The 23-year-old has struggled for game time since his January 2024 move to the Kassam Stadium from Cheltenham Town and spent the second half of last season on loan at Wigan, making eight appearances. Advertisement Goodwin made just three Championship appearances for Oxford last season and has scored one goal in 11 matches since joining the club. Meanwhile, the U's have extended the contract of captain Tom Flanagan. The 33-year-old defender joined the club last summer on a one-year deal and made 45 appearances in all competitions last season. "Tom [Flanagan] is really important to us," manager Danny Cowley told BBC Essex. "He's the captain of the group with a lot of experience and knows how to influence those around him to make them better. "Will is a boy we've been watching for a long time, and I remember seeing him play for Torquay, and thinking 'wow'." Advertisement Cowley said Goodwin had offers from some League One teams, but that "he's chosen to join what he thinks will be a top team in League Two." The U's boss has now made five additions to his squad ahead of the new League Two campaign.

Fraser Institute News Release: Ottawa has spent nearly $18 billion settling Indigenous 'specific claims' since 2015

CALGARY, AB, June 19, 2025 /CNW/ - Since 2015, the federal government has paid nearly $18 billion settling an increasing number of 'specific claims' by First Nations, including more than $7 billion last year alone, finds a new study released today by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think tank. "Specific claims are for past treaty breaches, and as such, their number should be finite. But instead of declining over time, the number of claims keeps growing as lucrative settlements are reached, which in turn prompts even more claims," said Tom Flanagan, Fraser Institute senior fellow, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Calgary and author of Specific Claims—an Out-of-Control Program. The study reveals details about "specific claims," which began in 1974 and are filed by First Nations who claim that Canadian governments—past or present—violated the Indian Act or historic treaty agreements, such as when governments purchased reserve land for railway lines or hydro projects. Most "specific claims" date back 100 years or more. Specific claims are contrasted with comprehensive claims, which arise from the absence of a treaty. Crucially, the number of specific claims and the value of the settlement paid out have increased dramatically since 2015. In 2015/16, 11 'specific claims' were filed with the federal government, and the total value of the settlements was $27 million (in 2024 dollars, to adjust for inflation). The number of claims increased virtually every year since so that by 2024/25, 69 'specific claims' were filed, and the value of the settlements in 2024/25 was $7.061 billion. All told, from 2015/16 to 2024/25, the value of all 'specific claims' settlements was $17.9 billion (inflation adjusted). "First Nations have had 50 years to study their history, looking for violations of treaty and legislation. That is more than enough time for the discovery of legitimate grievances," Flanagan said. "Ottawa should set a deadline for filing specific claims so that the government and First Nations leaders can focus instead on programs that would do more to improve the living standards and prosperity for both current and future Indigenous peoples." The Fraser Institute is an independent Canadian public policy research and educational organization with offices in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Halifax, and Montreal and ties to a global network of think-tanks in 87 countries. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for Canadians, their families and future generations by studying, measuring and broadly communicating the effects of government policies, entrepreneurship and choice on their well-being. Radisson Collection opens new hotel in Lyon, France

The Radisson Hotel Group has debuted its luxury-lifestyle Radisson Collection brand in France with Cour des Loges in Lyon. Situated in the UNESCO-listed Vieux Lyon district, the hotel's origin dates back to the 14th century. The renovation of Cour des Loges, led by heritage architecture company Cécile Rémond, Architecte du Patrimoine, has preserved historical structures and integrated rediscovered objects, encompassing a 17m-high glass roof in the central courtyard. The hotel, which became part of Radisson Hotel Group in 2022, now offers 61 individually designed rooms and suites. Radisson Hotel Group Northern & Western Europe managing director Tom Flanagan said: 'France has long been a strategic market for Radisson Hotel Group, and we are proud to introduce our Radisson Collection brand with such an extraordinary landmark. 'The opening of Cour des Loges Lyon, A Radisson Collection Hotel, is a fitting debut – bringing the brand's promise of exceptional, culturally rich hospitality to life. More than just a hotel, it is a destination where heritage, craftsmanship and curated experiences come together to define the essence of luxury-lifestyle travel.' Catering to various guest needs, Collection Superior rooms cater to short stays, while Junior Suites are made for extended visits. Collection Premium rooms at the property offer more space. Cour des Loges features an array of dining experiences including Les Loges, a fine dining restaurant, and Le Comptoir, a contemporary bistro. The spa at the hotel, Pure Altitude, is set to launch soon, featuring an indoor pool, hammam and sauna. For events, the hotel provides several unique settings, including the Jeu de Paume Salon, Petit Collège and Agapes, alongside five adaptable meeting rooms, the Great Court and two private courtyards. La Petite Loge, set to reopen its doors soon, will also offer a renovated space for private dinners. Cour des Loges Lyon general manager Yves Grardel said: 'Every corner whispers stories of craftsmanship, culture and cuisine – woven together through meaningful moments and heartfelt hospitality in the heart of Vieux-Lyon. 'Lyon's remarkable heritage, vibrant spirit and unrivalled art de vivre make it a destination like no other, and Cour des Loges Lyon, A Radisson Collection Hotel, is its soul – more than a hotel, it is a home steeped in history, where timeless elegance and modern comfort embrace.' Colchester United 'working really hard' to negotiate new deals for key players

COLCHESTER United boss Danny Cowley says they are working 'really hard' to tie six of their players down on new contracts – with all of them keen to stay at the club. Lyle Taylor, Mandela Egbo, Fiacre Kelleher, Tom Flanagan, Kane Vincent-Young and Frankie Terry will all see their existing deals expire at the U's, this summer. But Colchester are in discussions to keep them at the JobServe Community Stadium for the 2025-26 campaign, following the announcement of their retained list. READ MORE: Colchester United announce their retained list The U's have already extended the contracts of Ellis Iandolo, Owura Edwards and goalkeeper Tom Smith, after taking up options to keep them at the club for a further year. Cowley told "We are working really hard to negotiate new contracts for Tom, Lyle, Manny, Fiacre, Kane and Frankie. "I know all of the boys are keen to stay and we would love them to be with us next season and beyond. "It was great to be able to extend Ellis, Owura, Samson and Tom Smith's contracts. They have all played an important role in the team's success this season. "The boys will be the first to tell you that even though Tom Smith didn't actually step on the pitch in the league this season, he played a key role and has very much been the glue that has brought everyone together. (Image: MATT WILKINSON) "We are in such a stronger position this year in comparison with last season. We have a lot of our key players in contract and looking forward to the challenges to come.' Jamie McDonnell, Tyreece Simpson, Jack Tucker, Anthony Scully and Ken Aboh have all returned to their respective parent clubs, following their loan spells at Colchester. However, boss Cowley says he is hoping to lure 'one or two' back to the U's on a permanent basis. READ MORE: Tom Eastman signs for ambitious Isthmian League club Anthony Scully and Jack Tucker have this week been released by their parent clubs Portsmouth and MK Dons respectively, following the expiry of their contracts. Cowley added: "We also have to say goodbye to the loan players. Although we are hopeful that one or two may come back on a more permanent basis! "The biggest complement I can give them all is that from the moment they arrived, they always put the team before themselves! They have all made a brilliant contribution to both the group and the team. 'Nicky and I will be forever grateful to have worked with them and we are so excited to see their careers develop.'
