From Fighting Frizz To Boosting Volume, 4 Steps To Achieving Perfect Beach Waves This Summer
Beach waves are quintessentially the summer hairstyle to have. There's a reason why this the salt-stricken style comes back year after year with a fresh twist. A beachy wave evokes the carefree spirit of 1960s LA, blending the effortless glamour of Brigitte Bardot with the bohemian vibes of Stevie Nicks. Today's iteration, modelled by the likes of Hailey Bieber, Sophia Richie, and Laura Harrier, is easier than ever to achieve thanks to advanced styling tools. Take, a Dyson Airwrap, for example, which can create soft curls and - once smoothed with a large paddle brush - leave you with the most graceful waves. If a beach getaway isn't on the cards, a generous application of salt spray can help you emulate that seaside feeling. For this season's iteration of the perennially cool hairstyle, the memo is nonchalance. 'Think, looser, half-done, and less 'styled,'' says Nataliia Bumford, stylist at Hershesons Belgravia. Unlike the crispy coils of the 2000s, 'today's version is softer and shiner—more polished, less matte—focusing on natural shape and healthy texture rather than grit and stiffness.' That said, Noughties beach waves were a major moment, and for good reason. Gisele Bündchen and the Olsen twins led the surge. Think Valley girl meets VS Angel. The trusty 'twist and pull' with a flat iron marked the distinct beachy blowout of the day. Alexa Chung (circa 2010) gave beach waves the indie sleaze treatment. Alternating curl direction and left-as-is ends gave Kristen Stewart and co that random cool-girl kink to their coils. Despite the decade, blasé beach waves have stood the test of time. To create enviably beachy waves, listen closely. 'Start with damp hair, apply a little leave-in conditioner or curl cream, then mist on the new Hershesons Air Dry Spray,' advises Bumford. 'It defines the wave, adds hold, smooths frizz, and offers UV protection—while leaving a soft, touchable finish that's never matte or crunchy.' For that lived-in-look let it air-dry, 'or braid/twist for extra shape,' adds Bumford. Don't shirk on touching up the ends of your hair with a smidge of oil for added shine and softness. Whether you're embracing your natural texture or reaching for next-gen tools, the beauty of beach waves lies in their flexibility, and finish. Here's how to master the look, with a little help from some industry icons. For soft, undone waves without the damage, overnight braids remain a tried-and-true technique. Satin-covered rollers or a DIY robe tie wrap offer a gentle, bougie workaround for heat styling. Wake up, shake out, and finish with Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray for an airy, editorial finish. Alternate your curl direction for that effortless, unstructured wave. The Dyson Airwrap i.d remains the gold standard for damage-minimising curling, while the GHD Creative Curl Wand creates seamless, beachy bends with a single twist. For a nod to early-2000s texture, a Mermade PRO Waver delivers that sculpted mermaid effect without veering crunchy. Once styled, smooth waves with a Mason Pearson paddle brush for polish, or finger-comb with a touch of Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil through the ends for shine and separation. If air-drying is more your speed, scrunch in R+Co Cool Wind pH Perfect Air Dry Crème and diffuse with the Curlsmith diffuser for shape and volume, especially on textured or curly hair. Finally, lock it in without losing softness. Hershesons Air Dry Spray is an editor favourite for hold, definition and UV protection, no crunch, just movement. Or reach for Rahua Enchanted Island Salt Spray, a chic, botanically charged mist that mimics that just-off-the-beach texture, even if you're nowhere near a coastline. Bumford cites Margot Robbie, Sydney Sweeney and Emily Ratajkowski as devout beachy wave-ers. Why not road-test the look for yourself? And, if you're in a rush, the look can be perfected (well, un-perfected, but that's what's so great about it) in a flash. 'For fast waves, use a Mermaid wave maker (the Hershesons Multi-Tasker) on dry hair to create soft, sculpted bends,' explains Bumford. 'Alternatively, with a curling wand, curl random sections while pulling the hair downward to keep the shape relaxed. Finish either way with Hershesons Air Dry Spray for hold, texture and definition.' Hadid's salted mane is, and always will be, right in the centre of the summer mood board. Rich, dark chocolate ruffles will never not be chic. Depp gives the beach-ready do a bit of French zhuzh. Party girl pink will add some edge to your waves, whether sunning on the coast or dancing in the club. Shift the tide with a swanky side-part draped over your shoulder. Rosé's rinsed lengths are oh-so old Hollywood and look effortlessly chic come peak-summer. We're on the same wavelength as ELLE cover star EmRata. Her face-framing bangs are just the crowning glory. Beach waves serve just as hard with protective hairstyles. Tyla's goddess braids are a perfect example. Harrier's beach waves work perfectly with the natural curl pattern and texture of her hair. Ever the arbiter of an edgy hairstyle, Cyrus brings some grit to summer beach waves. Jessica Chastain's long, flowing lengths are the perfect embodiment of beach waves, and prime summer inspo if you're a natural redhead. Pritzker launches campaign for 3rd term as Illinois governor
