On the edge of Ryde Pier is a train station that is used to pick up passengers from ferries, which is why it 'floats' over the sea, and it's just reopened after 10 months of essential upgrades. The tramway was at first horse-drawn, but it was electrified in 1886, making it one of the first electric tramways in the world and later it was developed into a train station. In October 2024, the train station on the pier was closed in order to undergo renovation work. Upgrades were undertaken to ensure the structure could hold new trains that would be added onto the route - for the first time in 30 years. Lots of the track was replaced, steel barriers were installed, weather screens were put in, and it was freshened up with new paint. The station was due to reopen in May 2025, but was delayed until early July 2025 after issues due to storms. The station is a stop on the Island Line train service that operates between Ryde and Shanklin. The journey offers incredible views, and doesn't cost much either - the one-stop trip from Ryde Esplanade to Ryde Pier costs £1.70 and takes two minutes. Tickets from Ryde to the neighbouring town of Shanklin cost £3.90. A pier train station isn't all the town has to offer - the seaside town is so charming that it was even the inspiration behind the Beatles song, Ticket to Ride. One of the most popular spots is Appley Beach - the coastline has long stretches of soft sand, a cafe and playground. Visitors say that the beach gets even bigger at low tide making it ideal for kids and families. And the stretch of beach nearest the village of Seaview is dog-friendly too. One beachgoer wrote on Tripadvisor: "Lovely flat sandy beach for the kids to play without the worry of deep water and then the tide came in around 2-3pm and was so lovely, still super shallow." Ryde is great for shopping, with Union Street lined with boutiques, gift and souvenir shops. If you continue walking, you'll reach Shanklin, which is actually the UK's sunniest town. The town has, on average, the most hours of sunlight per day, according to a new study, looking at which places in the country are the safest bet for a warm day out. The beach at Shanklin is one of the better-regarded stretches of shoreline on the Isle of Wight, with its traditional English seafront promenade adding to the seaside resort experience. If you're a fan of trains and want to compete against others to build your own railway network, I'd recommend Ticket to Ride which is currently 47% off at Amazon right now. But if Dungeons & Dragons is more your speed, the 2024 Player's Handbook is available for just $39 and it includes everything you need to get started. There are many other board and card games to choose from, such as Monopoly, Exploding Kittens and more. In this railway-themed board game, two to five players compete to collect different colored train cards to build on railway routes in North America, a bit like what you do in Monopoly. If, like me, you've sunk hundreds of hours into CDPR's hit role-playing video game, you'll love the Gangs of Night City board game. It's similar to Risk as you and up to three other players compete to conquer the ruthless streets of Night City. You need to be part of one of four gangs, each offering different customization options for diverse strategies and experiences. There are multiple replayable endings, and every choice impacts the narrative. And you can meet characters from Netflix's Edgerunners too — the perfect board game to accompany the show's renewal! Catan is arguably one of the best board games of all time. This highly addictive strategy game for three to four players turns you into hard-nosed settlers, competing to conquer an island. Collect resource cards to build roads, village and cities, but collecting them heavily relies on dice rolls and trading with other players. Oh, and there's a resource-stealing robber too to spice things up. On average, one game takes up to 90 minutes. Are you up to the challenge? Have you recently gotten into Dungeons & Dragons because of Baldur's Gate 3? I don't blame you because so have I. But D&D can be daunting and you may not know where to begin, which is why the 2024 Player's Handbook is a great starting point. It explains classes and subclasses, different types of enemies and combat styles, and features stunning artwork that will immerse you. It'll also help you level up your character creation and become a better Dungeon Master. Pandemic is a fun cooperative game where two to four players must work together to defeat the worldwide affliction. I know none of us want to relive the years of 2020-22 but trust me when I say this game is extremely fun. You're part of the CDC and each player plays a different team member: medic, researcher, and the like. Your competitive edge will come in handy here, as you must act quickly to combat outbreaks around the world. Working together for the good of all. Ever since my partner gifted me the Exploding Kittens card game, I haven't stopped thinking about it, and we play it when we can. This family-friendly card game combines strategy and humor where you must protect your kittens, avoid explosions and outsmart your opponents. This Party Pack Edition comes with 120 cards featuring original, hilarious illustrations by The Oatmeal. My earliest memories of playing board games with my family take me back to all of us huddled around a table playing Monopoly. It's an all-time classic, where up to six players buy, sell and scheme their way to becoming the richest person alive. You can build houses and hotels and trade these if a player offers you a better deal. This edition includes eight classic tokens including a top hat, rubber ducky, battleship and more. The rock icon is set to reunite with his brother Liam for an epic return to the stage this summer, beginning in Cardiff's Principality Stadium, marking their first joint appearance since 2009. Noel is synonymous with the definitive sound of Oasis, but it appears one tune he would not be without hails from a band entirely unlike them. During an episode of the BBC's Desert Island Discs, Noel shared the eight tracks he'd choose to have if he found himself isolated on an island. In a discussion prior to their announced divorce in 2023, Noel spoke with the BBC about why he'd choose to preserve this particular song over the others. He remarked: "I am going to save Be My Baby by The Ronettes because it would make me smile and clench my fists at the same time and think... I still haven't forgiven her for that but I do love her." Noel was referring