Time is precious like gold – this is an oft-repeated observation. But a scholar went further and said that time is even more precious than gold. It is as priceless as life itself, he said. If we lose wealth, we can work hard, save a significant portion of our earnings and become wealthy again. But if we lose life, can we regain it? That is why this scholar compared time to life. Time can be divided into past, present and future. The past is like an expired cheque. The present is like cash in your hands. The future should be our focus, for our efforts can lead to a successful future, said R. Narayanan in a discourse. Determination will help us accomplish many things. We should not miss the proper time to do something. Whatever is done when it should be done, will definitely yield the desired results. Is anything impossible, if done at the proper time, asks Thiruvalluvar. If you decide to do something, and are firm in your resolve, then you will be successful, says another kural (verse). Whatever we set about doing, must be done with careful planning. Planning helps us save time, because it makes it possible for us to be organised. The Thirukkural sounds a note of caution. Thiruvalluvar says that we must think before we act. It is foolish to be hasty in our actions and then ponder over them later on. It is not wrong to have great aspirations. You can even aspire to rule the world, and achieve this goal too, if you act at the right time and in the right manner. The stork waits near the river bank, while shoals of small fish swim by. The bird may be hungry, but it does not catch these fish. It waits until a big fish comes by. We should be like the stork, waiting patiently for the right moment, and then act, to reap the maximum benefit.

Minister KN Nehru spreading slander against me: Edappadi Palaniswami

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday charged Municipal Administration Minister KN Nehru of spreading slander against him by portraying his statewide tour - 'Let us protect people, reclaim Tamil Nadu' - in a poor light. In a statement, quoting a verse from Thirukkural which said the right ruler earns, preserves and wisely spends the wealth, Palaniswami said the DMK government has failed to do these for Tamil Nadu, and this is the charge of the people of Tamil Nadu. Thanking the people for their overwhelming response during his first phase of the statewide tour which began on July 7 in Coimbatore, Palaniswami said so far he covered 31 Assembly constituencies by meeting 12.5 lakh people, including farmers, agriculture workers, fishermen, entrepreneurs, unemployed youth, women's self help groups, students, doctors, and many others. 'No matter how much you (DMK) attempt to mislead the people, my visit will continue. In 2026, the AIADMK will secure a massive victory and offer good governance that reflects the people's true aspirations. All those responsible for misrule will be held accountable,' Palaniswami said.

Kural chaos: Guv's mementos contained couplet that isn't

Chennai: Raj Bhavan has been dragged into controversy, this time related to Thirukkural. Mementos given by Governor R N Ravi at an event organised at Raj Bhavan on Sunday for a doctors' day function had a couplet inscribed on them that was not a Thirukkural. The governor praised doctors for their service and distributed mementos to them, with a couplet inscribed as 'Kural 944'.Thirukkural 944, which is 'Atradhu Arindhu Kataippitiththu Maaralla Thuykka Thuvarap Pasiththu', deals with medicine. But words from Kural 123, which is 'Serivarindhu Seermai Payakkum Arivarindhu Aatrin Adangap Perin', were taken and presented as 'Serukkarundhu Seermai Payakkum Maruppodu Mannunchol Melvaya Pattu'. Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram said in a post on X, "Similar to adorning a saffron robe, printing a fake Thirukkural is an insult to Thiruvalluvar which cannot be forgiven. Fake attire and now fake Thirukkural. Where will it lead to?" This was in reference to Ravi adorning Thiruvalluvar with saffron robe, evoking ire of some political parties . Coimbatore-based VGM Hospital chairman Dr V G Mohan Prasad defended Raj Bhavan. "We are responsible for the mistake. Neither governor nor the Raj Bhavan had any knowledge of the error," he said. "We have written a letter of apology to the governor," Mohan said, as steps were taken to redistribute the mementos with the correct Thirukkural.
