Hibs new record signing Thibault Klidjé's career so far
Togo international Thibault Klidjé has become David Gray's fourth summer signing. The 24-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the Club and will join the Hibs following international clearance and work permit approval. Born in Hahotoé, Togo, Klidjé began his football career with Togolese outfits Espoir Tsevie and Gomido before making his first move to Europe. He signed for Girondins de Bordeaux in 2020, initially featuring prominently for the French club's B Team. Seven goals in 11 league matches in the lower divisions during the 2021/22 season was enough to convince David Guion to give Klidjé his first chance in the top flight. Though financial mismanagement saw Bordeaux relegated at the end of the campaign, Klidjé impressed enough in his five Ligue 1 appearances to earn a move to Swiss Super League side FC Luzern. A first campaign in Switzerland ended prematurely in April for Klidjé due to injury, but only after he appeared 14 times for the club after arriving from France, helping them secure fourth spot in the Super League as well as qualification to the UEFA Conference League. The injury sustained in April 2023 ruled the forward out until early October – which also forced Klidjé to miss out on a trip to Easter Road in the UEFA Conference League. Despite this setback, he bounced back stronger; playing 24 league games, scoring four goals and providing three assists across the 2023/24 season – with his first goal in Switzerland a crucial late equaliser against Zurich. After settling into life in Luzern and having a full pre-season under his belt for the first time since arriving in Switzerland, Klidjé had an excellent 2024/25 campaign at the Swissporarena. He scored 10 times in 37 league appearances, as well as grabbing three assists, throughout the 2024/25 season – while also scoring twice in two Swiss Cup appearances. These impressive performances and crucial goal contributions helped guide Luzern back into the top half of the Swiss Super League after dropping into the bottom six the previous campaign. Klidjé is also an 18-time Togo international, making his debut in a World Cup qualifier versus Congo on 9 October 2021. A first international goal came three years later in October 2024 against Algeria during a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match. The forward had also previously represented Togo Under-21s and Under-23s – captaining the latter during a set of international friendlies, in which he scored in both matches against Tajikistan and Malawi. Hibs have broken their record transfer fee to sign striker Thibault Klidjé on a three year deal from Swiss Super League side Luzern. The 24-year old forward, who has been capped 18 times for Togo, becomes the Easter Road club's fourth signing of the window following the arrivals of Jamie McGrath, Raphael Sallinger and Josh Mulligan. He previously played in France's Ligue 1 with Bordeaux before signing for Luzern in 2022. Klidjé was not part of the squad though, signing two weeks after the Edinburgh club knocked them out of the competition. How much have Hibs paid for Thibault Klidjé? What was the previous record transfer fee? Hibs have not officially confirmed the transfer fee but have qnnounced that it is a club record. The previous record was held by Ulises de la Cruz for over two decades after the Edinburgh club paid around £700,000 for his services in 2001. The Edinburgh Evening News understands that the Hibees have smashed that record and forked out over £1 million for Klidjé. That makes him the first official seven figure signing by a Scottish club, other than Celtic or Rangers, since Aberdeen paid £1 million to Oldham Athletic to sign Paul Bernard in 1995 - although some signings for 'undisclosed' amounts since then have been rumoured to be above that number.
