Brynamman Cinema crowned Best Welsh Cinema in 2025

Brynamman Public Hall Cinema, which was first opened in 1926, won Best Welsh Cinema. Apart from being uniquely located in a village, the cinema prides itself on its old school setup. There are 700 seats in the auditorium. (Image: Thomas Smith) General manager at Brynamman Cinema, Mr Thomas Smith said: 'It's incredible. It's come out of the blue and we weren't expecting it. It's incredible to be recognised. We have had a great response from people in the area, and we have lots of local support. 'This award puts Brynamman on the map. We have regular customers and there are people who travel from Swansea to get a real cinema experience. 'We have over 700 seats, a 10-metre screen and big theatre curtains, besides an ice cream intermission. That used to be the norm in cinemas, and we have kept the spirit of intermission alive. We try to provide a personal experience. 'We have been able to survive all the ups and downs thanks to our team of volunteers. We are one of the only village cinemas around and we're in a special position. It feels wonderful.' A 'real cinema experience' is on offer. (Image: Thomas Smith) Due to Brynamman Cinema's prestige, Mr Smith has revealed how other businesses in the village also benefit from the added footfall. Mr Smith continued: 'All the cinemas around us are based in towns. We are not in a populated area and yet we serve the Amman Valley. We are one of the few attractions in Brynamman and it's magical and we are aware that people come here because of all these extras. 'I have worked at the cinema since I was 14 years old, so I've been here for over 16 years. I started in the projection room and have transitioned into the digital way of doing things. 'All the staff are very proud of what we have achieved. There are times when the cinema is not as busy but winning an award like this gives everyone a massive boost. After all, nowadays, with all the streaming services available, not everyone is a cinema-goer.' Next year Brynamman Cinema will celebrate its 100th anniversary. 'This year we have returned to levels similar to pre-COVID times. Thanks to us currently showing Jurassic World, more people are visiting and hopefully this award will encourage others to visit.'

Mayor of Green Cove Springs suddenly resigns, successor to be appointed Tuesday night

Green Cove Springs is getting a new mayor. The city announced Tuesday that Mayor and City Councilmember Thomas Smith had resigned, effective immediately. In the announcement, the city said Smith's 'evolving work-related obligations have made it no longer possible for him to continue fulfilling the duties of public office," referring to his outside work. In his communication to the city manager, GCS said Mayor Smith expressed his gratitude for the time he was able to serve his neighbors, calling it an 'incredible honor.' Smith was first elected to the Council in April 2022. City Council will choose a new mayor and vice mayor during its regularly scheduled City Council meeting at 6 P.M. tonight. The position of vice mayor is currently held by Councilmember Edward Gaw. A special election will also be held in the future to fill the newly vacated City Council seat. Details on the election for Seat 4 are expected in the near future. 'The City thanks Thomas Smith for his dedication and service to Green Cove Springs and wishes him well in his future endeavors.' >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks]
