Rangers injury update issued ahead of Panathinaikos clash

The teams will lock horns in the first leg of the Champions League qualifier, with the return leg taking place in Greece next week. New signing Thelo Aasgaard will miss the game for Rangers, as he recovers from a knock. However, in a positive update from the manager, it was revealed that Hamza Igamane, Cyriel Dessers and Djeidi Gassama are all ready to play a part in the game, albeit not for 90 minutes. "Thelo is the only injury concern, our great medical team is working really hard to get him back," Martin told the media. "To come through pre-season with only one injury concern is really good, and it is a collaborative effort. "Cyriel, Hamza and Djeidi are all ready to contribute, not ready for 90 minutes just yet, but we will see them at some point over the two ties." Read more: Meanwhile, the new head coach called on Ibrox to get behind the side as they look to push for league phase football in UEFA's top competition. He added: "We will need the supporters; they have been brilliant with me around the city. "I hope they can feel a freshness and energy in their team tomorrow night."

Rangers injury update issued ahead of Panathinaikos clash

The former Southampton boss is set for his competitive debut in the dugout at Ibrox on Tuesday night as the Greek side come to town. 8 things we spotted at Rangers training as key new signing misses out but blockbuster Ibrox debut is teased

Russell Martin was literally scratching his head as he considers his options ahead of Tuesday's clash Thelo Aasgaard sat out of Rangers training ahead of Tuesday night's clash with Panathinaikos in a firm hint it may be too soon for the new signing to feature. Russell Martin put his players through their paces in an intense session before the Champions League second qualifying round first leg that will signify the new boss' first competitive game in charge. The importance of advancing hardly needed underlined but Rangers now know that progress will hand them a slightly more favourable clash with Servette or Viktoria Plzen – while dropping into the Europa League means a brutal showdown with either Besiktas or Shakhtar Donetsk. But they aren't thinking worst case scenario as they put the finishing touches on things ahead of two massive legs with Panathinaikos. Martin will hope to have a number of new signings to call upon and the likes of Joe Rothwell and Max Aarons, who have featured heavily in pre-season, seem certs to start. There is some ambiguity where Aasgaard is concerned and, having sat out of training altogether on Tuesday, he seems unlikely to be involved – certainly from the start. Djeidi Gassama did train and while Martin appeared to suggest it may also come too soon for him, the lack of other options in the wide areas means he'll be given every chance. Rangers' Aasgaard a doubt for Panathinaikos first leg

Summer signing Thelo Aasgaard is "touch and go" to feature in the first leg of Rangers' Champions League qualifier with Panathinaikos, says head coach Russell Martin. The Ibrox boss says the Norway midfielder, who joined from Luton this summer, "has been incredible" since making the move to Govan. However, the 23-year-old has "picked up a little something" during Rangers' pre-season preparations and is now a major doubt for Tuesday's match at Ibrox. "It's disappointing for him and for us," Martin told Rangers TV. "He has been everything we thought we were getting and more. Since he has been in he has been incredible. "His understanding, his athleticism, the power he has, the technical capability, he really is an exciting player for us. "Unfortunately, it is a different level of intensity and it has been high demands in pre-season. "He has picked up a little something so he is going to be touch and go. "We hope he can be involved, but if not then we are really hopeful he will be ready and raring to go for the second one." Martin also revealed fellow summer recruit Djeidi Gassama is "a little bit behind in terms of fitness" and the winger will not be ready to start on Tuesday. "Not too much, too soon," the Rangers boss added. "He is not ready to start the game, but he is totally different to anything we have got. "He is unpredictable, he is a fantastic one-v-one specialist. He has real individual talent and I think, well we are convinced, within our framework and team structure, he can really stand out and create moments for us that will really be brilliant. "He will be in the squad, he will definitely be ready for the second game, but the first game we might have to manage his minutes and expectations."
