Liam Rudden's Must See Theatre this month
The calm before the storm that is the Edinburgh Festivals may leave Edinburgh stages bare but a London theatre break promises something special this month. As Edinburgh theatres fall into their usual pre-Fringe slumber this month, there's only one big touring production heading to town in July and that is Dear Evan Hansen at The Playhouse (1-5 July). The Olivier, Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical is packed with some of the biggest musical theatre songs of the last decade. All his life, Evan Hansen has felt invisible. But when a tragic event shocks the community and thrusts him into the centre of a rapidly evolving controversy, he is given the opportunity of a lifetime – the chance to be somebody else. With a score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the Oscar-winning composers for The Greatest Showman, book by Steven Levenson and direction by Adam Penford, the Artistic Director at Nottingham Playhouse, this brand-new production marks the first time the Broadway and West End phenomenon has toured the UK. It stars Scottish musical theatre star Ryan Kopel in the title role, with Sonny Monaghan appearing as Alternative Evan at matinee performances. With a dearth of shows in the Capital, you could do worse than planning a theatre break this month, and if that means a trip to London, get in early as there's still time to catch the final week of London Theatre Direct's Big Summer Theatre. Back in Edinburgh, there's a chance for little ones to get their introduction to theatre at The Playhouse when, for one day only, The Dinosaur That Pooped – A Rock Show (24 July) comes to the Greenside Place venue for two performances at 1.30pm and 4.30pm. When Danny and Dino's favourite rock band are playing their last ever concert, they go on a quest to get the last two tickets. But with a villainous band manager lurking, nothing goes to plan. Will the band perform? Will Danny rock out? Or will Dino's rumbling tummy save the day? Adapted from the No1 best-selling books by Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter, the whole family will have a poopy good time enjoying a brand, new story for the stage. Featuring new songs by the McFly favourites Fletcher and Pointer, a lot of laughs and a whole lot of poo. Running time 1 hour with no interval. Tickets here. Now if ever a venue was made to host a production of the work of Transporting author Irvine Welsh, it surely has to be the old Leith Town Hall Theatre, now better known as Leith Theatre, and that's exactly what the venue is set to do when it brings Porno (18 & 19 July), to 28 Ferry Road. Adapted by Davie Carswell from Welsh's novel of the same name, the stage production of Porno started life as 50 minute one-act play at The Pleasance as part of the 2022 Fringe, however, it's the full-length version that comes to Leith Theatre, one that has already sold out runs at the Liverpool Olympia, Crewe Lyceum, Manchester Waterside as well as a seven week season at the Art's Theatre in London's West End. Porno, the follow up novel to Trainspotting, reveals what has become of Renton, Sickboy, Spud and Begbie some 15 years on from their original exploits. It goes without saying, sure that swearing, drug use and language of a sexual nature are the order of the day, which makes the 13+ advisory seem quite liberal. Chaka Khan is headlining Pride in London 2025 – here's the full lineup
Now entering its 53rd year, next week Pride in London is set to put on yet another enormous and wonderfully camp extravaganza, commemorating the 1969 Stonewall riots and celebrating London's LGBTQ+ community. Besides the huge parade of around 30,000 folk, six stages will be popping up in central London on Saturday, July 5, hosting more than 100 performers – from drag queens and kings to DJs, dancers and activists. Most exciting of all, it's just been announced that there's one huge name headlining this year's event. Topping the bill for this year's London's Pride is none other than 'Ain't Nobody' singer and 10 time Grammy award-winner Chaka Khan. Khan will grace the main stage at Trafalgar Square next Saturday, joined by a host of other absolute icons. Also taking to that stage will be Titanique's Lauren Drew, Frankie Grande (yes, the brother of Ariana Grande) and Ru Paul's Drag Race UK star La Voix. And it might sound too good to be true, but all the stages are totally free to attend. Pamela Rabe tackles an iconic role + a kid's point of view on stage
It's one of those roles which great actors have on their to-do list: Winnie in the play Happy Days by Samuel Beckett. Winnie starts the play buried up to her waist in dirt. In Act 2 she's buried up to her neck! Acclaimed actor Pamela Rabe tell us what makes this such an iconic play and how she approached it as both co-director and star of Happy Days for the Sydney Theatre Company. In the play POV (Point of View), 11-year-old Bub directs a pair of adult actors on stage, to re-enact scenes from her life. There's a catch: it's the first time the actors have seen the script, and Bub is filming them for a documentary. This innovative work by collective re:group is all about how a kid experiences the mental illness of a parent. We chat to young actors Mabelle Rose and Edie Whitehead, who play Bub, and director Solomon Thomas. What if Celine Dion wasn't just the torch-bearing soundtrack to Titanic — but the main character? That's the premise of a hilarious musical parody called Titanique, which originated off Broadway and has since proven very popular here in Australia. A cast of 11 joins The Stage Show, led by powerhouse Marney McQueen.

Shucked review — this clever screwball musical is perfect escapism
★★★★★These are bleak times, but the good news is that you can escape it all by visiting three new or new-ish shows that all use gloriously funny meta humour. The Mischief Theatre team romp through every espionage joke under the sun in The Comedy About Spies, while the cast of Titanique mercilessly send up James Cameron's ocean-liner bombast. And now, at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, you can wallow in a screwball musical putting Grand Ole Opry pieties through the shredder. Shucked, which opened on Broadway two years ago, is the hilarious opening shot in Drew McOnie's inaugural season as artistic director. It delivers a diet of puns — clever, raunchy and sometimes knowingly cheap — as two lovers take a wrong

May 2025 events calendar for Chicago
Every night in our dreams, we've wished for this moment: Titanique the Musical is cruising into Chicago! The smash-hit comedy, in which "the music of Céline Dion makes sweet Canadian love with the film Titanic," is gearing up for a Chicago run as a co-production from Porchlight Music Theatre and Broadway in Chicago, with performances set for the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place this spring. Led by actress Clare Kennedy McLaughlin, who will play the French-Canadian pop diva herself, Chicago's Titanique will retell the fictionalized story of Titanic's sinking from James Cameron's 1997 Blockbuster, albeit using Dion's famous power ballads to push the plot forward. Featured tunes include 'Because You Loved Me,' 'All By Myself,' 'To Love You More,' 'Tell Him,' 'Beauty and the Beast" and two of Dion's most-loved covers, 'River Deep, Mountain High' and 'I Drove All Night," culminating, of course, in that radio juggernaut 'My Heart Will Go On.'
