Co-ops confirm May milk prices

May milk prices have been confirmed by Dairygold, Kerry Dairy Ireland, Tirlán, and Carbery. The May quoted milk price has been reduced by 1cpl by the Dairygold board. This results in a milk price of 49cpl based on standard constituents of 3.3% protein and 3.6% butterfat, inclusive of Sustainability and Quality payments and VAT. This will result in an average May farm gate milk price of 53.4cpl based on the average May 2025 mil solids achieved by Dairygold milk suppliers. Based on EU standard constituents, of 3.4% protein and 4.2% butterfat, is 53.5cpl inclusive of VAT for the quoted milk price for May. A company spokesperson stated: "While dairy commodity prices remain relatively robust, the global supply and demand balance for certain products has weakened. Supply is projected to increase, and demand in some sectors is challenged, negatively impacting returns. "Additionally, geopolitical concerns and Trump tariffs pose significant challenges for buyers navigating an uncertain environment. The Dairygold Board continues to monitor markets closely and will review milk price on a monthly basis.' Kerry Dairy Kerry Dairy Ireland has announced a May milk price of 50.03cpl, including VAT, as well as quality and sustainability bonuses. At EU standard constituents 3.40% protein and 4.20% butterfat, the milk price is 54.66cpl including VAT. Based on average milk solids from Kerry Dairy Ireland suppliers, the milk price return, inclusive of VAT and bonuses, amounts to 52.75cpl. A spokesperson for Kerry said: 'Strong demand has supported relative market stability; however, rising commodity prices are beginning to filter through to retail, which may result in increased pressure on consumer demand.' Tirlán Tirlán has announced that they will reduce the base milk price by 1cpl from April's price and pay suppliers 49.08cpl, including VAT, for supplies at 3.3% protein and 3.6% butterfat. The base milk price in May for Tirlán suppliers will now be 48.58cpl (including VAT) with a 0.5cpl (including VAT) Sustainability Action payment added for qualifying suppliers. The base price and Sustainability Action Payment will be adjusted to reflect the actual constituents of milk delivered by suppliers. The actual average price paid by Tirlán for May milk supplies based on delivered constituents will be 53.62cpl (including VAT). Commenting on the May milk prices, Tirlán Chairperson John Murphy said: 'We have come through a very strong peak milk supply period, and milk volumes remain very good due to favourable weather conditions. "While dairy markets are generally stable, the price we have set today reflects the current returns. It is still shaping up to be a decent year on dairy farms.' Carbery Carbery has also reduced its May milk price by 1cpl. Assuming the decision is replicated across the four West Cork co-ops, Bandon, Barryroe, Drinagh, and Lisvard, this will result in an average milk price of 51.07cpl inclusive of VAT, the 0.5cpl SCC (Somatic Cell Count) bonus, and the FutureProof sustainability bonus, which as of this year is 1.25cpl. A spokesperson for Carbery added: "While dairy markets remain relatively stable, geopolitical developments are creating uncertainty for buyers, while demand has weakened somewhat with supply projected to increase.' Institute for Governance & Markets: Survey Reveals Growing Frustration Among Co-op Shareholders Over Glanbia Governance

Institute for Governance & Markets releases preliminary findings from member surveys and launches nationwide study. DUBLIN, June 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Institute for Governance & Markets ("IGM") today released highlights from its Spring 2025 field surveys examining member perceptions of governance, transparency, and accountability in Irish agricultural co-operatives. Drawing on responses gathered at the Annual General Meetings of Glanbia Plc and its majority shareholder Tirlán, the findings reveal a growing disconnect between co-operative principles and current governance practices. The surveys, conducted in person and via digital questionnaires at Glanbia Plc ("Glanbia") and Tirlán's annual meetings, capture the voices of farmer shareholders. A majority of respondents expressed doubts about the clarity of decision-making processes, the effectiveness of accountability mechanisms, and the alignment of leadership with member interests. Key Findings: 61% of members feel they have sufficient voice in major investment decisions. Over 70% of members surveyed expressed doubt about the effectiveness of current accountability mechanisms. 57% said their co-op should align more closely with institutional investors calling for governance reform. 65% of respondents indicated limited understanding of how investment decisions are made and evaluated. While the research focused on Glanbia and Tirlán as case studies, the findings point to broader challenges that may affect democratic participation and trust within member-owned enterprises. While many respondents support the principle of co-operative ownership, the findings underscore growing frustration with how that ownership is being managed, particularly in the context of Glanbia's recent performance and strategic direction. Next Steps: National Survey To validate and expand upon these initial findings, IGM is now launching a nationwide survey which can be found on IGM's website at: About IGM The Institute for Governance & Markets (IGM) is an independent research initiative focused on how ownership structures, governance frameworks, and market dynamics impact civic and economic outcomes. Founded by a group of European researchers, IGM examines how governance and issues of stakeholder influence across various sectors influence economic growth. ‘Farming for the Future' event to take place in Laois