CHICAGO — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is running for a third term in 2026 — even as questions swirl about whether he will make a bid for president two years later. 'Illinois is standing at the center of the fight — the fight to make life more affordable, the fight to protect our freedoms, the fight for common sense,' Pritzker said in a video announcing his reelection bid. The two-term Democratic governor is scheduled to address supporters at a rally on Chicago's South Side on Thursday morning before visiting Rockford, Peoria and Springfield. Illinois does not have term limits for statewide offices, though there hasn't been a three-term governor since Republican Jim Thompson, who won four times and held office from 1977 to 1991. Pritzker has been a fierce critic of President Donald Trump, and his campaign kick-off continues the drumbeat, attacking the administration for unleashing 'chaos' and 'craziness,' and ticking off concerns about farmers and small businesses being hurt by the administration's tariffs. It's familiar territory for Pritzker, who has been among the most vocal Democrats to speak out against Trump. He has pushed back at fellow Democrats, too, saying they need to show 'guts' in standing up against the White House. The 60-year-old governor is seen as a shoo-in to win the primary in March. Illinois Republicans have yet to step up with a challenger, but whoever their nominee is will almost certainly face a formidable incumbent in Pritzker — a billionaire heir to the Hyatt Hotel fortune who will self-fund his campaign in the deep blue state. The governor's kick-off comes after months of speculation about whether he would seek reelection at a time of financial uncertainty as the state faces pension funding challenges — and whether he'll make a run for president. He has demurred when asked about his national political ambitions. In an April interview with POLITICO, Pritzker insisted he's just trying to bring attention to Illinois and call out Trump's tariffs. However, his numerous national appearances — including on CNN and headlining a major Democratic event in New Hampshire — and his Think Big America nonprofit, which is focused on helping states expand abortion rights, have only fueled the buzz about a potential 2028 presidential bid. Missing from Pritzker's kick-off ad is his lieutenant governor, Juliana Stratton, who is running for U.S. Senate, hoping to fill the seat of retiring Sen. Dick Durbin. Pritzker has endorsed Stratton for the job but has yet to indicate who will run with him on the 2026 ticket.

Grand Canyon University, Lovelace partner on accelerated nursing program in Albuquerque
Jun. 3—Brandy Vandermolen loved the excitement and constant change of working in emergency medical services for seven years. Now, she wants to be on stable ground as a hospital nurse. Vandermolen, who lives in the Albuquerque area, will graduate from Grand Canyon University's new Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program in April to achieve this goal. The university's Albuquerque campus officially launched its program on Tuesday — an innovative partnership between the school and Lovelace Health System, which offers students hands-on learning through in-person clinical settings. The program, a 16-month curriculum that also includes online learning, directly addresses New Mexico's nursing shortage by putting professionals in the field faster. Stacey Fort, Lovelace director of education, said there are about 7,000 nursing jobs posted in New Mexico alone. Separately, the state could lose 5,140 nurses over the next 10 years, according to a 2024 Think New Mexico report. "We've had a nursing shortage for decades, but COVID really changed the whole scene of nursing staffing," Fort said. "New Mexico only has 16,000 practicing nurses. We need more than that." Danielle Edwards, GCU executive director of nursing services, said the program enrolls cohorts every spring, summer and fall semester. The university has similar setups across the country, including one in St. Louis, Missouri, that launched last year. She said each group has a maximum capacity of 48, adding that the goal is to keep these students in New Mexico upon graduation. The 16-month curriculum includes online coursework, in-person clinicals and immersive skills labs at GCU's Albuquerque campus, which received upgrades as part of its partnership with Lovelace. The GCU facility houses a student lounge, an immersive simulation suite, two skills labs and two classrooms. Edwards said construction began last August and was completed in December, ready to aid the first cohort of Albuquerque students who started classes in January, including Vandermolen. The collaboration also allows students to complete clinicals at Lovelace sites, giving them real-world experience and helping foster professional relationships with instructors. Fort said the partnership also provides Lovelace's staff with opportunities to grow by becoming GCU adjunct faculty. "Our instructors were nurses, so they bring a wealth of information," Vandermolen said. "Partnering with Lovelace and getting to go on their sites and meet the nurses that are working currently, talking with them and their experiences, and the things that they find important for us to know to implement in our care is really important."

