Sarawak holds potential as Malaysia, Asean energy hub, says PM Anwar

He said Sarawak could play a key role in the Asean Power Grid initiative with its rich energy resources, including hydropower, gas and hydrogen. "The Asean Power Grid will enable energy interconnections between member states "Sarawak's energy potential can be expanded to Sabah, Kalimantan and southern Philippines," he said at the state Gawai dinner here on Sunday (June 22) night. Anwar said he would bring up this matter in an informal meeting with Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto next Friday (June 27). "I have informed (Sarawak Premier Tan Sri) Abang Johari (Openg) that I will discuss an Asean Power Grid based in Sarawak for the benefit of both countries," he said. Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi were the guests of honour at the dinner. Also present were Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and federal and state dignitaries. The Prime Minister also said the good relations between the Federal and Sarawak governments formed a strong basis for resolving issues. In this respect, he said PETRONAS and state-owned Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) would move forward on the issue of gas distribution in the interests of both the nation and the state. "The oil and gas industry needs PETRONAS and Sarawak needs Petros. We need both to work together for Sarawak and the nation," he said. Earlier, Abang Johari said Sarawak was ready to contribute to the Asean Power Grid. "We hope the vision of the Asean Power Grid will be realised as a catalyst for economic growth in the region," he said.

Joy at Sarawak govt Gawai Day Open House
KUCHING: The sounds of the sape, a traditional musical instrument of the Orang Ulu community, as well as dance performances from various ethnic groups were among the highlights of the Gawai Dayak Day Open House organised by the Sarawak government today. Held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), the event, organised by Orang Ulu leaders, was attended by approximately 3,000 visitors from diverse racial backgrounds. The event, which started from 9 am to 2 pm, was graced by the guests of honour, Sarawak Governor Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi. The programme was also attended by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Dr Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Puan Sri Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. Also present were Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Ammar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Tian, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala and a line-up of state cabinet ministers. Earlier, the arrival of the guest of honour was accompanied by a parade and a performance of Ngentau Lan'e and Belian Suket by the Sarawak Kenyah National Association (PKKS), which is often sung by the Kenyah community to welcome guests. As the chairman of the Organising Committee, Gerawat, who is also an Orang Ulu of the Kelabit ethnic group, said this year's open house event provides an opportunity for the community to showcase their culture through clothing and performances to the visitors. 'As the main hosts and organisers, we are showcasing our culture to outsiders... not only the Orang Ulu but also other communities such as the Bidayuh and Iban,' he said. Unable to celebrate Gawai Day with her family due to work commitments, Suzanna Nyuak, 32, said the festive occasion was a platform for Sarawakians to celebrate the festival regardless of their race or religion. 'I was on duty as the receptionist for this event, and the warmth of the event was felt when people started coming in. 'For all Sarawakians, especially my family in Kapit, I hope this year's Gawai Day will give meaning to all of us,' said Suzana, who is from Kampung Nanga Ibau, Kapit.

KUCHING: Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, have extended Wesak greetings to Buddhists in Sarawak and Malaysia. The Head of State said Wesak Day is a significant celebration for Buddhists, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Siddhartha Gautama, the religion's founder. "It invites us to reflect on moral values such as love, moderation, tolerance, and sympathy towards fellow human beings regardless of race and religion. "I hope this Wesak Day will be celebrated meaningfully in an atmosphere of peace and mutual respect," he said on Monday (May 12) Wan Junaidi also expressed pride in the healthy spirit of unity and harmony among the various races and faiths in Sarawak. "Let us continue to preserve this harmony as the basis for the development and stability of our beloved state," he said.
