Toda community members in the Nilgiris sensitised to the need to preserve their culture

More than 20 members of the indigenous Toda community took part in a project aimed at the 'Revitalisation of the Toda language in prose, song and cultural ecology.' As part of the initiative, the members were given an overview of their traditional dress and rituals and how over time, many techniques are being lost. Speaking at the event, held with the involvement of the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu's Tholkudi scheme, Dr. Tarun Chhabra, founder of the Nilgiris Kuttawady Center, said that the scheme by the government was launched to preserve the culture and tradition of indigenous communities from across Tamil Nadu. 'There are four major distinguishing features that characterise each community, their physical characteristics, their language, dress and culture,' he said, emphasising the importance of preserving the traditional Toda language. Mr. Chhabra, who is the author of the book, 'The Toda Landscape : Explorations in Cultural Ecology,' is an eminent expert on the Toda community, and spoke of the need for the community to take pride in their language. 'I also see that Todas are now adopting non-Toda second names to fit in with the mainstream. Each of you is named after a mountain, peak, temple, stream or other facet that comprises Toda life. It is important that the community takes pride in its culture, traditions and its languages,' he said. He then made a presentation about Toda dress and their rituals and spoke of the different embroidery techniques used in traditional Toda garments such as embroidered cloaks, known as poothkull(zh)y and kefehnaarr in the Toda tongue. The workshop, which will give the Todas a training course on their traditional embroidery techniques, was also used as a tool to speak about quickly disappearing Toda practices such as body-tattooing. Also present at the event was Nilgiris Collector, Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru. Speaking at the event, the Collector told members of the community that it was imperative that their culture and traditions were passed down to future generations. 'Despite the huge changes that are transpiring, the Todas are an ever-present entity in the Nilgiris,' said Ms. Tanneeru, adding that it was the responsibility of the community to help in its preservation. She appealed to the community to bring their children to future workshops so that they too would learn about their culture and traditions.

After four-year wait, TAHDCO to give Irulars new homes by Aug 15

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO) Managing Director KS Kandasamy on Thursday inspected Mannur and Katrambakkam villages in Kancheepuram, where the administration is building 44 and 36 houses respectively for Irular families at Rs 4.05 crore. The beneficiaries were given land titles in November 2021 and April 2022 and have been waiting for the administration to help build homes, while their families faced floods, rodents and snakes in temporary hutments near waterbodies. Besides officials, members of the Sriperumbudur Irular Makkal Nala Sangam were also present at the event where TAHDCO MD Kandasamy assured that the houses would be handed over to the beneficiaries by August 15. The houses are being constructed under the 'Tholkudi' scheme with funding from TAHDCO. Kandasamy also instructed the officials to construct the houses as per the requirements of the beneficiaries. 'A senior IAS officer gave us an assurance that the promises will be delivered on,' said Kavitha Thandoni, said a beneficiary in Mannur.

Housing construction begins for Irular families in Mannur after three years, with funding from TAHDCO

CHENNAI: Three years after 44 Irular tribal families in Sriperumbudur taluk were given land titles in Mannur village, the Kancheepuram district administration has finally initiated construction of houses by conducting a Bhumi pooja last week. These families are currently living in hutments near waterbodies without access to electricity, basic sanitation, and in constant fear of attacks by snakes or bugs. Since November 2021, 88 families who were awarded land titles have been waiting for the district administration to construct homes for them. A senior official from the Tamil Nadu's Tribal Welfare department confirmed that the construction would begin in a week at two sites - at Mannur, near the office of a global logistics firm, and Katrambakkam. 'The funds for construction would be availed from the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO) under the Tholkudi scheme for tribals,' the senior official said. The assurance comes as a great relief to the Irular families as there were talks of the houses being constructed under the Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam scheme, where the beneficiaries would have to contribute a portion of the funds. The officials have promised to start construction of the homes on May 1 and complete it by October before the North-East Monsoon, said Kavitha Thandoni, President of Sriperumbudur Irular Makkal Nala Sangam (Peoples welfare organisation), and daughter of one of the beneficiaries at Mannur village. The announcement comes following regular protests in front of local taluk officials last month due to their alleged indifference in the issue. They had also met with Tamil Nadu Tribal Welfare director S Annadurai to highlight their grievances.
