Young voters want credibility, not nostalgia, Johari tells Umno members

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani today urged Umno delegates to shift their mindset and move away from clinging to past leadership glory, as the political landscape continues to evolve. According to Buletin TV3, the Umno vice-president said 40 per cent of voters in the next general election will be made up of young Malaysians, whose expectations and outlook differ from previous generations. 'These young people are not interested in narratives that divide Malaysia's multiracial society. Their friends come from diverse backgrounds. 'What they want is a leader who can navigate and shape a harmonious multiracial nation,' he said during his keynote address at the 2025 Titiwangsa Umno Division Delegates' Meeting today. Johari, who is also the Titiwangsa Umno division chief, said the party must remain inclusive and not marginalise non-Malay communities. He warned that failure to move beyond outdated thinking could result in a loss of trust among young voters. 'They're not interested in nostalgia. They want to see whether future leaders are transparent, open, and free of corruption. 'They are evaluating leaders based on integrity, credibility, and their knowledge to build a better future for their generation — and those to come. 'They're also looking for strong commitment from leaders — those who are willing to sacrifice time, effort and ideas for the nation without expecting rewards,' he reportedly said. Johari, who also serves as minister of plantation and commodities, said Umno delegates carry the responsibility of developing credible community leaders who can be seen as products of the party.

Umno cannot rely on legacy alone

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has called for a major shift in party strategy to better align with younger Malaysian voters. Speaking at the Titiwangsa Umno division delegates' meeting today, Johari acknowledged that while the party was historically instrumental in achieving independence and laying the nation's foundations, it can no longer rely on its legacy alone to secure support. "Younger generations today are educated, critical, and capable of evaluating leaders based on merit, integrity, and ideas — not sentiment or nostalgia," said Johari, who is the Titiwangsa Umno division chief. The Titiwangsa member of parliament said the younger demographic now constitutes over 40 per cent of the electorate, and their expectations of political leadership differ greatly from those of previous generations. "They are less interested in historical achievements and more concerned with issues such as transparency, integrity, environmental sustainability, and inclusive governance. "They don't want to hear about what we did 60 years ago. "They want to know what we're doing today and what we'll do tomorrow. "They want leaders who are transparent, who can articulate policy, who are not tainted by corruption, and who care about future generations, not just winning elections," said the plantation and commodities minister. He said that if the party fails to evolve, it risks continuing its electoral decline, as seen in the past general elections (from the 12th to the 14th general election), where support dwindled significantly. He also stressed that Umno leaders at all levels — from branch to national — must actively engage with young voters and understand their values, ideas, and aspirations.

Lata Kinjang waterfall lifeblood of Orang Asli

Lata Kinjang waterfall, one of the highest in Southeast Asia, is located about 18km from Tapah town. (Bernama pic) TAPAH : Cascading from a height of about 850m, Lata Kinjang waterfall – one of the highest waterfalls in Southeast Asia – is clearly visible when travelling along the north-south highway, beckoning road users to pause to take in its natural beauty before continuing their journey. Located about 18km from Tapah town, this multi-tier waterfall flows swiftly from the peak of the Titiwangsa range. Yet, it is more than just a scenic attraction – it holds deep significance for members of the Semai Orang Asli community, who have inhabited the area for nearly a century. According to Rani Ulin, the 'tok batin' or head of Kampung Orang Asli Lata Kinjang, the waterfall has been a lifeline for his community since their forefathers settled there in the 1930s. 'For four generations, many of our activities have centred around the waterfall. We gather forest produce, carry out farming and fishing activities, and make use of the various natural resources available around the falls. 'The waterfall remains the heart of our livelihood. As long as it continues to flow beautifully, so, too, will our spirit,' he said when met by Bernama recently. Rani Ulin. Rani explained that 'lata' means 'waterfall', while 'kinjang' refers to a type of deer. These symbolise the harmony of nature, which has remained well preserved in Lata Kinjang despite its relative proximity to Perak's capital, Ipoh. Now known as Taman Eko Rimba Lata Kinjang, the area has been under the management of the local Orang Asli community since February 2022 through Lata Kinjang Orang Asli Cooperative Bhd. The cooperative was established to improve the livelihoods of the indigenous community here. So far, it has provided jobs to 25 villagers. 'We're very happy to offer job opportunities to the youths here,' Rani said. 'They no longer need to migrate elsewhere to earn a living. Instead, they can serve and develop their own village. 'It's not just about providing employment; we've also become more confident in competing in the tourism sector. Tourism has become a major catalyst for our village economy.' Rani hopes tourists and other visitors will help protect Lata Kinjang's natural environment, which has remained well preserved despite its proximity to Ipoh. (Bernama pic) Rani, who is also the secretary of the cooperative, hopes his community will continue to receive support from relevant parties so that Lata Kinjang remains a natural treasure for future generations. 'We want the younger ones to feel proud of their ancestral land. As long as we can preserve the beauty and heritage of Lata Kinjang, there will always be opportunities for future generations to enjoy and benefit from it. 'We hope tourists and everyone who visits Lata Kinjang will help protect its natural environment. Development is important, but balance and sustainability are the keys to ensuring that Lata Kinjang continues to provide benefits in the future.'
