Detroit Tigers claim Carlos Hernández off waivers from Phillies to join MLB roster

The Detroit Tigers have added to their bullpen. The Tigers claimed right-handed reliever Carlos Hernández off waivers Monday, June 16, from the Philadelphia Phillies. The 28-year-old doesn't have any minor league options remaining, so he will join the Tigers' active roster for the upcoming game Tuesday, June 17, against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Comerica Park. Advertisement The 40-man roster is now full. Kansas City Royals pitcher Carlos Hernandez (43) delivers the pitch in the ninth inning of the MLB game between the Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024. After claiming Hernández, the Tigers need to make a corresponding move to create space on the 26-man roster. There are two clear options: placing right-handed reliever Will Vest on the 15-day injured list with a right pinky finger injury, or optioning right-handed reliever Tyler Owens to Triple-A Toledo. Vest suffered a pinky injury in the eighth inning Sunday, June 15, but the severity of the injury is unknown. ROSTER MOVE: Tigers designate John Brebbia for assignment, call up RHP Tyler Owens It seems like Hernández could be the replacement. He has a 4.98 ERA in his six-year MLB career, spanning 282 innings. Advertisement In 2025, Hernández posted a 5.26 ERA with the Phillies, allowing 32 hits and 12 walks while recording just 23 strikeouts across 25⅔ innings in 25 relief appearances. The Phillies designated him for assignment Wednesday, June 11, for performance reasons. The one positive: Hernández averages 97.8 mph with his four-seam fastball. Hernández spent his first five seasons with the Kansas City Royals, from 2020-24. This story will be updated. Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold. Detroit Tigers rookie Jackson Jobe will undergo Tommy John surgery, out for 2025 season

BALTIMORE — Detroit Tigers right-hander Jackson Jobe will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The 22-year-old will miss the remainder of the 2025 season. Advertisement The date of the surgery is unknown. The general timeline for a full recovery from Tommy John surgery is anywhere between 12-18 months, which would put Jobe's return in the June 2026-December 2026 range. MORE ABOUT HIM: What Tigers rookie Jackson Jobe did this offseason to become even more unhittable Detroit Tigers pitcher Jackson Jobe walks into the dugout after a pitching change during the fifth inning against the San Francisco Giants at Comerica Park in Detroit on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. As a rookie, Jobe posted a 4.22 ERA with 27 walks and 39 strikeouts across 49 innings in 10 starts in the 2025 season. Detroit Tigers call up Jahmai Jones; Andy Ibáñez optioned to Triple-A Toledo

The Detroit Tigers have added a new player to their active roster. The Tigers called up Jahmai Jones, a 27-year-old outfielder, from Triple-A Toledo, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation who were granted anonymity because the roster moves are not official. The Tigers optioned infielder Andy Ibáñez to the Mud Hens, following his continued struggles against left-handed pitchers. Advertisement Since July 21, 2024, Ibáñez is hitting .200 with a .578 OPS against left-handed pitchers across 136 plate appearances. He has hit just two home runs off lefties — and three total — during the 319-day stretch. MORE ABOUT THIS: Andy Ibáñez struggling vs lefties. That's a big problem for Tigers Detroit Tigers infielder Jahmai Jones walks out of the batting cage after practice during spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland, Fla. on Friday, Feb. 21, 2025. Both Jones and Ibáñez are right-handed hitters with track records of success against left-handed pitchers, so Jones is expected to step into the Ibáñez platoon role — only as an outfielder instead of an infielder. The Tigers need to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Jones, which could result in outfielder Akil Baddoo, currently in Toledo, being designated for assignment. Advertisement In 2025, Jones is hitting .276 with six home runs, 24 walks and 46 strikeouts across 52 games for Triple-A Toledo, posting an .875 OPS. He has made 18 starts in left field, 15 starts in right field and seven starts in center field. Jones has MLB service time in parts of four seasons, hitting .198 with a .535 OPS in 69 games. He has played for the Los Angeles Angels (three games in 2020), Baltimore Orioles (26 games in 2021), Milwaukee Brewers (seven games in 2203) and New York Yankees (33 games in 2024). He had a .238 batting average with the Yankees last season. This story will be updated. Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold. Detroit Tigers prospect Bryce Rainer suffers right shoulder injury in Low-A Lakeland

Detroit Tigers prospect Bryce Rainer suffered a right shoulder injury. The injury occurred Tuesday, June 3, in the fourth inning of a game for Low-A Lakeland, when the 19-year-old drove back into first base on a pickoff attempt. After diving, he rolled onto his back in pain. He was helped off the field and into the dugout by a coach and an athletic trainer. Advertisement It's a right shoulder injury. But the Tigers won't have further updates until Rainer is fully evaluated. MORE ABOUT HIM: Bryce Rainer solves Tigers' shortstop problem if available in 2024 MLB draft Rainer — whom the Tigers selected No. 11 overall in the 2024 draft — is hitting .288 with five home runs, 20 walks and 33 strikeouts in 35 games for Low-A Lakeland, getting all of his defensive reps at shortstop. His average exit velocity is 92.1 mph, which would rank among the top 50 MLB players. The Tigers believe Rainer is their shortstop of the future, as he hits the ball extremely hard and features a strong throwing arm. Advertisement Rainer is the Tigers' No. 3 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. This story will be updated. Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold.
