A Hi-Fi Restaurant and Speakeasy Are About to Jazz Up Abbot Kinney in Venice

On June 18, two restaurant veterans opened Venice's newest hotspots inside a charming converted bungalow. Heather Tierney opened the doors for her new restaurant and vinyl listening bar, Only The Wild Ones, on the ground floor next door to Abbott Kinney's shuttered spot, Atla. It's less than two blocks away from her other restaurant, Butcher's Daughter. Meanwhile, Crudo e Nudo partner Leena Culhane opened an upstairs speakeasy in the same space called Force of Nature that overlooks the adjacent Cook's Garden. Culhane saw the former Neighbor space and immediately reached out to Tierney to suggest it as a possible spot for Only The Wild Ones. Tierney launched the natural wine and music pop-up in the early days of the pandemic next door to Butcher's Daughter, showcasing natural wines, vinyl DJs, and bands. For this iteration, Culhane took over the top floor; Tierney hired Common Wave to create a custom sound system and soundproof the space, which was transformed in six weeks. Culhane served as a wine and design consultant for Only The Wild Ones, while Tierney, who founded the bi-coastal Wanderlust Design, took on a primary design role. 'We opened a pop-up version of [Only The Wild Ones] next to the Butcher's Daughter,' says Tierney. 'We took over the Other Room as an experiment for nine months in 2021, which went really well. I fell in love with high-fidelity sound when creating a system for myself at home, so I wanted to make one at Only The Wild Ones. It's a place you don't have to commit to. You can just pop in. It also has a cool selection of vinyl. We wanted to offer something to the community and share our love for natural wine.' Tierney brought over the chef from Butcher's Daughter, Richard Rea. His plant-based menu includes a lion's mane mushroom raviolo, lentil caviar with a jalapeño crema, house-made truffled potato chips, and a spicy Greek tirokafteri dip with Butcher's Daughter focaccia. Cocktails include twists on classics such as a rose mezcal Negroni; smoked olive Martini, and a celery Collins with Gin, grapefruit, celery soda, and Creme de Peche. Anyone hanging out can select an album or song to play, or catch a set by a live DJ. Hi-fi system with a cocktail. Ashley Randall Photography Those familiar with the neighborhood might recall the short-lived Neighbor, which closed in 2022. The restaurant used the upstairs space as an office, which is now Force of Nature's enchanting room with a balcony. On the verge of closing Isla in 2024, Culhane spent ample time with a tight circle of women restaurant and bar operators. Her idea was a community space that highlights winemakers, distillers, culinary creatives, and artists. Force of Nature put together a wine, cocktail, and non-alcoholic menu in a space that is also used for workshops, special events, or anyone looking to hang out in a chill space with natural wines or drinks from the full bar. Culhane pulled cocktails from different parts of her career (including a stint at the Galley in Santa Monica), but with women-made spirits, including a Vesper made with Conniption Gin and herby Amaricano Bianco liqueur. During opening weekend, Culhane sold out of reservations after releasing a batch on Resy. She's grateful, but has a specific idea in mind for Force of Nature. 'We needed a community space at the beginning of COVID,' says Culhane. 'At that moment in my life, I wanted a place to bring other women forward, which was hard to do for myself. So I pulled my shoulders back and lifted up my chin to support other women.' Only The Wild Ones is open Wednesday through Friday from 4 p.m. to midnight, Saturday from 2 p.m. to midnight, and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Force of Nature is open upstairs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, at 1301 Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice, CA, 90291. Only The Wild Ones reservations are on Resy, as are reservations for Force of Nature. Ring road out as Ottawa council OK's transportation master plan

