The Book of Clarence,' 'Bob Marley: One Love' and 'The Beautiful Game.' He currently stars as a young police officer in 'Eddington,' the latest film from 'Hereditary' and 'Midsommar' filmmaker Aster.

Scotland's 'best places to go snorkelling' this summer named as sea loch tops list

Summer is a great time of year for a snorkel adventure. The "best places to go snorkelling" in Scotland have been revealed. Swimming spots in Argyll, Aberdeenshire, and East Lothian were all singled out. ‌ With July almost over and the end of summer in sight, it is important to make the most of the season while we can. For those looking for a unique activity, Scotland is home to many beauty spots that are perfectly suited for a snorkel. ‌ On Tuesday, July 22, The Times published a list of the top destinations around Scotland for snorkelling. A total of five scenic spots for a snorkel are featured on the roundup. ‌ The best snorkelling spot in Scotland according to The Times is Loch Craignish. The attractive sea loch is found on the mid-Argyll coast, between Oban and the Crinan Canal. Loch Craignish is a gateway to the Isle of Jura sound, and is known for featuring in the 1963 James Bond movie From Russia With Love. The loch is described as a "great site for beginners" by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, with plenty for swimmers to discover in the seagrass bed close to the shore. According to The Times, the loch is bursting with "colour and life". It also praised the Seawilding rewilding project, which is the first community-based native oyster and seagrass restoration project in the UK. ‌ The newspaper wrote: "Twenty-five miles south of Oban, Loch Craignish is home to seagrass and native oyster restoration projects by the Seawilding rewilding project, a community-led initiative. Now packed with colour and life, shoals of two-spot gobies dart about. "If you look closely, you will almost certainly spy a sea slug or two. Access directly opposite the village hall." ‌ Loch Craignish has also been praised by day trippers, with the beauty spot having an overall rating of 4.7 out of five on Google based on 11 reviews. Previous visitors have described it as "breathtaking" and "spectacular". Meanwhile, following behind in second place on The Times' roundup is High Shore Beach. The pebble beach is found near the Macduff Marine Aquarium in the Aberdeenshire town of Macduff. ‌ According to the Scottish Wildlife Trust, High Shore Beach offers a wide selection of tide pools to investigate. Snorkellers may be able to spot a variety of interesting species—with octopuses found there in the past. The newspaper stated: "Rocky fingers project out to sea, hosting a maze of kelp-filled gullies that are part of the Moray Firth Snorkel Trail. Look for the red eyes of a nimble velvet swimming crab, or slow-moving starfish between the rocks." ‌ Coming in at number three on The Times' list is the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick. As stated by the newspaper, the attraction is one of five sites situated along the East Lothian Snorkel Trail. The Scottish Seabird Centre was praised for being suited to both beginner snorkellers and those with more experience. According to The Times, less advanced swimmers can investigate the sizeable shallow tidal pool beneath the attraction and those looking for more of a challenge can try the rocky gullies on the headland. The full list of Scotland's "best places to go snorkelling" can be found on The Times website.