to an earlier part of the conversation where he shared that his then-wife, Sara, chose 'Be My Baby' for their first dance at their wedding. Even with a history of performing two consecutive nights at Knebworth to a crowd of 250,000, Noel found the prospect of dancing in front of friends and family heavy going. He described how he dreaded the forthcoming dance, saying: "I was dreading that moment coming up, like I have to dance like an adult, and I said just do me one favour, when we get on there, don't show off because I am clearly a northerner, and a man." Yet, when 'Be My Baby' started playing, Noel recounted that Sara became like "Olivia Newton-John". It was actually his daughter, Anais, noticing her father's unease, who orchestrated getting everyone up to dance, thereby easing Noel's discomfort. Preferring to pen tunes rather than jive to them, Noel provided insights into his songwriting process when asked if he could predict a hit. He shared his perspective on music creation, noting: "There is no golden rule but there are kind of little sign posts that you recognise," adding, "If a song comes quickly, it usually means it is good because it has just fallen out of the sky. "Don't Look Back in Anger took, you know, 15 minutes. If I had known that night that that song would live for so long, and become such a thing, I would never have finished it because it would never have been perfect enough to think, 'Oh in 25 years people are going to be playing this at their weddings.' It was just another song." He called Hand in Glove by The Smiths "one of the greatest songs ever" and heaped praise on U2's The Joshua Tree album, adding: "You listen to it now and it is easily one of the greatest batches of songs any band has ever written. So far the cheapest date we've found is July 25 at Wembley, with the lowest cost tickets at £230. Meanwhile, the cheapest price for Cardiff Principality Stadium is July 5, at £290. Everything Counts as School When You're Homeschooling
Homeschooling is the optimal way to personalize your kids' education. Why? Because home education is adaptable, efficient, and practical. Pretty much everything your kids do counts as school. So, let's look at the many everyday learning opportunities you can incorporate into your homeschool days. Options for Elementary-Aged Kids The world is your classroom when you're homeschooling younger kids. The key to providing them with a personalized education is to look outside the curricula—all the practical life skills you work on throughout the day; the clubs, sports, and music lessons; the volunteer experiences; and your kids' hobbies all count as school. During baking lessons, for example, kids work with fractions and measurements. They learn about chemistry as they combine ingredients to create sweet batters and bread dough and gain a better understanding of biology and physics as they observe the properties of yeast. Do you have a young slugger in Little League or a soccer star who just kicked the winning goal? Team and individual sports practice and game play count as physical education; players will naturally learn about proper nutrition and how the muscular system works, as well as teamwork, sportsmanship, responsibility, and leadership. Music class can be as simple as weekly music or voice lessons. Or perhaps your kids enjoy doing arts and crafts. Origami, knitting, drawing, photography, making beaded jewelry, and whittling are all acceptable art activities. And guess what? Those board games you play on family nights can count as school also, as long as your kids are learning something worthwhile. Games such as Monopoly and Cashflow teach financial literacy, while Ticket to Ride and Game of the States teach strategy and geography skills. Mastering Middle School Learning Opportunities Once your kids enter the middle grades, it's wise to gradually give them more freedom. Let them work independently as much as possible and encourage them to dig deeper into their interests. A passion can easily become a half-year or year-long course; kids can conduct research, read books on the topic, and volunteer to gain hands-on experience. Many homeschooling families like to introduce logic at this age. Elementary music and voice lessons can easily evolve into participation in a homeschool band or chorus. If your tween or young teen is a talented thespian, drama club and theater blend language arts and communication skills with creativity and social skills. It's worth noting that even though course credits aren't typically recognized and counted until high school, it's advantageous to work with your college-bound, technically savvy, or workforce-destined student and introduce essential experiences that can act as prerequisites. As an example, our son's passion for video games and great analytical mind led him to learn coding from a book, and he eventually took a game design course. Designing High School Courses and Assigning Credits There are specific requirements for designing courses and assigning credit for your high school students. Use your state homeschool law as a guide to develop everyday activities and experiences into course credit. Typically, a half-year course counts as 0.5 credit and a year-long course counts as 1.0 credit. The Home School Legal Defense Association identifies Visit With this information in mind, you can create a driver education class, an American Sign Language class, or a nature survival class, for example. Your student might also want to shadow someone in the field in which he or she is interested in pursuing. Make Learning Work for Everyone The beauty is in its simplicity. It's no secret that homeschooling is a big responsibility and commitment. It's the most wonderful journey parents can take, but it can also be challenging and stressful. So, when everyday activities or experiences also double as time spent learning, you can relax a little bit and happily check off a few extra lessons on your kids' to-do lists each day. WeGo ‘Ticket to Ride' event kicks off
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — WeGo has invited community members to Ride the WeGo Star Train for free as part of the eleventh annual 'Ticket to Ride' event Friday. From 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., WeGo encourages residents to use public transportation. The event is part of Metro's month-long initiative to promote sustainable transportation options in Davidson County. Community members can ride the WeGo Star train for free from Riverfront Station in downtown Nashville to Donelson Station.
