Red Bulls in talks to bring in Timo Werner from RB Leipzig amid injury woes

The Red Bulls have been in talks to bring over German international Timo Werner to New York from RB Leipzig, according to multiple reports. A deal has not been reached between the two sides, but there appears to be optimism that an agreement will come together to bring Werner to MLS. The German winger has been on the Red Bulls' radar for some time and even had the option of joining the team last summer, The Athletic reported. REUTERS Talks to bring Werner have been ongoing for some time, the outlet also reported, and it would bring the 29-year-old back together with former Leipzig teammate Emil Forsberg, who moved stateside last year to join the Red Bulls. Werner spent the past 18 months on loan with Tottenham Hotspur, where he saw his role decrease over time. He helped Leipzig win the DFB-Pokal in 2023, marking the first trophy the club had won in its history. He first joined Leipzig in 2016 in a move from Stuttgart and went on to score 78 goals in 127 Bundesliga appearances, eventually making the jump to Premier League side Chelsea in 2020. Werner was part of the team that won the 2021 Champions League final. He returned to Leipzig in 2022 and moved to Tottenham on loan at the start of the 2024 calendar year. While Werner has seen a bit of a fall from grace, he would be a big addition for a Red Bulls team that's sitting seventh in the Eastern Conference and has seen several players leave their latest match due to injuries. The Red Bulls are coming off a run to the MLS Cup, which ended with a loss to the LA Galaxy, and an active offseason that saw them bring in Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who has been one of the top scorers in the league. Werner is not the only player the Red Bulls are in talks with. The team has been in advanced talks with Swedish midfielder Gustav Berggren, amNewYork reported earlier this week.

BREAKING NEWS Former Tottenham and Chelsea striker Timo Werner in discussions with move to MLS

The New York Red Bulls are in the process of negotiating a deal for German striker Timo Werner from sister club RB Leipzig. A source confirmed to that RBNY is in ongoing discussions with the 29-year-old striker, who has spent the last two seasons on loan with Tottenham Hotspur. However, nothing has yet been finalized to secure a move stateside for the Stuttgart native just yet. Werner is the all-time leading scorer for Die Roten Bullen. However, with the club currently possessing strikers like Benjamin Sesko (linked with various Premier League moves) and Lois Openda, Leipzig can afford to move on from the former Chelsea man. As for New York, the club currently sits 7th in MLS 's Eastern Conference and 11th overall under the tutelage of head coach Sandro Schwarz. The club has done well on the attacking end - bagging 30 goals (good for 7th in the league overall) behind a forward group featuring former Bayern striker Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting. This potential move for Werner, first reported by Tom Boger, mirrors a similar move made before the 2024 season, when RBNY transferred attacking midfielder Emil Forsberg from Germany. After moving to the Saxony-based club from VfB Stuttgart in 2016, Werner became a deadly force in Leipzig's first years of top-flight German football - bagging 95 goals across 159 appearances in his first stint at the club. He then made a big-money move to Chelsea - scoring 23 goals in 89 appearances over a period of instability at Stamford Bridge. Werner returned to Leipzig in the 2022-23 season and played there for part of the 2023-24 season (adding 18 goals in 54 appearances to his total) before embarking on an 18-month loan spell at Tottenham. He scored three goals in 41 appearances for the north London club.

New York Red Bulls in talks over Timo Werner move

The New York Red Bulls are engaged in talks over a move for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner. Werner, 29, has 57 caps for Germany and has spent the last 18 months on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, but is surplus to requirements at Leipzig and will be allowed to leave. No agreement has been reached yet, but both sides are optimistic that a deal can be concluded this summer. Advertisement Werner has actually been a long-time target for the RBNY and had the option of joining the club in the summer of 2024. It's understood that negotiations have been underway for some months and that Werner would be keen on a move to MLS, where he would reunite with his former Leipzig teammate, Emil Forsberg. A wide forward, Werner joined Leipzig from Stuttgart in 2016 and scored 78 goals in 127 Bundesliga appearances before to earn a move to Chelsea in 2020, with whom he won the Champions League in 2021. He rejoined Leipzig in 2022, earning a recall to the German national team, and was part of the side that won the DFB-Pokal in 2023, the first trophy in the club's history. But after falling out of favour at Red Bull Arena, he joined Tottenham on loan in January 2024. That loan was then extended by a further year, during which Werner was part of the Spurs team that won the Europa League under Ange Postecoglou. Last season saw the Red Bulls reach MLS Cup for the first time since 2008, falling to fellow founding member LA Galaxy. This winter the club signed Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who has been the team's starting striker. Werner projects to fit in nicely on the left of the forward line, with Scotland international Lewis Morgan on the right and Forsberg pulling the strings beneath. At the midpoint of the 2025 season, New York sits 7th in the Eastern Conference, narrowly in the playoff places. It's unclear whether New York has Werner's 'discovery rights', an MLS mechanism to prevent clubs from up-bidding one another for talent from outside of the league. Should New York need to obtain those rights from another club, they have plenty of allocation money available; as of February 28, their ledger sat at nearly $1.7 million of the league-issued currency.

Postecoglou's time at the top 'not finished'

Ange Postecoglou has gone and although sorry, I am not even slightly surprised - it has been an awful domestic season for Spurs. I do not however think Ange's time at the top is finished, though he might have to look for a progressive continental club to reignite his CV is very good and that Europa League triumph for Spurs can never be taken away. He could also argue that his methods and style were hampered by a lack of backing in the transfer cannot play high tempo 'Ange Ball' unless you have a very deep squad with real quality, youth and energy in reserve. The players he wanted and needed could not be acquired by the club. Had he got Conor Gallagher as he wanted, it could have made a huge difference. Gallagher was born for 'Ange Ball' and would have helped everyone else around lift their is also the fact that Postecoglou wanted to buy Eberechi Eze and got Timo Werner on loan instead. I was going to explain this disparity further but if you know football at all, you have got the point already.I think Ange's ideals mirror the way the game is evolving. His coaching ethos is closer to Paris St-Germain than those languishing in the past overplaying post-Pep course, this idea will be laughed at right now, but I recall being one of very few that thought Manchester United were mad to get rid of David Moyes. Spurs have lost a good coach, a far better one than most people think he is just up to read more from Pat Nevin in his Football Extra newsletter
