Coimbatore corporation to issue closure notice to tea stall at Race Course

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation is expected to issue a closure notice on Friday to INDCO'S TEA HOUSE , a franchise of Indcoserve Cooperative Small Scale Tea Producers Association , at Race Course, as its licence period expired on March 31, 2025. The tea shop is still functioning despite the expiration of the licence. In January 2025, the corporation provided documents related to the tea shop to city-based activist S P Thiyagarajan after he filed an RTI. Thiyagarajan said, "The report said the stall was granted permission for just 225 sq ft with a monthly rent of Rs 10,560. As per the conditions of the license, if the shopkeeper exceeds the allocated space, the license will be cancelled immediately without any notice." "As per condition no. 9, only products of the Indcoserve should be sold. But none of the conditions were followed. The adjacent public parking space has been encroached on and yet they had sought for the renewal of licence. The civic body should remove the stall for violating norms in the city's prime location," he added. Anti-Corruption Movement, Coimbatore district unit, had also written to the corporation, highlighting the tea stall's violations. It has taken the matter to the notice of the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA).
