‘Form Six, not a last resort'

A TOTAL of 14 Form Six centres across three categories - Form Six Colleges, Mod Two and Mod Three Centres - have been awarded RM80,000 in incentives. This was in recognition of their top performance in the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) 2024 examinations. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the selection was based on the centres' average grade point achievements in the examinations. 'What's most important to highlight is that these are regular national schools - not premium schools - but they have shown outstanding improvements in their STPM results. 'Despite limited resources and repeated challenges, their spirit and performance are what we must celebrate,' she said during an award presentation ceremony for STPM 2024 top scorers in Selayang, Selangor, on June 24. The Education Ministry, said Fadhlina, is stepping up efforts to ensure that Form Six is no longer seen as a last resort, but as a strategic path to higher education. 'This is part of our broader commitment to strengthening the Form Six pathway for all students, and to ensure it continues to be a primary choice after the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM),' she explained. To drive this push, Fadhlina said the ministry is implementing several initiatives (see infographic) to revitalise Form Six - not only to enrich the academic experience but also to offer financial aid and leadership development opportunities. She said that to strengthen instruction, the ministry will work with the Malaysian Examinations Council (MPM) to provide corporate social responsibility (CSR)-based teacher training. 'We are conducting CSR-based training for Form Six teachers to improve the quality of teaching and learning, so that content delivery becomes more effective. 'This initiative will involve cooperation among divisions in the Education Ministry, particularly the Daily School Management Division and MPM, to ensure that everyone involved - students and teachers – receives attention,' she said. Regarding financial aid, Fadhlina said a RM100 monthly scholarship from Farm Fresh Berhad is being offered to 500 selected B40 students across 10 states, running until December this year. She added that to ease the financial burden on parents and motivate students, Form Six students are eligible to receive the RM150 Early Schooling Aid (BAP), previously limited to students from Year One to Form Five. 'The first phase of distribution was completed in February, involving nearly RM7mil,' she said, adding that the next phase will begin on Aug 1, with an estimated allocation of RM7.8mil. Immersive learning Fadhlina expressed the ministry's hope to expand the pilot programme placing Form Six students in public universities and to encourage more universities to participate. Currently, the programme is run at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). 'Students live on campus, access all facilities, join campus programmes, and benefit from digital and technological resources. 'Although they will still sit for the STPM examinations as usual, the advantage is that they are placed inside these universities,' she said. Fadhlina also announced the formation of the Form Six Madani generation representative council under her purview. 'We are streamlining the Form Six council, where all student associations will operate under its umbrella,' she said. Fadhlina added that through this effort, the ministry aims to build a Form Six leadership team, particularly to nurture the next generation of national leaders. 'These students will be given the opportunity to be with me and experience the leadership process through an internship programme we call 'Sanggar Bitara',' she said. Post-STPM options Fadhlina said Form Six graduates are eligible to apply for the Bachelor of Education Programme (PISMP) at the Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia (IPGM), a path previously limited to SPM leavers. Additionally, 300 scholarships are available for outstanding STPM graduates to pursue education degrees at local universities. 'I hope STPM graduates will apply and look into this offer to further their studies in the field of education,' she said. The MPM will also allow students to retake or 'patch' selected STPM papers within the same academic year to improve results and university admission prospects, she added. Key initiatives Pilot programme at public universities A pilot Form Six programme has been launched at UKM and USM. Opportunity to pursue studies at IPGM From 2024, Form Six leavers are eligible to enrol in PISMP at IPGM. Scholarships for students 300 top-performing STPM students will receive scholarships to pursue education degrees. In partnership with Farm Fresh, selected B40 students will receive RM100 monthly until December this year. 'Patching' STPM results MPM will allow students to retake or 'patch' specific STPM subjects within the same academic year to improve results. BAP for students All Form Six students will receive RM150 in BAP, starting this year. Incentive for Form Six centres Starting this year, the ministry will award performance-based incentives to selected Form Six centres to recognise student, teacher and school commitment. Training for teachers The ministry and MPM will conduct targeted training programmes to enhance the quality of teaching and learning. Source: Education Ministry

