Zara Asante was competing at her first Island Games for Jersey [BBC] Jersey's Zara Asante has won triple jump gold at the 2025 Island Games. Vicky Hancock still has the long jump and 100m hurdles to compete in at Orkney 2025 [BBC] "I'm completely shocked," Hancock told BBC Radio Guernsey. "Triple isn't my first event and I got fourth in the last games, so I was thinking maybe the same again and I was aiming for personal bests, which I did. "I'm really happy." Asante's gold medal was the third won by Jersey on the opening day of competition in Orkney. Tom Atkinson won gold in the men's triathlon with his effort also helping the island's men secure team gold in the event.

Jersey's Tom Atkinson has won the first gold medal at the 2025 Island Games. Atkinson won the men's individual triathlon around Stromness Harbour in Orkney, finishing ahead of Gotland's silver-medallist Thomas Atkinson and Bobby Oag from Orkney who took bronze. Advertisement The triathlon was the first medal event at the 2025 games where more than 2,000 sports people will be competing from 24 islands. It was a first individual Island Games medal for 21-year-old Atkinson, who was fourth at the last Island Games in Guernsey. "I tried to push the swim hard and noticed there were some guys sat on my feet for the whole swim, so I pushed for the first couple of laps on the bike and took it from there," Atkinson told BBC Radio Jersey. "On the run I tried to set out a bit easy as it's quite a hilly course, but I think I paced it well."

South Shields bus cuts leave elderly 'isolated' and 'neglected'
Cuts to a bus service have left elderly and disabled residents "isolated" and "neglected", according to campaigners. Transport officials have been urged to reverse a decision to reduce services on the Stagecoach 12 route, which runs through parts of South people have been struggling to get to medical appointments or visit family due to the cuts, campaigners said. The bus firm said it was investigating options to increase the frequency of the service but the solution had to be "sustainable". In May, the service was cut from a half-hour service to an hourly service, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. South Tyneside Public Transport Users' Group said some people who used the bus lived on the highest point of South group's chair Nic Cook said: "We refuse to leave residents left isolated, their physical, emotional and mental health and wellbeing neglected. "Several residents stated that their families can no longer visit them because they cannot travel there reliably on public transport and cannot afford to pay for taxis to get there." 'Cannot cover cuts' Resident Tom Atkinson, 81, said he had been injured in a fall as he tried to walk up a hill while carrying his shopping after missing the said: "If you miss the 12, then there are five banks you have to walk up - it is a bit too much."Stagecoach said its current hourly service was provided at its "own commercial risk" without support from the North East Combined Authority (NECA) or said it hoped some of the money provided by the government to improve local bus routes could be used to fund the 12 service, which runs from the town centre through Laygate, Harton, and Cleadon official Helen Matthews said government funds were limited and it had to prioritise the money for areas which were at risk of having no bus services at all. She said: "The recent scale of cuts to commercial bus routes and frequencies is greater than our whole publicly funded provision can cover."Labour's North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said she felt for the residents of South Shields. "I remain very concerned the operator hasn't properly engaged with passengers - it isn't good enough and needs to change," she said. Follow BBC North East on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram.

Now, one of his brother Matt's close friends is running the Manchester Half Marathon in his memory, as well as to raise money. The Emmerdale star posted a photo of his younger brother, and wrote a heartbreaking caption. It read: 'Hi all. I haven't posted anything about this yet for the privacy of my family, but now I feel is the right time to do so. 'In October of last year, as I'm sure many of you will already know, my younger brother, Matt, tragically took his life. It's been the hardest time of mine and my family's lives, and we've really appreciated all the kindness we've received from those of you that knew him. 'Matt was a wonderful, kind, and incredibly funny person. Words cannot describe just how much he'll be missed by so many people. 'One of Matt's close friends @amackie99 is running the Manchester Half Marathon this weekend in memory of my brother, as well as to raise money for Empowerment Charity Lancashire. EastEnders win TV Bafta for the first time in six years after Emmerdale was forced to withdraw 'They're a charity based here in the northwest set up to support families and friends who've been affected by suicide, as well as providing emotional support for those who need it. They've been there for my family since we lost Matt, as they are for many others across the Lancashire area, offering support to families and to us when we needed it most.' Tom continued: 'If you can spare anything at all, please consider donating through the link in my bio. The money goes directly to helping other families like mine who are dealing with loss in the most awful of circumstances. 'I'd also like to kindly ask for your understanding and respect for our privacy during this time. While I'm sharing this to support a cause close to my heart, my family and I are still processing our grief, and we appreciate the space to do so in our own way. Your thoughtfulness means everything to us right now. 'If any of you ever feel low, know that it's okay to be so. And if you ever need to talk things through, Samaritans are always there to listen on 116 123.'