Of Notoriety: Tina Turner tribute concert on tap with NWI Symphony Orchestra
NWI Symphony Conductor Kirk Muspratt 'tipped his hand' earlier this month during the final concerts of the 2025 season, providing his sly tease about some of the concert programming that awaits audiences next season. Muspratt, 71, now halfway through his two-year contract with the orchestra, celebrated his 25-year-anniversary leading the NWI Symphony. Themed as 'Pops Closer: The Music of Tina Turner,' the 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2026, concert salutes music icon Turner who died at age 83 in May 2023. It will be hosted at Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana and will star talents LaKisha Jones, Nova Y. Payton and Armando Imagines. Jones won over television music fans and the FOX TV 'American Idol' judges when she placed fourth on the sixth season in 2007 belting out her rendition of Aretha Franklin's 'Think.' I'm told music lyrics paired with images will guide audiences (ages 21 and older) on a journey through Tina Turner's legendary musical career with songs like 'What's Love Got to Do with It,' 'Disco Inferno,' 'Proud Mary' and others for a 'sentimental yet powerful' salute to the eight-time Grammy-winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. The fall date has also been announced for the annual NWI Symphony Gala on Friday, Oct. 10, with the theme 'Sabor Vivo!' and headliner entertainers Conjuncto combining classical training and theory with the freedom of jazz improvisation, all grounded in the lively rhythms of the Caribbean like the rumba, son, danzón, bolero and Afro-roots and then back to salsa and jazz. The full season will be announced to the public June 15 with details at the orchestra office at 219-836-0525 or The free summer concert dates are announced, all at 7:30 p.m. with Lansing on Friday, July 18 at Fox Pointe on 18138 Henry St., Gary on Friday, July 25 at Marquette Park at 1 N. Grand Blvd., Crown Point on Saturday, July 26 on the lawn at St. Anthony – Majestic Care at the corner of Main and Franciscan, Munster July 29 at Centennial Park on Calumet Ave. at Centennial Dr., Valparaiso on Wednesday, July 30 at Central Park Plaza at 63 Lafayette St., and Griffith at Central Park at 600 N. Broad St. Earlier this month, Muspratt's quarter-of-a-century with the NWI Symphony was feted with the unveiling of a new South Shore Line poster featuring Muspratt as imagined by artist John Rush and sponsored by Mechanical Concepts, Inc. The posters are available in the South Shore Arts Gift Shop at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road in Munster and priced at $35 to $100 with autographed prints available. Muspratt divides his time with his duties and assignments as both maestro for the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and also as music director of New Philharmonic Orchestra based in the suburb of Glen Ellyn, and artistic director and music director of DuPage Opera Theatre and New Philharmonic Opera, the latter as musical assignments he began in 2004. Raised in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, Muspratt will be recognized with another distinction this week for his passion and enthusiasm for music and music education by the University of Lethbridge when he is presented with an honorary degree at Spring 2025 Convocation at 9 a.m. Friday, May 30. 'Kirk Muspratt is remarkable for his unwavering commitment to make classical music accessible and enjoyable for all people,' ULethbridge Chancellor Terry Whitehead said. 'His unique approach breaks barriers and invites people, especially younger audiences, into the classical world, entertaining and educating all at once. He is richly deserving of an honorary degree.' Muspratt said his first piano lesson with Mrs. Madeline Pinkney after his first day of school is credited with shaping his musical career path. At age 6, he participated in music festivals in the Crowsnest Pass and, at age 8, he entered festivals in Lethbridge. He joined the Crowsnest Pass Symphony Orchestra at age 11, and after high school was accepted at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City. He went on to study at Temple University in Philadelphia and the Vienna Conservatory. Muspratt had a summer apprenticeship with Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood, the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer academy for advanced music study. Muspratt implemented an Orchestral Fellowship Program with Valparaiso University, and his vision helped found the South Shore Music Festival. His career has included serving as assistant conductor at the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, music director of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, associate conductor at the Utah Symphony Orchestra, resident conductor at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Alberta Ballet.