Article content The city's finalized Transportation Master Plan passed through Ottawa council this week with a plan that sets out transit and road priorities for the next 20 years, but notably excludes a ring road that had been raised at the '11th hour.' Article content College Coun. Laine Johnson introduced a motion at the July 23 council session to 'refocus the city's priorities … (and) make sure we have a clear direction for council and for staff to pursue.' Article content Article content Article content The TMP 'should not have the endorsement of any plan not contemplated by the province,' such as a ring road, Johnson said. Article content Article content The motion called on all levels of government 'to prioritize sustainable, data-driven transportation infrastructure investments' and directed city staff to 'engage with provincial and federal counterparts to obtain up-to-date information on their respective projects in order to assess any impact to projects identified in the TMP.' Article content The motion passed with a 16-8 vote, with notable dissent from Beacon Hill-Cyrville Coun. Tim Tierney, who had raised the idea of a ring road instead of a sixth interprovincial bridge at Kettle Island. Tierney's suggestion for a ring road was raised at the June 26 session of the public works and infrastructure committee, which approved the TMP and initially gave support to Tierney's motion by a 9-2 vote. Article content Article content Several committee members changed their vote as the TMP was brought forward to council. Article content Johnson said in a July 23 social-media post that her motion was designed 'to correct what I considered to be a misstep made during the final minutes of the last public meeting about the plan, which was an eleventh-hour motion to offer specific support to a ring road for Ottawa.' Article content City staff and councillors have been working for six years on the TMP, Johnson wrote. Article content 'We have had surveys, public meetings, consultations with stakeholder groups. Meeting after meeting with our city staff … millions of tax dollars spent on consultant studies, origin-destination studies and public engagement. Article content 'Yet through all of that at no time did we hear about the concept of a ring road. Although it's not a new idea, it is an old idea being made new again, but councils then and since have rejected it.' Article content The TMP builds on previous plans completed in 2003, 2008 and 2013, and was developed based on extensive public feedback, according to city staff. Article content The document establishes priorities and will guide development of the city's transportation system until 2046. Article content It projects an increase of more than 400,000 residents in Ottawa over the next 20 years and 'identifies transportation policies and infrastructure investments to support that growth,' staff said. Article content Tierney said exclusion of a ring road to divert truck and passenger traffic around the city — rather than further congesting the main east-west artery of Highway 417 — was a 'major miss.' Article content 'We have an opportunity that we missed in the past. I've heard time and again since we've had this discussion that traffic is seven days a week,' Tierney said. Article content While the first part of the TMP focused on urban and inner-city areas, the second part 'is about roads, rural (areas) and connectivity throughout the city,' Tierney said. Article content Article content A ring road corridor 'could help assist major issues that are happening in many of our rural villages where we have transport trucks driving through the middle of (town),' he said. Article content 'We don't need another interprovincial bridge that is going to see thousands more vehicles come onto the highway to cut through the middle of our city. And, every time there is an accident, it bleeds out into the downtown area. It really affects the urban area just as much as the rural (areas). Article content 'We need alternatives in this city … and, if we don't address it in this (council) term, we may have to take care of it next term.' Article content Vivi Chi, the city's general manager of planning, real estate and economic development, told Tierney that Ontario's Ministry of Transportation did identify a feasibility study into a ring road as one of many potential projects for Ottawa. Article content 'It's (the province's) initiative, so they will select the timing and the funding for the study, and, if there's implementation, they would be responsible for that,' Chi said. Article content Article content City staff would 'definitely be at the table' if such a study was initiated, Chi said. Article content The city's priority road and transit networks include $3.9 billion in city-led capital projects, including $2.3 billion in transit projects and $1.6 billion in road projects. Article content Priorities include expansion of light-rail transit to Barrhaven and Kanata, a median bus transitway along Baseline Road, widening north-south arteries like the Airport Parkway and numerous modifications to the existing roads and transit network. Article content The process for drafting the TMP began in 2018 and has so far cost $1.5 million in consultant studies, city staff told council. Article content Orléans South-Navan Coun. Catherine Kitts pointed to the impact of numerous 'booming' communities outside the city's urban boundary. Article content 'Quite frankly we are being strangled by the growth of our neighbouring municipalities and it's time to start having a serious conversation about how growth and transportation is being managed outside the limits of the City of Ottawa,' she said. Article content Kitts said the transportation situation in her ward was 'deeply impacting the quality of life … The roads are over-capacity, the transit is inadequate and active transportation is either absent or unsafe.'

WFAN caller confronts Brandon Tierney over ejection from son's Little League game

Brandon Tierney was run from his son's 10U Little League baseball game and apparently did his best Billy Martin impression. The WFAN radio host, who had just returned from vacation, dove into the details after a caller provided an alleged first-hand account of Tierney, an assistant coach of his son's team, being ejected after arguing with a female umpire. 'When the game ended, there was a play at third base,' Tierney said per Awful Announcing, while admitting that this was not 'a great moment.' Brandon Tierney doesn't feel guilty after being thrown out of a Little League game. Getty Images for Fanatics 'We have the video. Unfortunately, there is no replay, he was safe, they called him out…my manager walks on the field to protest the call, he was safe. That was the end of the game. Automatically, aggressive ejection.' A caller had previously called in on July 17 to Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti on the pair's WFAN morning show, saying Tierney 'came out charging' while arguing a play at third base and using language that he should not have used around kids. The caller added that the team appealed the ejection of Tierney, and the manager was also ejected from the game, leaving the team shorthanded. 'The one thing that did bother me about the way it was reported,' Tierney said, 'it made it seem like I treated a female ump differently. I didn't. She wasn't even the one who threw me out.' 'Ridiculous level of aggression,' Tierney claimed of the umpire. 'So, I got thrown out on a technicality. I'm exonerated. I didn't do anything wrong. In the court of public opinion, honestly, I think I'm guilt free. I think I should be set free. It was not waiting in the parking lot to fight an umpire or in his face like Billy Martin, screaming at him with spit flying out. It was, 'Ah, Blue, you missed that.' That was really it. I know you probably want a funnier, sexier version. I didn't even really do anything wrong.' The original caller who told the story added that Tierney's son is a 'hell of a ball player' for his team in Fort Lee.

