Chinese brands duke it out for title of Australia's cheapest hybrid SUV

The 2026 Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid is arriving this month with sharp, sub-$30,000 pricing… and it'll run headfirst into another identically priced small hybrid SUV from China. Pricing published on Chery's Australian website shows the Tiggo 4 Hybrid Urban will ring up at $29,990 drive-away when it goes on sale this month, while the Tiggo 4 Hybrid Ultimate will be priced at $34,990 drive-away. In the fine print, Chery mentions this pricing is valid for vehicles ordered from participating dealers between June 13, 2025 and September 30, 2025. That's the same date that sharper pricing for the GWM Haval Jolion Premium Hybrid (pictured below) – also $29,990 drive-away – will end. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Supplied Credit: CarExpert This new offer, detailed by GWM in a press release today, represents a saving of $3000 on the usual drive-away price. It also marks the first time GWM's small hybrid SUV has been available for under $30,000 drive-away. With pricing of $29,990 drive-away for their base hybrid small SUVs, GWM and Chery have managed to undercut arch-rival MG. The rival Chinese brand is currently offering its ZS Hybrid+ Excite for $32,990 drive-away until July 31, 2025. Chery has yet to publish full pricing and specifications for the Tiggo 4 Hybrid, though it says the 1.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrain is good for combined fuel consumption of 5.4L/100km. It has previously confirmed the engine produces 71kW of power and 118Nm of torque, while the electric motor produces 150kW and 310Nm. The Tiggo 4 Hybrid (pictured below) uses a 1.83kWh battery. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Supplied Credit: CarExpert The Tiggo 4 Hybrid Urban commands a price premium of $6000 over its petrol equivalent, while the Hybrid Ultimate carries an $8000 premium. The GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid mates a 70kW/125Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 115kW/250Nm electric motor, for total outputs of 140kW and 375Nm. Combined fuel consumption is 5.1L/100km, beating the Chery by 0.3L/100km. The regular petrol Haval Jolion Premium is currently being offered for $24,990 drive-away, which means the hybrid-powered version – which also brings unique exterior styling – attracts a $5000 premium. Both Chinese-made small hybrid SUVs comfortably undercut the Toyota Yaris Cross GX FWD, which is priced from $30,900 before on-road costs. Chery says Tiggo 4 Hybrid SUV is coming here in July

Chery New Zealand has announced that the Tiggo 4 Hybrid (HEV) model will go on sale here in July. Pricing will kick off at $32,990 plus ORCs. The company recently confirmed pricing for the entry-level Urban and higher spec Ultimate models of Chery Tiggo 4. The base model goes for $24,990 plus ORCs, while the latter ist $29,990 plus ORCs. That makes the former amongst the least expensive new vehicles in New Zealand, and the cheapest SUV. Both models were recently updated for MY26. Changes were new 17- and 18-inch alloy wheel designs, and fresh LED taillights. Moreover, Chery added a light bar that stretches across the tailgate. The Ultimate model adds a wireless phone charger, 360-degree surround view camera, artificial leather seats and colour-selectable ambient lighting. Each features a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 108kW and 210Nm. An HEV model was promised when Chery first indicated it was setting up shop here, and further details are now available. The new series-parallel hybrid has a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, good for 71kW and 118Nm. It combines with a 150kW/310Nm electric motor powered by a 1.83kWh battery to provide a range of around 1000km. Chery claims a combined fuel economy figure of 5.4L/100km, and a zero to 100 time of 9.4sec, sufficient for both city commutes and weekend escapes. The fuel use figure for the non-hybrid is 7.4L/100km (168g CO2/km). Lucas Harris, Chief Commercial Officer, Chery Australia & New Zealand commented: 'Adding hybrid power to our most accessible SUV is a natural next step in making advanced technology available to more Kiwis. 'The Tiggo 4 Hybrid combines smart design, real-world efficiency and unbeatable value – all in one package.' The better-specified Tiggo 4 HEV Ultimate launches with a list price of $37,990 plus ORCs. Full specs will be available around the time of Tiggo 4 HEV's introduction.

2025 Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid will be Australia's cheapest HEV

The 2025 Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid small SUV is scheduled to arrive late next month, and the two-grade lineup has today been priced from $29,990 drive-away. That makes Australia's cheapest SUV nameplate also the most affordable hybrid on sale in Australia. The Tiggo 4 Hybrid undercuts the cheapest Toyota Yaris Hybrid hatch ($28,990 before on-road costs) and GWM Haval Jolion HEV small SUV ($32,990 drive-away). Two variants will be available in Australia from July, including the base Urban ($29,990 D/A) and the flagship Ultimate ($34,990 D/A) – representing a $6000 premium for the electrified drivetrain. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Unlike the recently announced Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid and Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid, the Tiggo 4 Hybrid is not a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) but a series-parallel hybrid like the Yaris Cross Hybrid and Jolion HEV. Both Tiggo 4 Hybrid model grades will use a 71kW/118Nm 1.5-litre petrol engine teamed with an electric motor for combined outputs of 150kW/310Nm driving the front wheels. With a 1.83kWh battery and combined fuel consumption of 5.4L/100km – compared to 7.3L/100km for the petrol-only version – the Tiggo 4 Hybrid has a claimed driving range of 1000km per tank. It also quotes a 9.4-second 0-100km/h acceleration time, which is 1.2 seconds quicker than the petrol version. Chery Australia hasn't announced further specifications for Australia, but the entry-level petrol Tiggo 4 Urban comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, dual 10.25-inch digital displays and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone connectivity. In petrol guise, the Tiggo 4 Ultimate adds 18-inch alloys, heated front seats, a 360-degree surround camera and power sunroof. Standard driver assist tech for the petrol Tiggo 4 includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic assist for both model grades. The Tiggo 4 is currently Chery Australia's best-selling vehicle – making up more than half of its nearly 12,000 sales to the end of May this year – and the nation's fourth-best selling small SUV behind the Hyundai Kona, MG ZS, and the Jolion. While the Kona is priced from $32,500 before on-roads, the cheapest Kona Hybrid starts at $36,500. Meantime, the MG ZS starts at $26,990 drive-away but the cheapest hybrid variant starts at $33,990 drive-away, and the Haval Jolion starts at $26,990 drive-away but the most affordable hybrid version costs $32,990 drive-away. The Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid is now the third hybrid SUV confirmed by the company to arrive next month, with the plug-in Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid mid-size SUV and seven-seat Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid large SUV set to arrive in mid-July, ahead of the Tiggo 4 Hybrid. Full local specification details are expected to be announced ahead of the Tiggo 4 Hybrid's late-July arrival in Australia. MORE: Everything Chery Tiggo 4 Content originally sourced from:
