Seize the moment: PBK tells GPS to push for full MA63 implementation amid federal instability
Ting says the ruling coalition in Sarawak should leverage the current advantage of 'timing, geography, and unity' to pressure the federal government into meaningful action. MIRI (July 18): Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) has called on Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to seize the current national political turbulence as an opportunity to restore Sarawak's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). PBK Miri Division chairman and Supreme Council organising secretary Leslie Ting Siong Ngiap said the ruling coalition in Sarawak should leverage the current advantage of 'timing, geography, and unity' to pressure the federal government into meaningful action. In a statement yesterday, Ting highlighted the upcoming MA63 Implementation Action Council meeting, scheduled for Sept 12, 2025, during which Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to make decisions on Sarawak's demands under the agreement. 'I call on GPS to use its support for Anwar as a bargaining chip to demand the unconditional return of Sarawak's rights and sovereignty as outlined in MA63. The outcome of the September 12 meeting could bring good news for Sarawak,' he said. As such, he said GPS should press for constitutional guarantees based on MA63 and the 1962 Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report to restore Sarawak's entitlement to one-third of parliamentary seats. He argued that this approach would be 'far more effective and realistic' than the Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP) leadership's view that increasing state seats would pave the way for more parliamentary representation. The PBK leader cited recent political instability in Peninsular Malaysia ― including federal government crises, internal conflicts among peninsular parties, and movements to oust the Prime Minister ― as creating a favourable window for Sarawak. 'The Sarawak Government should seize this rare alignment of timing, geography, and unity to apply pressure and demand unconditional implementation of MA63, including the return of Sarawak's ownership over natural resources, sovereignty in education, healthcare, and taxation, and the constitutional increase of Sarawak's parliamentary seats,' Ting said. He pointed to the current national political landscape, which has been rocked by allegations of judicial interference against the Prime Minister, with multiple parties demanding his resignation and calling for a Royal Commission of Inquiry. Former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has also urged Members of Parliament to table a vote of no confidence against Anwar in the Dewan Rakyat, increasing the likelihood of such a motion in the upcoming parliamentary session and putting the unity government at risk. Ting also noted the fallout with former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who along with eight other PKR backbenchers, has reportedly criticised the Prime Minister, threatening to destabilise Anwar's leadership and the Madani Government. He argued that if the nine MPs withdrew their support, the government's parliamentary majority would shrink from 153 to 144 seats, positioning GPS with its 22 seats as kingmaker once again. 'This would put GPS in the position of holding the key to Anwar's survival as Prime Minister,' Ting said. Anwar has met with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in Putrajaya on July 14, underscoring the importance of close and strategic collaboration between federal and state governments, particularly with Sabah and Sarawak. 'This clearly reflects Anwar's urgent need for Sarawak's support to stabilise his position and preserve his administration.' gps lead MA63 PBK seize the moment

Of the total, RM1.55 million was disbursed to 137 recipients under the Special Project Allocation (PPK), while another RM660,000 went to 15 recipients under the Special Allocation by Minister (PKM). Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP and Dudong assemblyman, was represented by his special duties officer Agatha Ting during the cheque presentation ceremony held at the United Chinese Association (UCA) Sibu hall. In delivering his speech through Ting, Tiong reminded all recipients that public funds must not be wasted or used for personal gain. 'I hope these funds will be used properly and not just for the sake of spending, but to truly benefit the community. 'Every sen must go for something meaningful, not wasted or personal advantages,' he said. He added that recipients are required to submit a full report on how the funds are used as a condition for any future support. 'So you must submit your report. If there's no report, how can you get another round of support? 'I want to help, but you must also do your part. Be accountable. Only then I can continue to justify giving more funding to support your organisations,' he said. Aside from the cheque allocations, five laptops and printers were presented to longhouse residents, along with 10 hampers for local youth members. Also in attendance were Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Dudong Division chairman Datuk Teo Boon Siew and PDP Pelawan chairman Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong. funds Sibu Tiong King Sing

PBK: Additional S'wak DUN seats not commensurating with population growth
Ting (centre), flanked by PBK Miri secretary Eric Ngieng and treasurer Devora Chung, in a photocall. MIRI (July 12): Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) has called the proposed addition of 17 State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats as 'unreasonable and unnecessary' as it does not commensurate with Sarawak's population growth. PBK Miri chief Leslie Ting said based on figures from the Department of Statistics Malaysia, Sarawak only experienced a six per cent growth in population over the past 10 years. 'Therefore, the (proposed) increase in the number of DUN seats by 17 per cent is not commensurate with the population growth in Sarawak,' he told a press conference here Thursday. The DUN, on July 7, passed the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Membership Composition) Bill 2025 to raise the number of state constituencies from 82 to 99. On a separate matter, Ting said PBK would either go solo in the next state election or seek to form an alliance with other 'like-minded' local political parties. At the same time, he called upon Pakatan Harapan (PH) to 'leave the political scene in Sarawak', accusing the coalition led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of failing to deliver on their election pledges and meet the aspirations of Sarawakians. 'PH Sarawak should dissolve and its leaders join PBK to enable the Opposition to fare better against Gabungan Parti Sarawak in state elections,' he said. additional DUN seats lead PBK

Sibu reinforces role as cultural hub at Borneo Cultural Festival 2025
Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar (left) presents a souvenir to Ting at the conclusion of tonight's event. SIBU (July 11) : The Cultural Night of the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) 2025 was more than a showcase of traditional performances and colourful costumes – it highlighted Sibu's growing stature as a cultural hub for the Borneo region, said State Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang. In a speech read by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting, Tiang described the festival as a platform that strengthens cultural resilience and unites communities across borders. 'Sibu is more than the gateway to Central Sarawak. It is the cultural heartbeat of Borneo,' he said during BCF 2025 Cultural Night tonight. The evening featured a vibrant programme of traditional music, dance, and crafts, with performances by cultural troupes from across Sarawak and international guests from West Java, Indonesia. The presence of foreign delegations was seen as a sign of Sibu's rising prominence in regional cultural diplomacy. 'Tonight, we are not only witnessing performances. We are witnessing stories of identity, resilience and beauty expressions that connect generations and communities. 'Culture is not a luxury. It is our legacy,' Ting said. He urged Sarawakians to view culture as a living heritage that must be preserved and passed down, especially amid globalisation and rapid digital change. 'Let this festival be more than a celebration. Let it be a call to action, a shared commitment to ensure our cultural heritage remains part of our future, not just our past,' Ting added. The night's performances reflected Sarawak's rich ethnic diversity, including Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Malay, Melanau, and Chinese traditions. Participation from Indonesian groups added a spirit of cross-cultural appreciation. Also present were Lanang MP Alice Lau, SMC Deputy Chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley, Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Joshua Ting, Acting Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia Musa Derek Sairwona, Sibu District Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, Deputy Organising Chairman Cr Michelle Law, and other invited guests. The Borneo Cultural Festival continues through the weekend, featuring themed nights dedicated to various ethnic groups, culinary showcases, and cultural exhibitions.