Celtic Park welcome for Kieran Tierney was 'emotional'

Kieran Tierney admits his Celtic Park welcome left him emotional after he returned to action in Saturday's friendly win over Newcastle. Manager Brendan Rodgers handed Celtic fans the chance to acclaim the left-back when he brought him on for fellow summer signing Hayato Inamura ten minutes into the second half, moments before making another ten substitutions. Although Celtic thrashed the Premier League side 4-0, Tierney's introduction generated the loudest cheer of the day as fans hailed the 28-year-old's return six years after leaving for Arsenal. Describing the moment, Tierney told Celtic TV: 'Amazing. I didn't know what to expect but that was just brilliant. What a feeling. 'I was quite emotional actually, running on to the park like that, but amazing. It was a great day for me.' The Scotland international was quickly into his rhythm and set up the fourth goal when he crossed for Liam Scales to head home after playing a one-two with Reo Hatate. Tierney added: 'They're a great team so it just shows the quality that we have got. When we play like that we can give anyone a game. Some of the goals we scored were brilliant.' Having had to win over some fans after returning to Celtic himself last summer, Rodgers was delighted to see Tierney receive the acclaim. 'I wanted him to get a specific welcome back,' he said. 'Just to get him back here at his age where he could easily be playing at the top end of the Premier League, to get a player of that level and that desire to play for Celtic is amazing for us. 'So, it was a great moment and another connection with him and the support. 'And then you see when he's on there, he's playing against young Anthony Elanga, who's a brilliant signing for Newcastle. 'But Kieran's got pace and power. And then you see how he created the goal with just that explosive speed and the quality. 'So, for us, it's great to have him here and he's still finding his fitness. But it was a great moment for him.' Get all the latest news from around the country Follow STV News Scan the QR code on your mobile device for all the latest news from around the country

Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Rangers fitness issues Rangers are dealing with a number of fitness concerns ahead of their Champions League second qualifying round first leg tie against Panathinaikos at Ibrox on Tuesday. The match against the Greeks will mark the start of the Russell Martin era but the new head coach is confident that his side can overcome the fitness issues that are restricting his choices to get his tenure off to a positive start. Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers are both likely to miss Rangers' Champions League opener against Panathinaikos on Tuesday. | SNS Group 'The adrenaline, the crowd, everything else will help them through,' Martin told Rangers TV. 'I feel like we've got a good enough base to build off and to win a game of football and to prepare us for that. I'm excited about what we're going to see on the pitch. It's by no means going to be complete. We need time to really embed what we want and for the team to really look how we want it. But we need to put in a performance that looks like us and gives us a platform to build off and to win a game. And to excite the crowd and to make them feel like this is going to be a team that they can connect with.' Rangers are likely to start without strikers Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane, who scored 45 goals between them last season. 'They're both a little bit behind the group in terms of fitness,' Martin said. 'Cyriel because of an injury and Hamza because of visa problems. But they're here now and they're working so hard to get back into shape. And they're both going to be ready to help us, which is going to be really important. I'm looking forward to having them fully fit and firing very soon.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Former Wigan and Luton midfielder Thelo Aasgaard is also a fitness doubt for the first leg. 'It's disappointing for him and for us,' Martin said. 'Everything we thought we were getting and more since he's been here has been incredible. His understanding, his athleticism, the power he has, the technical capability, he really is an exciting player for us. Unfortunately, it's a different level of intensity and it's obviously high demands from pre-season. He's picked up just a little something, so he's going to be touch and go. We hope he can be involved, but if not, then we're really hopeful he'll be ready and raring to go for the second one.' Winger Djeidi Gassama is also short of full fitness after arriving from Sheffield Wednesday last week. Martin said: 'He's a little bit behind in terms of fitness because they went back a bit later than us and the pre-season he's had has been a bit disrupted because he was going to be on the move. He's not ready to start the game. But he is totally different to anything we've got. He's unpredictable. He's a fantastic one-on-one specialist. He has real individual talent. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'He has a lot of work to do physically and to get used to the way we're going to work. But already his willingness to do that, how hard he's working to catch up on fitness, has been really brilliant. So he'll be in the squad. He'll definitely be ready to go for the second game. The first game might have to manage his minutes and the expectation, but he's going to help us a lot.' Steven Pressley is under pressure after losing to lower league opposition twice in his opening two matches in charge of Dundee. | SNS Group Steven Pressley pressure Steven Pressley is already a man under pressure after starting his tenure as Dundee manager with back-to-back defeats to lower league opposition in the Premier Sports Cup. Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Alloa followed the same scoreline at home to Airdrie and left Dundee with no chance of Premier Sports Cup progress. Games against Bonnyrigg Rose and Montrose in the coming week are now effectively pre-season fixtures for Dundee with Pressley already under pressure from fans to get things right ahead of the William Hill Premiership opener against Hibernian on August 3. Asked how they respond, Pressley told Dee TV: 'By accepting, by understanding that's not good enough, and as a group, me, the players, have to show resilience and respond to that. It's far from the ideal start, it's not what we wanted, but you have to show character in these moments of time and that's certainly what I expect us to do. They are a very good group. I have said we need reinforcements but that's irrelevant because we have to do better than that.