A 'Farming for the Future' open farm walk, hosted by Tirlán, will be held in Laois on June 23. The farm walk will take place on Seamus Brennan's farm at Attanagh, Co Laois, from 11 am until lunchtime, with Tirlán encouraging farm families from across its catchment to attend. Tirlán's sustainability programme teams will be in attendance for panel discussions and presentations by experts from Teagasc, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Agriculture, Tillage Industry Ireland, Dairy Industry Ireland, and Meat Industry Ireland. Farming organisations are invited and encouraged to contribute to the practical, information-focused event. Presentations and a panel discussion will cover key areas such as farm economic performance and sustainability, protecting water quality with smart nutrient management, and how to avail of the Farming for Water EIP grant funding. Attendees will also hear how they can boost performance through milk solids. The whole sector approach to enhancing water quality also includes demonstrations throughout the event on fertiliser spreader calibration and managing catch crops. Tirlán chairperson John Murphy said: 'With a decision on Ireland's Nitrates Derogation now less than six months away, we're hosting this practical, information-focused event close to Ballyragget on the Laois/Kilkenny border to assist our farm families in continuing their work to enhance the environment on their farms. "This whole-of-sector approach is paramount and we want every farmer who attends to take home nuggets that they can implement on their own farm to protect water and help strengthen our case as we bid to retain the Nitrates Derogation.' Host farmer Seamus Brennan said: 'Even the smallest actions on-farm can have a very positive impact on the environment. I've made changes on my farm that have benefited both the environment and the economic sustainability of my family farm. I'm delighted to host the event and would like to encourage farmers to come along.' A similar flagship event in June of last year attracted large numbers and resonated with suppliers, speakers, and partner organisations involved in Tirlán's ongoing 'Farming for Water: River Slaney Project', which has now been extended across the co-operative's entire catchment. Mr Brennan's farm is located at Attanagh, near Ballyragget, close to the Kilkenny/Laois border, Eircode R32 NX26. Read More Demo farm reports 32% lower emissions with more profitable cattle

In 2024, Aware directly supported up to 40,000 people via its support and education services. The organisation offers services to include support and self care groups, a support line and support mail, along with a range of positive mental health programmes designed to empower people with the knowledge, skills and tools to manage their mental health and live well. The vibrant yellow-blooming Osteospermum or African Daisy plants are available now in all 15 Tirlán CountryLife branches for €7.50. 'Mental health is one of the most important issues facing Ireland today, whether you are living in a rural area, a town, or a city, and maintaining it must be a national priority. We're proud that our branches and our team of experienced horticulturalists can play their part in supporting the work of our charity partner Aware,' he said. Ann Meaney, chief marketing and customer experience officer at Tirlán, highlighted the important role of Tirlán's CountryLife branches and the expertise available to support gardeners of all levels. Commenting on the campaign launch, she said: 'Our CountryLife branches are serviced by experienced horticulturalists who are passionate about what they do. We invest in our branches to ensure our customers enjoy an excellent experience every time they visit. Gardening is not only a joy — it's a powerful way to support mental wellbeing.' Dr Susan Brannick, Aware's Clinical Director, spoke about the therapeutic benefits of gardening on overall mental wellbeing. 'Gardening can be a wonderful opportunity to practice mindfulness. It allows individuals to connect with nature, reduce stress, and nurture their overall mental health. We are excited to partner with Tirlán CountryLife in this meaningful campaign to highlight the importance of protecting your mental health, enjoying the outdoors, and raising funds for our vital services,' she said. The campaign is a seasonal one and will run for a short period of time in participating centres. Tirlán and Aware hope to sow the seeds for brighter days ahead, one plant at a time.

April milk prices confirmed by co-ops

The milk price for April has been confirmed by Dairygold, Carbery, Tirlán, and Lakeland Dairies. Dairygold has maintained the April quoted milk price at 50cpl, based on standard constituents of 3.3% protein and 3.6% butterfat, inclusive of sustainability and quality payments and VAT. This price equates to an average of 54.6cpl farm gate milk price based on the average solids achieved in April by milk suppliers. The quoted price for April was based on EU Standard constituents of 3.4% protein and 4.2% butterfat, and is 54.5cpl, inclusive of VAT. A spokesperson for Dairygold commented that 'global milk production continues to be relatively steady, but buyers remain cautious amid the threat of tariffs… Butter prices have maintained their strong price levels, although other dairy products have been less robust.' Carbery has maintained its milk price for the month of April. If this is carried across the four West Cork co-ops, Bandon, Barryroe, Drinagh, and Lisavaird, this will result in an average milk price of 52.12cpl, inclusive of VAT, 0.5cpl somatic cell count (SCC) bonus, and the FutureProof sustainability bonus. The base milk price adjustment for SCC and the FutureProof bonus figures are quoted excluding VAT. The total FutureProof bonus available in 2025 is 1.25cpl, an increase of 0.25cpl. Similarly to the Dairygold spokesperson regarding uncertainty of tariffs, Carbery have said "wider uncertainty around the outlook for global markets in the face of potential tariffs is somewhat impacting dairy market performance'. Tirlán will pay a total of 50.08cpl, including VAT, for April milk supplies at 3.6% butterfat and 3.3% protein. The April milk price consists of the base milk price of 49.58 cpl (including VAT), which is unchanged from March, and the sustainability action payment of 0.5 cpl (including VAT) to all qualifying suppliers. Both payments will be adjusted based on the actual constituents of milk delivered by farmers. The actual average price paid by Tirlán for April creamery milk, based on delivered constituents, will be 54.99 cpl (including VAT). Tirlán chairperson, John Murphy, said: 'While dairy markets are relatively stable, there has been a decline in returns for some individual products. We are pleased to be able to maintain farm gate milk price at over 50 cent per litre for the high-volume month of April. "The outcome of trade discussions over the coming period is likely to impact market direction. Consumer reaction to higher prices will also need to be closely watched.' Lakeland Dairies has also left the price of milk unchanged for milk supplied in April. The base price of 48.75cpl for constituents of 3.6% butterfat and 3.3% protein, a retention of last month's price. This price is inclusive of the 0.5cpl sustainability incentive payment. Lakeland Dairies has said that although there are geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding the economic performance of dairy, the supply-demand dynamic remains largely in balance, which is providing market stability.
