Senedd hears future generations law ‘lacks teeth'

The Senedd's equality committee took evidence as part of follow-up scrutiny a decade on from the Welsh parliament passing the Well-being of Future Generations Act in 2015. Labour's Mick Antoniw warned the Act, which aims to put sustainable development at the heart of decision making, lacks impetus and risks being a "bureaucratic tick-box exercise'. Mr Antoniw, who was involved in early stages of scrutiny of the then-bill, said: 'It started off… as a sustainability bill until no one could actually define what they meant by sustainability… came up with the term future generations and… that might be seen to be equally nebulous.' As well as describing the Act as vague, the former minister suggested Wales' future generations commissioner has few – if any – powers to hold public bodies to account. He said: 'I always thought that was a mistake right from the beginning, [you] don't give it proper teeth to actually have the impact that shifts decision making.' Calvin Jones, an environmental economist, said the commissioner and his predecessor told him their only 'big stick' is to 'name and shame' which they are reluctant to do. 'As soon as you get the stick out, people take their eyes off the carrot,' he said. 'There's this constant tension between wanting to chivvy the laggards along but realising once you get a reputation as somebody who's an auditor effectively then games start being played and boxes start being ticked. 'That tension has always stymied the way in which the commissioners have been prepared to name and shame which was, I think, the only serious bit of teeth in the Act.' Prof Jones, who left Cardiff University in May, suggested Audit Wales should have more of a role in holding public bodies to account in a similar way to their bookkeeping duties. He warned of a major lack of funding for the commissioner's office, describing the money allocated by the Welsh Government as akin to using a sticking plaster on the Titanic.

Jeff Bezos' wedding guest list included celebrities like Kardashians and Ivanka Trump

One of the most highly anticipated weddings of the year has kicked off. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is marrying journalist Lauren Sanchez in a star-studded wedding ceremony in Venice, Italy, on June 27. Leading up to the ceremony, protestors lined the streets of the Italian city in defiance of the billionaire's celebration. Protestors slammed the high-profile wedding for overrunning the tourist industry, creating a higher security presence, and more. Posters proclaiming, "No Space for Bezos" were held up, a play on his Blue Origin space venture. A fake dummy of Bezos was also floating in the Venice canal with money in its hands as it floated on taped together Amazon boxes. But one of the more shocking details to emerge is that Jeff and Lauren possibly got married weeks ago. Leonardo DiCaprio Will Attend Jeff Bezos Wedding With Vittoria Ceretti — Report

A new online report suggests that Leonardo DiCaprio and his girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti will be among the high-profile guests at Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's Venice wedding. Bezos and Sanchez have remained secretive about the exact date of their nuptials. However, online reports suggest that the event will take place on June 27, 2025. Moreover, crucial information about the event, such as the guest list, has largely been kept away from the public eye. So have Leonardo DiCaprio and Vittoria Ceretti been invited to Jeff Bezos' wedding? Here's what we have gathered on the subject. As per a new PEOPLE report, Leonardo DiCaprio and Vittoria Ceretti will be attending Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's wedding. The couple, who have been linked since August 2023, will be among the VIP guests present at the ceremony. Sanchez's ex-boyfriend Tony Gonzalez, their son Nikko, Kim Kardashian, Orlando Bloom, Oprah Winfrey, Kris Jenner, Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, and Karlie Kloss are other prominent personalities who have reportedly been invited to the event. Jenner and Kardashian were previously present at Sanchez's bachelorette party, alongside Katy Perry and Eva Longoria, according to the outlet. Recently, RadarOnline reported that DiCaprio was prepared to settle down with Ceretti. A source close to the actor claimed that the 50-year-old Hollywood icon was 'getting serious' with the 27-year-old model. They also noted that 'an engagement' was happening soon. 'He doesn't want to wind up an old bachelor, or be seen as a sleazy old womanizer, and that's where he's headed if he doesn't do something about it soon,' the source added. They also suggested that DiCaprio wanted to avoid comparisons to Hugh Hefner, the late Playboy founder. Ceretti addressed her relationship with the Academy Award winner earlier this year in a Vogue France interview. The model revealed that she and DiCaprio first crossed paths in Milan. She also disliked it when people referred to her as his girlfriend. 'As soon as you're in a relationship with someone more famous, you become 'so-and-so's girlfriend' or 'so-and-so's ex,'' Ceretti said. 'It's extremely annoying.' However, she was confident about her relationship with the Titanic legend, saying, 'If you know you love each other, then there's no reason to be alarmed.' She added that 'love protects and gives confidence.' Hollywood star Billy Zane is in Perth for Supanova

From playing the dastardly antagonist in Titanic to an unforgettable cameo in Zoolander, Billy Zane enjoys cult status in Hollywood, and has brought that star power to Perth this weekend for Supanova. Zane is one of the headliners of the annual celebration of all things pop culture, and told The West Australian the opportunity to share his many notable characters with West Aussie fans felt like 'a strange dream that has a Rip Van Winkle quality to it'. 'When you think of the Back to the Futures, Memphis Belle, Titanic and The Phantom, you just go, 'Wow', although, mind you, there's 100 turkeys that really are the shoulders that those movies stand upon,' he laughed. Impeccably dressed, the 59-year-old expounded on his disparate interests, from a decades-long career as an abstract expressionist artist, science and, of course, the film industry. The movie "Titanic", written and directed by James Cameron. Seen here from left, Billy Zane as Caledon 'Cal' Hockley and Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater. Credit: CBS Photo Archive / CBS via Getty Images Weirdly, despite all the attempted murdering, evidence planting and using a random kid to get on a lifeboat, the narrative around Cal has evolved over the years to the point some pundits question if Rose made the wrong choice by hooking up with Jack. 'From my point of view, I always try to find dimension for my most questionable of characters, to bring them beyond just being an entertaining obstacle for our protagonists to overcome,' Zane said. Arguably none of his characters are more memorably questionable than his first major big-screen role, the terrifyingly psychopathic Hughie, in the 1989 Phillip Noyce classic, Dead Calm. Billy Zane and Ben Stiller in Zoolander. Credit: Supplied 'I owe my entire career (to that production) ... it was so significant for me as a 21-year-old actor,' he admitted. 'Nicole was two years younger than me, but had a formidable capacity and grasp on her sense of self as a young woman and actress, and we were both punching above our weight and together really helped reinforce and support each other.' Support was also what Zane offered Derek Zoolander in a 'walk-off' against Owen Wilson's Hansel, when Zane played himself in Ben Stiller's iconic 2001 comedy. Those few minutes of screen time launched a thousand Zane memes, which the actor certainly didn't see coming. 'Never in a million years,' Zane said. Supanova runs today and tomorrow at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
