Just For Laughs: Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster, Mae Martin to Receive Best Podcast Award
Handsome Podcast hosts Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin are set to be honored at the Just For Laughs comedy festival on Friday. Comedy-driven podcasts, where comedians interview celebrity guests, have become big business in the entertainment world. Comedians Notaro, Feimster and Martin, who launched their audio series targeting an LGBTQ+ fan base in 2023, will receive the podcast of the year trophy at the Just For Laughs awards show from Canadian comic and actor Sabrina Jalees. Podcast co-host Martin in 2023 was also in Montreal to receive the rising comedy star of the year at the Just For Laughs festival. Fest organizers earlier announced that Ryan Reynolds will present the Generation Award to Rob Mac (formerly McElhenney), a fellow executive producer of Welcome to Wrexham. Other prize winners already announced include Roy Wood Jr. presenting a lifetime achievement award to Amazon's Clean Slate comedy co-star George Wallace; and Benito Skinner, known for his online persona Benny Drama and as the creator and star of the Prime Video comedy Overcompensating, will receive a breakout comedy star of the year prize from Mary Beth Barone. The rising comedy star of the year award will go to Hannah Berner, the reality star turned podcaster and stand-up comedian. The Just For Laughs Award Show will be part of the ComedyPRO 2025 industry programming in Montreal. Fest programmers also said Tuesday that Cat Cohen had joined the the awards show lineup as a presenter, while Matthew Broussard will emcee the prize-giving event. First Star Trek: Starfleet Academy trailer knows not to skimp on the Holly Hunter
Look, if you manage to get Holly Hunter to be the star of your new 'Young adults go to Star Trek school and almost certainly do a ton of smooching' TV show, you use her, right? That's certainly the perspective put forward in the trailer for Paramount+'s new Starfleet Academy, which foregrounds itself with Hunter introducing herself to the first class to enroll at the titular academy in more than a century, and then lets her soothing voice walk viewers through the show's cast of ambitious youths. For the record, that's Sandro Rosta as undeclared human student Caleb Mir, Karim Diané as Klingon science guy Jay-Den Kraag, Kerrice Brooks as first-of-her-kind-at-the-Academy Sam, George Hawkins as wannabe captain Darem Reymi, and Bella Shepherd as admiral's daughter Genesis Lythe. The trailer is also careful to show off plenty of returning faces, including Tig Notaro, reprising her role from Star Trek: Discovery, and Robert Picardo, returning to the series as Star Trek: Voyager's The Doctor. (And if that's not enough fan-service for you, the new Academy also apparently has, like, Choose-Your-Own-Adventure exhibits about some of Starfleet's biggest mysteries; hands up if you paused your video on the one about 'The Fate Of Benjamin Sisko, Emissary Of The Prophets.') That's to say nothing of the guy who merits the big 'end of the trailer' reveal: A whistling Paul Giamatti, who'll be playing the season's villain, Nus Braka, a guy who's part-Klingon, part-Tellurite, all 'guy who wears a lot of rings as a personality statement' Starfleet Academy is being co-showrun by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. The ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Trailer Welcomes You Back to School
Star Trek faces an uncertain future at the moment, as shows that helped define its streaming renaissance end one by one, and little is known about what lies on the horizon (especially thanks to current events in our own world). So it's perhaps fitting, then, that the one new show we do know is coming is all about welcoming a new generation back to Star Trek's fundamental ideals after a similar period of uncertainty: Starfleet Academy. To close out today's packed Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Paramount released the first trailer for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Set in the 32nd century after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, the series will follow the first new class of cadets to enroll at the titular academy in San Francisco in over a century, as the Federation rebuilds and reconnects after the cataclysmic events of 'The Burn' from Discovery's third season. The new trailer, aside from being packed with references to all of Star Trek history (from Academy wing names to courses on figures like Captain Sisko), introduces us to a whole host of new and familiar faces as classes begin. The series will be led by Holly Hunter, who plays Nahla Ake, the captain of the U.S.S. Athena, a long-lived half-Lanthanite (the same humanoid species as Strange New Worlds' Commander Pelia, played by Carol Kane) who also serves as the Academy's chancellor. Among the senior staff at the academy, she'll be joined by Discovery's Tig Notaro and Voyager's Robert Picardo, reprising their roles as Jett Reno and the Emergency Medical Hologram simply known as the Doctor, respectively—they'll also be joined in a guest star capacity by Discovery's Mary Wiseman and Oded Fehr as Sylvia Tilly and Admiral Vance, respectively. One new addition to the campus staff is Gina Yashere's Lura Thok, the Athena's first officer as well as Starfleet Academy's cadet master—fascinatingly, a half-Klingon, half-Jem'Hadar, the genetically engineered footsoldiers of the Dominion from Deep Space Nine. Of course, an academy needs students, and Starfleet Academy will follow a whole host of new recruits making their way through training. Here's the rundown: Even if Starfleet Academy is a school-set series, Star Trek still needs a baddie, and the show will have one in the form of Paul Giamatti, cheekily and mysteriously introduced at the end of the trailer. Giamatti plays Nus Braka, a seedy gang leader (and himself another half-Klingon, this time a Klingon/Tellarite hybrid) who has some ominous connections to one of the new cadets at the academy. The first season of Starfleet Academy is set to begin streaming on Paramount+ in early 2026. The show has already been renewed for a second season. Want more io9 news? June is Pride Month, which commemorates and advocates for the LGBTQ community. Here's how to take part in NWA. 🏳️🌈 Saturday – The Momentary in Bentonville is hosting an all-day celebration with food, music and dance plus showings of musicals. And you can picnic on the Green. It's free to attend but a couple of events require additional $15 tickets. 🏳️⚧️ Sunday — NWA Equality is hosting TRANScends, a community conversation intended "to deepen understanding of the challenges, joy and lived experiences of our transgender neighbors and move Northwest Arkansas from awareness to action." 1-5pm at The Jones Center in Springdale. Free but reserve a spot. 🤣 June 12-15 — Eureka Springs' Pride weekend is complete with live music and drag shows. And comedian Tig Notaro is performing a sold out show. 🎤 June 21 — An LGBTQ resource fair plus a sing-along screening of "Rent" will take place from 1-4pm at the Fayetteville Public Library. 💃 June 27-29 — NWA Pride weekend, the state's largest Pride celebration hosted in Fayetteville by Northwest Arkansas Equality, kicks off Friday evening with a trans march and rally down Dickson Street plus a concert from Adore Delano, who competed on "RuPaul's Drag Race."
