'Shrinkflation:' Social media in uproar after viral post shows truth about TimTams
TimTams are a popular Aussie pantry staple, but a viral post on Reddit has threatened that status. A Reddit user posted a photo of a packet of TimTams, accusing the company of 'Tim Tam Shrinkflation." He said it is disappointing that the number of TimTams that had been supplied were shrinking. 'Probably been mentioned before but it's disappointing to see that you only get 9 Tim Tam's to a pack these days," he said. 'I worked out it's 42% empty space inside. And without the plastic spaces in-between each bikky, you could fit about 17 in total.' reported that people were not happy with the revelation. 'They should make it illegal for companies to sell half-serving packs,' said one person. 'I don't buy them anymore because of the price,' said another. 'Tim Sham,' a third joked. Other users have said that the chocolates have always been packed that way. 'If you look at all the different flavours, you will see a bunch of different package sizes. They generally (but not always) do this so that they can keep the price per pack the same,' one commenter pointed out. 'Special flavoured Tim Tams are typically reduced in size to 175g (see also the deluxe flavour),' another agreed. 'You get less with the special varieties, it's always been this way,' said a third. In a statement, manufacturers Arnott confirmed that TimTams had been packed that way. "The Tim Tam family is comprised of several ranges. Each range contains a different number of biscuits and always has," a spokesperson told Kidspot. "Tim Tam Chewy Caramel has been a fixture in the range for a number of decades now and has always come with nine biscuits per pack. "The number of biscuits in each pack, and price differences, reflect the cost and complexity of ingredients contained in each pack. "To help consumers avoid any potential confusion, the gram size and number of biscuits are clearly displayed on the front of each pack." The issue of shrinkflation, where the cost remains the same, but the amount of product shrinks was first raised in the federal election, with prime minister Anthony Albanese saying that if he was reelected, Labor would introduce legislation to crack down on the practice. At the time, Mr Albanese said supermarkets were "taking the piss."

Tim Tams are known for their crisp biscuit layers, smooth chocolate coating and creamy chocolate filling. The brand was first introduced by Australian company Arnott's Biscuits in 1964. Ian Norris, the inventor of the biscuit, discovered the Penguin during a trip to Britain and set out to 'make a better one', according to The Sydney Morning Herald. Reactions from UK shoppers have been mixed. One reviewer on Tesco's website called them "basically a penguin biscuit with cheap strange tasting chocolate". While another wrote: "Far better than a penguin. Hurrah for the new trade agreement with Australia." Tesco is selling a 163g pack of Tim Tam Original Chocolatey Biscuit Bars for £2.50. Sainsbury's and Ocado have matched the price, while Waitrose is offering it slightly cheaper at £2.00. Last year, Cadbury's Aussie selection boxes, featuring items like Scorched Peanut Bars, Caramilk Twirls and Butterscotch Snickers, sold out quickly. And earlier this year, B&M also stocked Mocha Mudcake M&Ms - a flavour typically only available Down Under.

Aussies shocked that the number of Tim Tams in a packet changes with the flavour
Don't miss out on the headlines from Lifestyle. Followed categories will be added to My News. Tim Tams will forever be an Aussie staple. Delicious chocolate biscuits in just about any flavour you can imagine - can it really get any better? However, one Aussie has taken to social media to expose a trend he's noticed in the treat, and it unearthed an even worse fact. Want to join the family? Sign up to our Kidspot newsletter for more stories like this. Image: Reddit. RELATED: Fruit shop's stern sign baffles shoppers 'It's disappointing to see' An Aussie Reddit user has taken to the platform to expose the shrinking size of Tim Tam packets. Showcasing a packet of the (delicious) Chewy Caramel flavour, he said there's now only nine in it, with a whopping 42% empty space. 'Tim Tam Shrinkflation,' he said in the post. 'Probably been mentioned before but it's disappointing to see that you only get 9 Tim Tam's to a pack these days. 'I worked out it's 42% empty space inside. And without the plastic spaces in-between each bikky, you could fit about 17 in total.' 'Tim Sham!' Commenters on the post thought it was slack. 'They should make it illegal for companies to sell half-serving packs,' said one person. 'I don't buy them anymore because of the price,' said another. 'Tim Sham,' a third joked. But, others exposed that it's actually always been this way - we just haven't noticed. It's unAustralian! And, a quick look at Woolies proves that this is correct. Despite all ringing in at $6, an Original packet of Tim Tams contains 11 biscuits, while the Double Coat contains just 9 - as do the Chewy Caramel and White Chocolate flavours. The Dark Chocolate flavour contains 11 biscuits, again $6. However, once you step up to the deluxe range, including Salted Caramel Brownie, Dark Choc Mint, Cafe Latte and Decadent Triple Choc, your $6.50 will only buy you 8 biscuits. The Gluten Free Tim Tams will currently set you back $4.95 for just 7 biscuits. It's about as unAustralian as it gets. So, next time you set out to buy Tim Tams, keep bang for your buck in mind - or if you have a group of friends to share with, maybe opt for the deluxe range for a greater chance of an equal split. Aussie biscuit hailed ‘10/10' is finally available in the UK
In March 2024, the UK was treated to 'Aussie gold' as a snack from down under made its way onto supermarket shelves. Tim Tams, which feature crunchy biscuit and a cream filling all covered in a smooth chocolatey coating, launched here for the very first time, landing in Waitrose. Prior to this, Australians had been enjoying the sweet treat since 1964, when it was introduced by biscuit company Arnott's. In the UK, Tim Tams have been sold in original, dark chocolate and chewy caramel flavours over the last year, but now a new flavour has hit the market and it's one fans have hailed as '10/10', 'a dream' and 'the best'. Shoppers at Tesco can now get their hands on Sweet & Salty Tim Tam biscuits – a unique product inspired by another iconic Australian snack. Those who can't choose between sweet and savoury foods won't have to as these combine the classic Tim Tam fillings, with a savoury cracker nestled between the layers. In Australia, these crackers are inspired by Jatz biscuits, also made by Arnott's, which look rather similar to a Ritz biscuit. The Sweet & Salty flavour first began as an April Fools prank on social media, that caused such a stir that Tim Tam made it the real deal in 2024. Finally, the product has made its way here, with limited-edition packs selling for £2.50 in Tesco supermarkets, while stocks last. Talyah Falabella, Tim Tam International Marketing Manager, says: 'Tim Tam has been Australia's favourite chocolatey biscuit for over 60 years, and we're excited to bring this new, even more irresistible flavour combination to the UK. 'This biscuit was originally inspired by an April Fools' prank on social that went viral. The demand from consumers to make this into a real product was so high we just had to make it a reality.; She added: 'Tim Tam Sweet & Salty provides the ultimate indulgence for sweet and salty lovers to enjoy by combining 2 favourite flavours together to create one irresistible biscuit.' On Instagram, a user named @staceye__50w said: 'Seriously the best Tim Tam I have ever had 10/10.' More Trending While over on Reddit, u/oldMiseryGuts posted: 'This is my dream biscuit.'
