Viral TikTok captures arrest of phone thief at ABSA Run Your City Durban
The cell phone thief nabbed on Sunday. Image: screenshot A Durban woman was arrested at the weekend after allegedly stealing cellphones from runners who took part in the ABSA Run Your City Series. The 10km race took place on Sunday, July 13, between Suncoast and Golden Mile. A video of the woman's arrest on TikTok has garnered over 53,400 likes, over 12,000 reposts, and over 1.9 million views. In the 10-second video, the woman who has been arrested is being loaded into the back of a police van. The woman filming the incident can be heard saying: 'Absa race, all our phones got stolen. Look at needs to be banned from the race'. According to one of the victims, the woman had cut bags throughout the race and stolen the cell phones of those running. Police recovered six cell phones in the woman's possession. Victims managed to track down the thief using Apple technology to find their iPhones. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad Loading 'Police in Durban Central have arrested a 56-year-old woman for possession of items suspected to be stolen, following an incident in which the woman allegedly stole cell phones on July 13, 2025, on Jelf Taylors Street,' Ngcobo said. The woman has already appeared in court. 'The suspect appeared before the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday, July 14, 2025, and she was remanded in custody. She is due to appear again before court on July 21, 2025,' Ngcobo said. The race saw 10,000 runners participate. The marathon proudly supports the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) as the official charity of the entire series of events. The next leg of the series will take place in Tshwane on Sunday, August 24, and Johannesburg on Wednesday, September 24. IOL

Amanzimtoti police release June crime statistics
AMANZIMTOTI'S finest had a busy June, conducting several raids in which a total of 18 suspects were arrested for various contact and property-related crimes, including assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, murder, fraud and truck jacking. Convictions range from three months to three years direct imprisonment, or fines of R6 000 up to R20 000. This comes after the spokesperson for the KZN Police provincial commissioner, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, confirmed that across the province police arrested almost 11 000 suspects. Ngcobo assured that police operations in crime hotspots are ongoing, aiming to curb the number of crimes committed. 'During the current school recess, police will maintain high visibility as holidaymakers descend on KZN,' said Ngcobo. Amanzimtoti police communications officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy, appealed to the community to assist detectives with information that can lead to arrests, and later conviction of suspects. She said, 'We work hand-in-hand with security companies, CPFs and neighbourhood watch groups, looking at a proactive approach in combating crime. This ongoing relationship continues to isolate criminals and create a safe, secure Amanzimtoti.' Over 10 800 suspects nabbed in major KZN police crackdown
KwaZulu-Natal police arrested 10,872 suspects in June in a major month-long crime crackdown, with 3,278 arrests for contact crimes, including 197 for murder and 1,559 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Provincial SAPS spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said the FCS Unit also arrested 207 suspects for rape and 19 for other sexual offences, while 1,856 people were arrested on drug-related charges. In addition, 554 arrests were made for driving under the influence, and 869 undocumented persons were detained. 'Visible policing continues in crime hotspot areas, with a strong presence expected throughout the school holidays to ensure public safety as visitors head to KwaZulu-Natal,' Thenjiswa said. Targeted killing? eThekwini Municipality employee gunned down in KwaZulu-Natal
A 51-year-old man believed to be an eThekwini Municipality employee was shot dead in a suspected targeted killing while driving to his residence in Mhlasini, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday evening. The incident unfolded shortly before 7pm, when the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre received multiple calls for assistance after gunmen ambushed a blue Hyundai i10 at the corner of Hazelmere Drive and Quarry Road in Redcliffe. "Verulam police have opened a case of murder and two of attempted murder following the incident in which three people were allegedly attacked while in the vehicle. The motive for the killing is unknown," said police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo.

Doctor survives Westville shooting en route to work
A Durban doctor survived after being shot multiple times while driving to work in Westville on Friday. Police are investigating a case of attempted murder. A doctor escaped with injuries after he was shot while travelling to work on Friday morning. The doctor, believed to be a gastroenterologist, came under fire while on his way to work in the Westville area. According to KZN police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, a case of attempted murder has been opened. "This follows an incident in which a 65-year-old man was attacked by unknown men while on his way to work. "He was able to escape but suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The motive of the attack is unknown." In another shooting incident, a man was killed in Avoca, north of Durban, on Thursday. The victim had been exiting his driveway in his vehicle when gunmen travelling in a white Toyota Etios stopped and an armed suspect opened fire on him. The man died on the scene. Police said a hunt was underway for the suspects. IOL News