Alam Haikal breaks through autism barrier to ace STPM

MACHANG: Born with autism, but blessed with a heart full of fire and determination, Alam Haikal Jansari Anuar is not one to be defined by labels. The 20-year-old student from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Machang has done what many thought impossible. He not only aced his Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination but also emerged as the school's top scorer with a perfect cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.0. Opting for business studies, Alam Haikal never saw autism as a hindrance and turned the challenge into fuel that powered his extraordinary focus in academics. 'I've never felt ashamed or less than others. I believe every weakness comes with its own strengths. What I achieved today is nothing but a blessing from Allah.' 'I'm not ashamed of being an autistic child because my mother is the inspiration of my life, and my teachers have been the guiding lights on my path,' he told reporters at SMK Machang today. According to Alam Haikal, who aspires to be an educator, his success was not solely the result of hard work, but also stemmed from spiritual discipline and exceptional perseverance. The third of six siblings, he dedicated six hours a day to revision, including a special study session from 3 am to 6 am while the world was still asleep. 'For every subject, I used different learning techniques. I know I'm not the same as others, so I created my own learning style according to my capabilities. 'I had initially targeted a CGPA of just 3.5. I never expected to get all As and be the top student at the school,' said Alam Haikal, who had previously achieved 5As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. Behind Alam Haikal's success stands a strong mother, Norlaila Ismail, 53, a resilient woman who has raised three children with disabilities alongside her ex-serviceman husband, never once giving up. 'Alam is the first in our family to achieve this level of academic success. I'm very grateful and pray that he continues to succeed,' she said.

Desire to uplift family drives Orang Asli student to STPM excellence

KUALA LUMPUR: The desire to improve her family's social standing became the driving force for Orang Asli student Roziana Tan Beng Hai to emerge as one of the top scorers in the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination. Roziana, a student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tanjung Gemok, Kuala Rompin, Pahang, said it was sheer hard work and discipline that led to her being named the 2024 STPM Best Student in the Orang Asli category by the Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC). 'My inspiration is to improve my family's social standing, and then elevate my social status... so that I can stand tall as a great Orang Asli,' she said. She said this after the 2024 STPM, Malaysian University English Test and Malay Language Proficiency Certificate for Foreign Nationals Outstanding Student Award Ceremony here today. The awards were presented by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. Roziana, who obtained 4As with a perfect cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.0, said her life, which is full of hardship - such as the lack of electricity and internet in her village and a daily school commute of nearly one hour - only strengthened her resolve to the point of being willing to stay in the school hostel for a year and a half to focus on the STPM preparation. Asked about her plans, Roziana said she had put Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) as her top pick to further her education in economics, which is her field of interest. 'I am keen on economics, so I plan to study in that field... UKM is my preferred choice because it is one of the best varsities in Malaysia,' she said. Meanwhile, for Nik Muhamad Ahnaf Rujhiee Raja Anuar, the 2024 STPM Best Student in the Special Needs (blind) category, revision and practice were the keys to his success, in addition to often asking teachers if there were things he did not understand. 'I always asked my teachers if I didn't understand anything. Over time, I managed to have a better grasp of the subjects and, alhamdulillah, it paid off today,' said Nik Muhamad Ahnaf, who obtained 4As with a CGPA of 4.0. Another top STPM student, Ahmad Hanif Roslan attributed his keen interest in history for propelling him to excel in the subject and be named the Best Student in the 2024 STPM History Subject. 'For me, history is an interesting subject. I never get bored reading about history, although others may feel otherwise. But I know that we can learn a lot from history,' he said. Earlier, MEC chairman Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff announced the 2024 STPM results, which recorded a national CGPA of 2.85, the highest ever recorded since the examination's inception. He added that a total of 1,266 candidates, or 3.06 per cent, achieved a CGPA of 4.00, an increase of 150 candidates compared to 2023.
