US men to host friendlies against Australia and Ecuador in October international window

The US men's national team will play friendlies against Ecuador and Australia in the October Fifa international window, the federation announced on Monday. The games will pit the US against two teams that have already sealed their spots in the 2026 World Cup in one of the team's last gatherings before the start of the tournament next summer. The US will host Ecuador first on 10 October at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, with kickoff set for 8.30pm ET. This will be the US men's 16th all-time meeting against Ecuador, with the last meeting coming in 2019. In that match, Gyasi Zardes scored a late winner in a 1-0 victory for the US. Ecuador has been one of the best teams in South America this World Cup cycle, now sitting second in Conmebol qualifying. La Tricolor has not lost a match since 1-0 loss to Brazil in September 2024, winning four and drawing five in that time. Each of Ecuador's last three games have been 0-0 draws (against Chile, Brazil, and Peru). Australia will be the United States' opponent in the second match of the window, due to take place in Commerce City, Colorado at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on 14 October at 9pm ET. The meeting will be the United States' fourth all-time meeting against the Socceroos, with the previous one coming back in 2010 before that year's World Cup in South Africa. The US won that game 3-1, with Edson Buddle and Herculez Gomez scoring for the Americans, and Tim Cahill scoring for Australia. The World Cup qualifying campaign has been a tricky one for Australia, but it was rewarded with an automatic bid to the World Cup last month since the appointment of Tony Popovic as head coach. The Socceroos have reeled off five wins and three draws since he was appointed, culminating in last month's 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia. The United States will aim use the window to further solidify their squad under head coach Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine brought a mostly second-choice roster to this summer's Gold Cup, where the Americans beat weaker opposition all the way to the final, where they were outclassed in a 2-1 loss to regional rivals Mexico. It is thought that Pochettino will use the next two international windows to try to combine the team's bright spots from the summer like Diego Luna and Malik Tillman with some of the first-choice players who sat out the Gold Cup and pre-tournament friendlies – namely Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Antonee Robinson, Tim Weah and others.

Lockheed, Boeing Eye Golden Dome Work

Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) and Boeing (NYSE:BA) have signaled they'll play leading roles in President Trump's proposed $175 billion Golden Dome missile defense initiative, Reuters reports. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 3 Warning Signs with LMT. The programfirst unveiled in Januaryaims to deploy space-based interceptors and directed-energy weapons across a satellite constellation to detect and neutralize incoming threats, though early phases will lean on existing systems. Lockheed's Tim Cahill highlighted PAC-3 missiles, THAAD interceptors and the C2BMC command-and-control network as directly aligned with Golden Dome's needs, while Boeing's Steve Parker noted the company's work on compact laser weapons and PAC-3 guidance seekers as foundational capabilities. Major primes RTX (NYSE:RTX) and L3Harris (NYSE:LHX) also stand to benefit, alongside commercial players like SpaceX and Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR), which bring satellite-launch and AI analytics expertise, and defense startup Anduril (private) with autonomous systems. Congress has discussed an initial $25 billion allocation within a broader $150 billion defense package, but funding remains uncertain amid legislative gridlock. Why it matters: Early contract awards could lock in production ramps and strategic partnerships, giving front-runners a multiyear revenue runway. This article first appeared on GuruFocus.

Mat Ryan thought his Socceroos career was over. Now he is a key Socceroo

Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan was sitting on the bench last November, thinking his international career was finished. Ryan had started life under coach Tony Popovic as an unused substitute for three straight games as Joe Gauci took the lead in their World Cup qualifiers. Ryan could not convince Popovic after struggling for game time at his former club AS Roma, before a hip injury to Gauci reopened the door. Six months on, the 33-year-old nears his 100-cap milestone as Australia attempts to confirm their path to the 2026 tournament in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday (AEST). Australia will earn automatic qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup provided they are not beaten by five goals or more by Saudi Arabia in Jeddah. Ryan is the third-most capped Socceroo, behind fellow keeper Mark Schwarzer (109) and Tim Cahill (108). "There were definitely thoughts that I had there that I could well have played my last game for the national team," Ryan said on Monday. "If you look at perhaps every footballer's career — look at Cristiano Ronaldo and his time at Man United with (Erik) ten Hag there. He wasn't playing there either. "I don't think life or football discriminates against anyone in that regard. "No one is ever entitled to playing for a team. You've got to go out there and earn that right. "'I'm pretty proud of the fact that I've managed to find my way back in." Ryan was on the bench last time the Socceroos suffered a defeat of five or more goals, watching a side coached by Holger Osieck in a 6-0 horror friendly defeat to France in 2013. While Ryan would not be drawn when asked about the memory, he stuck close to the team's week-long "no complacency" message. "At the end of the day, action speaks louder than words," Ryan said. "In life, anything is possible, so you can't take anything for granted. "And by no means is the job finished." Ryan will notch the 100-game milestone after 13 years with the national team, earning his first call-up for the 2014 World Cup qualifier against the Saudis in 2012. "I'm always trying to make the next achievement the best one," Ryan said. "To be in the position we are right now, being a strong one, to go and have it right on our fingertips right now — it gives meaning to us footballers as to why we want to play. "It's the most fulfilling and purposeful thing when you've got that success at your fingertips, and you obviously want to take that final last step to go and achieve it." AAP

Everton's Moyes told players to make sure Goodison finish was positive

LIVERPOOL, England :After all the emotional build-up to Everton's heart-wrenching farewell game at their beloved Goodison Park, manager David Moyes was concerned the moment might be too much for his team. He need not have worried as his players handled the occasion with ease, Iliman Ndiaye scoring twice as they beat relegated Southampton 2-0 on Sunday as the stadium known as the Grand Old Lady hosted its final Premier League game after 133 years. "I was worried today. Everybody's been talking about this for so long," Moyes told reporters. "The scenes outside the stadium were incredible, really. It felt like a club which is needing some big days, some big things in the future. So let's hope this is the start of it. "But I tried to make a point to the players that what couldn't happen was that we left here not finishing it off right. (But) we've done the job which we needed. We've got 45 points (and stand 13th in the league table). "The pressure was off the players today because of that (being clear of relegation), but it was also on because of the occasion, because of the greats who were sitting watching them." Dozens of Everton icons, including Tim Cahill, Wayne Rooney and Duncan Ferguson, were at Goodison to take part in a post-game celebration that had fans in their seats - some singing, others sobbing - long after the final whistle blew. "I've been here a while and I know what it means. It's been a great stadium," said 62-year-old Scot Moyes, who managed Everton from 2002-2013 before rejoining the club this year. "Some questions (about the last game at Goodison) make me think, 'My goodness, this is difficult to take some of these,'" he added. "I think more the feeling that there might be a club which is coming back together, signs that before there was a real breakup of a sort, of a love affair with the supporters, the players, the club, the owners. So we're all trying to get back ... together." Everton end the season at Newcastle United on May 25, and then will move into their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock for the next campaign. The club announced earlier this week that their women's team, who play in the Women's Super League, would make a permanent move to Goodison from next season.
